Pallansch
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is reminding anglers that unoccupied fish houses left on the ice this winter must be made out of materials that will allow the structure to float.Agency officials say fish houses that do not float must be removed if the angler leaves the ice.Fish houses also can't be placed closer than 50 feet to another house without consent of the occupant of the other fish house.Fish houses have to be removed all waters by midnight, March 15, of each year. They can be used after March 15 if they are removed daily. The Jamestown Sun. Meanwhile in North Dakota, hahahahahahahahahahahah!
PurpleFloyd
Nice. Looks like a new marketing opportunity for pontoon equipped fish houses. Maybe make them into a 4 season type rig.
DTro
reminds me of the law in some counties in WI in which ATV's must float.

Tom7227
How long does it have to float for?
hawkeye43
Any house that is spray foamed will float, I think its a great idea. More people will get even more stupid and try getting out on the ice sooner than before
Pallansch
Purple- that's kinda what I was thinking. I didn't really believe it at first till I found it in the regulations book. Funny stuff
Brad B
the regulation has been on the books in North Dakota for awhile. That is why Zack Shacks(their from Mandan, ND) advertises their houses float.

redtrucks
Basically it's a law to keep people from leaving old buses, campers, water tanks, etc on the ice unattended and falling through if the weather changed rapidly. Listening to a ND Game and Fish spokesman today on the radio this has been an issue in the past and understandably you wouldn't want the above mentioned at the bottom of a lake or reservoir. nofishfisherman
Does ND have a big problem with people just walking away from ice houses at the end of the season and letting them sink? If so why is it such a big issue there compared to other states (MN or WI)?
FirstIce
Who cares about floating fish houses! Did anyone notice 50 ft distance between houses . I want to see that enforced in MN.

Fishin Dood
how do you prove that your fish house will float? I'm sure the majority of fish houses will float... it's the length of time that becomes an issue. How do you enforce that?
mrklean
would be nice to see a 50 ft rule but i could see some heated exchange if you ask someone and they say no

Nick Kuhn
Most would float with just a couple plastic barrels of air on the roof. Didn't say how it had to float...
pikerliker
Who cares about floating fish houses! Did anyone notice 50 ft distance between houses . I want to see that enforced in MN. FirstIce I would LOVE this here!! I agree!
Kyhl
Who cares about floating fish houses! Did anyone notice 50 ft distance between houses . I want to see that enforced in MN. No kidding. I read fishouse blah blah blah 50 feet. Woohoo! We definately need that. Or maybe change it to 50 feet between permanent fish houses. Plus add 50 feet between a portable and an occupied permanent house or 20 feet between a portable and an unoccupied permanent. That way you could use a portable on a spot near another house when no one is home.
MuskieJunkie
I can see what they're trying to do with this but there are WAY TOO many loop holes here. How do you test that/enforce it. How long, at what angle....as someone else said bolt a bunch plastic barrels to the roof....come on
Desperado
IMHO there is a subtle, but significant, difference between "float" and "bob"Many shacks will bob; very few will TRULY float.
CJH
IMHO there is a subtle, but significant, difference between "float" and "bob"Many shacks will bob; very few will TRULY float. Splitting hairs. The point is to keep things off of the BOTTOM of the lake/resevoir.
Desperado
likely sothe difference is quite significant ONLY IF you happen to be inside the shack at the time
redtrucks
You can be on the ice with a fish house that doesn't float you just need to take it off the ice when it's not occupied. Not that big of deal.
Pallansch
True, I just thought the idea of making a fish house float was funny. I'm not sure even a fish house spray foamed would float, unless the floor was sprayed. Anyone willing to test it? I will volunteer my time to video tape it. Bahahaha
