The Bible

Candiru, why would God set his judgment day if he was going to go around doing the judging now? confused

He knew people sinned then and he knows they sin now and he set a day to judge their deeds. That's the good and bad. Could he step in right now and call it "Game over" yes. But he is letting us all live the way we want good or bad in his eyes and will judge the deeds of sinners or slave owners alike on the day. I really don't think he agrees with one person owning another, but since he gave us all free rain to do what ever we want with our time during this test called life. He will make his Judgment on his time!

Slaves don't have free will.

I am told by christians that the bible is "god's perfect instruction manual". I don't know about others but if I was to come up with a moral code, "do not own another human being" would probably be in the top ten. It would certainly rank higher than most of the biblical 10 commandments.

How can it be a perfect instruction manual when there are so many denominations, branches, sects, and even religions that are all trying to sincerely follow it, but end up with all kinds of different beliefs?

Well it would be a pretty short Judgment day if we were all alike and all believed the same thing. Again, he gave us all freedom to live our lives the way we choose and since we are not all alike or believed the same things we all want to form the Bible's teaching into what we want them to be and how we want to live good or bad. I don't think one of us have it all right and will be judged for the mis-guided actions we have taken during our lives.

The Bible is an amazing book full of wisdom, sound teaching, and guidance for how to live a Christ-like life. I dont trust History channel with it so I havent watched it. Humans do tend to interpret the teachings of the Bible to fit their needs. So few of todays religions have any resemblance to following Jesus. Living a Christ-filled life is so simple and so encouraging and will change the way you look at everything. I am not there. But I am running the race.

I'm shocked at how people call the bible god's word, yet they don't put much thought into how the book was assembled. That is, the committee that cherry picked the books to be included.

There are writing about Jesus that do not portray him as such a nice guy. I like to think about why they are not in the bible.

Should be obvious. Nobody (God included) wants to print nasty stories about their kids.

Curious about how you go about sorting the wisdom from the craziness. Do you just decide for yourself or is there some sort of process?

I'll readily admit that jesus has a few gems, but even jc spouts alot of purely awful stuff. I'd like to think that any lord and savior of mankind would clearly articulate something as simple as slavery is evil, but he clearly does not do this.

Seems to me that most "believers" just latch on to what they agree with and somehow make excuses to disregard the rest. I could be wrong, if so, please enlighten me.

If you don't disregard a bunch of stuff you would be busy throwing rocks at people all day. So I'd say your assessment is dead on.

Do non-believers ever do any self-reflection and ask their selves. Why do I hang around on a thread that I do not believe in so much? Am I curious to learn something? Or is it just to pestor others that do believe in something? confused

Then ask yourself what kind person am I really and what do I believe in that I can't spend my time more positively somewhere else sharing what I believe in with others that believe the same thing that may help them? confused

Interesting point. In line with that thinking and in reference to the religious leaders in this country do they ever do any self reflection and ponder how Moses threw down the commandments in disgust when he found the followers worshiping the golden calf or whatever it was yet these modern leaders are all about money above all else. Do they reflect on the irony of knowing jesus threw the bankers and money changers out of the places of worship while the churches today do their best to bring them in? That Jesus told them to take care of the sick and the poor while the modern leaders call them the 47% that contribute nothing?Or that they tolerate clergy preying on the youth of their congregations?

I di understand God is letting them make their own choices, I just wonder how, in the face of that how the most influential ones are often living the most contrary to what the word tells them to.

Well they don't want gays to marry. I guess that is one of those super important cherry picked verses.

I'm just trying to figure out if people really believe or not. I told myself for YEARS that I believed, hoping that someday I actually would believe.

I do consider moving people away from religion an amicable cause. There is no good that has ever come from religion that was not attainable by purely secular means.

Um, please re-read 4 posts up and keep it to a review of the show! wink
