Got a nice one last night!

Recommended Posts

I got a good call from work yesterday saying that I didnt have to fly out until sunday instead of yesterday like originally planned, so I thought great I get a few more days to bowhunt. I packed up my stuff and headed up to my cousins land to try and get some meat from the freezer. I got set up in an awesome spot on a swamp bottom where 5 nice trail crossed within 30 yards of my stand so I thought for sure I was gonna get a crack at a doe. The first deer I saw was about a 120" 8 pointer that came into within about 5 yards that I decided to let go until next year. Im glad I did because about a minute later this one came in down one of the trails and I got him to stop in my only shooting lane for that trail. I thought I hit him a little low so I backed out until about 11 and then started looking. We picked up blood instantly and then he started to open up right away and he only made it about 75 yards before tipping over. Couldnt ask for an easier recovery! He dressed out at 180 pounds and green scored 164 gross. He will have quite a few deductions though with the split G-2s but other than that hes very symetrical and should still go over 145 for the final net score. My biggest deer so far with bow or rifle. Shortest bow season Ive ever had but I definitely cant complain!

Great buck buckhunter21! Congrats. Don't worry about that net score, I'd take a nice gross score buck with all kinds of character and "junk" any day over some symetrical buck that might score a little higher.

Hey buckhunter are you going to age that critter ? It would be a good one to guess the age, central MN I'd go 3 1/2 but likely a 4 1/2, either way he's a super cool one and I bet the final steps walking up to him were the time standing still moment!

Yea I want to get him ages for sure. I was guessing 3.5 judging by how long and skinny he was but then judging by the mass of his horns I would say he looks at least 4.5. He didnt have much wear on his teeth either which makes me think he was younger. He also had chips on both of his front hooves which Ive never seen before in a younger deer but who knows its tough to tell. Either way its definitely a hunt I will never forget.

Very nice deer, good for you! Not being critical, just a few picture suggestions so you've got some really nice pics to look at when you're older. Take a few pictures in the field, before you gut it. Wipe away the blood, make sure you stick the tongue back in (not an issue on this one), put your bow down in front of the animal. With a buck this nice it will help bring back great memories. Congratulations.

Great buck, So much for freezer meat wink The next time you go looking to shot a buck all you get are does. Go Figure.

As for the pictures, you get them when you can, now ever you can. Not everyone has a chance for all the perfect photos. After twenty plus years of hunting, I finally shot my buck, not a great photo but it's my deer.jimsbuck001.jpg
