That’s not good.  I remember back from the old deer feeding days it was said they transition to pine needles when they’ve run out of everything else.  No nutritional value; it just makes them feel full.  Basically the beginning of starvation. ☹️

Several years ago there was a ton of snow and the DNR was talking about how bad a winter it was gonna be for the deer.   It was also the only year the deer ate up some evergreen bushes around the house.  Chewed them up pretty good.  Took years for the bushes to recover.

What's making it a bad year for them?

Not sure if it’s the year you mean but the winter of 96/97 was really bad up in the Orr/Cook area. Snowmobiling the Arrowhead trail we came across deer yarding up on and near the trail. One place we estimated 150+ deer! They were everywhere and were not really inclined to move much as we approached.
That spring when we went up to ride wheelers we found probably a dozen or so wolf kills and a few that likely just starved and froze to death.

Finding a bad Deer yard that went wrong in the spring is a very sad and eerie sight, with just bones everywhere.  Something most folks that don't get out in the woods year around, will never see. ☹
