The Great SUV Debate

Recommended Posts

For weeks I have been arguing that an SUV is a truck. I see the argument that truck is in the pickup catagory and an SUV is separate, but those who classify them as a car are completely wrong. Don't mix Crossovers with SUV, an MDX is not an SUV. What really gets me going is when someone who thinks an SUV is not a truck, calls an Explorer Sport-Trac a truck. The Sport-Trac, even though it has a bed, is an SUV. I think vehicles are classifed by overall catagories like car, truck, van, tractor, etc. A pickup, and SUV are both in the truck catagory. What some say is that SUV is next to truck, and is not actually in the catagory. What do you guys think?

Actually they are lt trucks. And don't forget about vans, whether mini or full size!

If an SUV can be a lt. Truck than a full size van would be a truck also? Or would it be crossover?

And where exactly do station wagons fit in? Are they suv's or cars?

If you don't care if the bloody gutted deer drips, and if you can't smell the gas vapors from a 5 gallon can for the mower, then it's a truck. If not it's a car wink

And yes, I think I am stoopider for even replying wink haha!

I feel my wifes SUV is more truck than SUV being it's an Excursion which is built on the F250/F350 platform. Sometimes I'll call it a van though...

Of course you can't buy a van that weighs in at 8,000 has factory lock out hubs, leather front to back, 44 gallon fuel tank, and runs on a diesel motor that gets 20 mpg!

My wifes thinks a lot of the small SUV's running around now look a lot like minivans. Guess it's easy to say when you're driving the biggest SUV ever made... Funny thing is she wants to get an X5 now as she's nervous the X has 235K miles on it.

Generally if 4wd (not AWD) is available, its a truck, that includes SUV's. Whether its enclosed or not is irrelevant to me.

You can get into frames/chassis and such, but generally the criteria above separates the truck chassis' from the car/crossover chassis as well.

Its all about the frame. Most SUVs are trucks in my mind, but not all. and crossovers are not trucks either. Subarus are cars and they also say something about your sexuality (if its a subaru wagon).

4WD cant be the determining factor because there are plenty of 2wd work trucks and duallies. and there are plenty of 4wd or AWD cars.

I said available - IE there are versions w/ 4WD. There are NO 4WD cars I am aware of, they are AWD.

SUV's aren't trucks, they are SUV's. Doesn't matter if they are cross-overs with unibody frames or Suburbans they are still SUV's not trucks. Can't put a load of gravel in them...can't tow a fifth-wheel with them...but you can go to the mall and grocery store when it's snowing with them...

if it gets used as a truck (work, loaded all the time, spends alot of time off road, lots of hauling, etc) it's a truck. if it's stuck on a paved highway all it's life its a car. and yes, that includes rams, silverados, and dually f-350s.

Sweet! My VW Jetta is a truck!

I use it as a work truck, It has work tools in it. Its always loaded with something and it spends lots of time hauling my tush around!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
