i cant believe how the sandhill cranes came back...........there all over the place now!!!!!!!!

 

since the blue herons abondon the rookery between cold spring and rockville years ago, i see a few but not near as many!!!!!!!!?

Here are some pics I took last week of some of the birds on our deck feeders.   Male purple finch.   Red breasted nuthatch with the purple finch.   Male goldfinch.

Birds have been coming back to the feeders in the last week in abundance. And apparently an owl fed overnight on a little opossum and left me a present on the deck.

Smurfy, they might be English I’ll have to get my book out. I was never sure because they are a little bigger than purple finches. I put up some pictures way back on this thread but everybody kept saying female grosbeaks. If they are they’re all lesbians because I’ve yet to see a male?

the english have some orange and white on there heads!!!!!!!! and maybe a little yellow!!!!!

My book and the internet says English and House are the same thing. ——-The House Sparrow is perhaps the most adaptable and prolific bird species on the planet. Often called English Sparrow, its scientific name Passer domesticus is Latin for small, active bird belonging to the house. It is native to Europe and has spread to all corners of the world.Apr

i googled them too!!!!!!! not arguing but the dreaded house sparrow is one that will take over a bluebird house, whereas i havent seen the english sparrow do that. they definetly have different markings then the house sparrow as i learned to tell them apart!!!!!

 

anyway i prefer the smaller english sparrow with the different markings on there head!!!!!!! ?

Smurfy, NOPE! Over 1000 pictures yesterday and none of the ones I consider bigger than the purples. These are game camera pictures from a camera dangling from a piece of angle iron so not the best. Up here I am seeing red and white breasted nuthatches, chickadees, blue jays and grouse hanging around the feeder. Due to bears I have only one feeder going and only put a little bit of seed in it at time. I haven't put any suet out yet but I do see downeys, hairys and a pileated once and awhile.

I had a bear about a week and a half ago, I just slid open the window and talked to him and he walked away. I have a few Junko‘s, a ton of Blue Jays, still a couple zillion purple finches, and some of those brown things I’ve been trying to figure out for three years and still don’t know what they are. I know they’re not birds, but are you guys seeing any chipmunks? I had them all over the place. I even had one that would follow me around the yard on my riding lawnmower when I was cutting grass he was so tame. But I haven’t had a chipmunk around for probably 2 1/2 weeks.

went up to the cabin for deer camp thursday before opener, filled the feeders and by this past wed they where empty. 🙄 so filled them again. at this rate i might need a part time job to feed the birds up there!!!!!!🤔

Same thing I told my wife. Once I retire, these birds may just have to starve!  😆

      Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.

      If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.

      Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...

      Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?

      We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
