Cool pic from tonight.

Snow has been so deep I didn’t do anything with my wood duck boxes.  Looked at em Tuesday in the snowstorm and figured I was already cutting it too close.

I've been gone for a couple weeks. Where did all this dump come from on the right side and top of the page? Can I make it go away?

I can’t tell ya since I’m pretty much always accessing by phone.  But I do get a banner that drops down from the top at annoying times.  Probably the same style of advertising.

finally seen some kill deer and sand hill cranes today!!!  thought I saw a vulture too but way to far off...

No killdeer yet but I saw Sandhills dabbling the edge of a roadside pond between Zim and Princeton yesterday.

Today I watched 6 woodies (4 drakes and 2 hens) drop in at home.  Lots of ice and trees coming down the river while ducks are flying up.

Ice out on the backyard pond on Saturday and counted 3 pairs of woodies hanging around, including my deck railing.  Got the duck house up and stocked with fresh wood shavings.

Hopefully I can get another nest year.  My backyard out in the burbs has produced about 60 wood ducks in the past 3 years and probably fed the snapping turtle that lives out there too.

Sheez…. I wish I had a phone scope so I could grab a pic.  Watching 8 beautiful drake hooded mergansers courting 1 hen.  The rivalry is intense!  Crests at full display with heads being tossed back and forth and occasionally trying to run one another off.  All swimming back and forth in a super tight group.  Heckuva show.

And you didn't do that in your single years!!🥴🤣🤭

Saw these 2 in front of a local "artists" house on my coffee run this morning. Been complaining to the city for years about what is referred to as cultural expression after I was told to take down my archery targets on the 2 empty lots behind his house that I happen to own. Gotta contact mattell and get some new decoys.20220412_065507.thumb.jpg.59d0cf60dea701ecfdedb04a1a241d92.jpg

man you sure now birds!!   how many different ducks have you hunted.. I recall your trip out in the north west and the pics!!!

Kinda just the ones I can eat! 😄

I knew the number on ducks before but can’t recall now off the top of my head.  I think 43 species is the North American Waterfowl Slam.  I’m not really trying or thinking I’ll ever pursue that but I’m over halfway there.

Need to plan some more special trips to get much closer!  And takes 🤑.

Wife is bugging me to take my bird feeder down because of bird flu warnings about feeders on the news. What are you guys doing? I really don’t want to but it may be the responsible thing to do, just not sure How “responsible” I am.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
