DTro
I know this is the deer forum, but most all wolf hunting then the first season will be deer hunters. So i thought it would be interesting to have a thread about who got tags and if anyone was able to actually shoot one. Also would be interesting to hear stories about those of you that didn't have a tag but did have a chance to shoot a wolf. Good luck to everyone next weekend!
leech~~
At the end of the hunt results we should try and some how tabulate how many Deer were saved a year that the amount of Wolves take would have eaten if they were still in the woods! We some how have to find the Avg Deer a Wolf eats a year X the amount of Wolves taken.
jay83196
I read an estimate of 14 deer a year per wolf, seems like a lot...anybody hear credible numbers ?
laker1
I read an estimate of 14 deer a year per wolf, seems like a lot...anybody hear credible numbers ? That's in the ball park(14-16) and a wolf pack of 5 covers about 40 miles square. So one pack=70 deer and 1.75 deer per square mile. Hunters are taking anywhere from 1 to 12 deer per square mile in wolf range, probably averaging 4-5 this last year. Some years like zone 172 hunters averaged around 14 deer per square mile(way to high) The cumulative of both hunters and wolf in certain years leads at least to short term decline. A lot of variables are involved-like winters etc.
NoWiser
I drew a tag and will be spending a week in the woods up in the NE part of the state trying to fill it. We have some nice bucks on the trail camera, but I would really like a wolf. We have seen several in the past few years from our deer stands, but I'm going to try to tip the odds in my favor by listening to the howling at night so I know where the packs are, and then trying to call them in come morning. According to the guys in Canada that I know who hunt them, they are territorial and coyote calls bring them in about as good as anything. It will be interesting, that is for sure! I'll be sure to post my results when I return.
NoWiser
Well, I just got home. It was an exciting hunt with a few close wolf encounters, but I finally got this guy on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. A 117 pound male. He came in after over 3 hours of listening to multiple wolves howling all around me. I used a combination of fawn in distress and coyote howl calls. It was a very cool experience! B-man715
That is freaking awesome Need some more details............. How far? What gun? Any deer too? My buddy and his uncle spent a weekend near Dairyland, WI to try and fill his tag. They saw some tracks and scat, but nothing in the flesh. Sinker
Wow! That wolf is huge. Congrats. Didn't apply for a tag here in WI. but I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at the harvest so far in MN. and Wi.

We some how have to find the Avg Deer a Wolf eats a year X the amount of Wolves taken. Studies vary greatly. Estimates range from 20 deer for a starving wolf to 75 deer for a healthy one. Average surveys that ive read seem to say around 30-40 a year

JBMasterAngler
I don't really know much about the register process for wolves, but if you did get one, would you be able to get a full mount done? Everything I've read suggests you only get the pelt back. Just wondering. As cool as a wolf fur would be, a full mount would be even better (and more expensive )
fishmounter
All you need for a full mount is a tanned hide soaked so its wet enough to stretch and go off hide measurments to order a form so the hide fits or close then alter the form. Kyle
Nice to see someone that actually "HUNTED" the wolf instead of just sitting in a deer stand while deer hunting. Makes it that much more special. NICE WORK! Thanks for posting about it too, not very many people showing us their wolves on here.
