Bowhunters seeing more or less deer from past years?

Recommended Posts

They are down here thats for sure, I haven't been in the tree like normal but my brothers have been out some and its either one or none or 10-15, so they seem to be in pockets, but hardly seen anything in person or on camera of bucks, few scrubs thats it.

For me it was a fairly big reduction last year and then another smaller reduction this year. But I was in intensive harvest now down to managed. There is still deer out there but rather than seeing 5-10 deer I usually only see one or two this year. I am seeing a lot of dry does, without fawns this year.

Down some, compared to 2005 way, way, way down, but deer were way way way up then, now is where a few brown down crews and a tough winter can really make a dent in what's left, but they always come back it's just like a grouse cycle sorta a bit. The tags come and go.

I'm seeing alot less deer. We had a bad storm this summer. Lots of blow downs. Also the farmer across the street didn't plant the field. Only seen a few does on 4 sittings. But when the rut starts to kick in they always seem to show up in this area. This happened before about 7 years ago. Seen 2 monster bucks that year. So hopefully history repeats its self and I can seal the deal.

In the past 3 weeks, I drove from the Cities to Walker and back (up during sunrise Sat, and back during sunrise on Sun)...and I saw ZERO. This past Friday I drove to Fargo from the Cities in the AM, and home midday Saturday...and saw ZERO! This is looking at every wood edge and empty field, darn near hurting my neck trying not to miss a spot!

I thought for sure with the temp drop this weekend we would ahve seen some. Nope!

Agree Phunnyfarm, seeing way way less each of the past 3 seasons, I can see why we're a 2 deer area and not 5 anymore. Also noticing it in the wintering herd numbers have been falling to where some swamps no longer have a wintering herd at all. We now have wolves we never used to have either, but the numbers are balanced so to speak. I'm not seeing much driving prime times either, maybe my last 3 road kills are decimating the herd lol, no they are taking a toll on the truck geez.

Like most, been seeing less deer. Blame it on the Oct lull and warm temps. But........Saturday night coming home there were a lot of deer out in the corn fields that have been combined. Even in the wind, they were out in the fields eating. Temps dropping and the corn starting to get combined should improve the hunting greatly.

From what I've been seeing over the past month or so, the deer count is definitely down from last year.

In your area perhaps. But by the look of my corn fields between Winona and LaCrescent, it's close to the same or higher than last year

I've noticed a downward progression in deer numbers in my hunting area's ever since I've started hunting 14 years ago. The feilds no longer have over one hundred deer on them at night, lucky to see a half a dozen. Most of the old runways in the woods used to be covered in tracks now I would say that most have not been used in 5 years and if they are being used might see tracks from one or two deer. I've been an archery, rifle, muzzleloader hunter most of the time that I've been of age to hunt. The past few years have averaged over 30 days in the deer stand. This year I have put in 12 days two of the sits have been at the same stand location the rest have been on different tract's of private and public land in 3 different county's and have seen one deer from the stand. I don't really know what to chalk it all up to. My guess is a few factors are comming into play. but all the less I've been down and out about the deer in my area for a while. frown

If you had that many deer at one time, I assume you were in one of the areas where they've been trying to cut the herd down. We're seeing as many or more than last year I would say. This is about the 3rd year after dropping from intensive harvest.

Hey Mntatonka! I'd love to hunt where you are...tell one of those farmers I'd love to take some doe off their farms...my freezer is E M P T Y ! of venison. Of course, I've seen some deer this year, haven't taken one yet, but the counts are going down down down...my area is hunter choice now and last year was buck only (unless you drew a doe permit)...7 years ago it was intensive harvest.

I guess hunters did their jobs...intensively.

Saw a wolf my first time out...so I think the wolves and coyotes are intensly hunting too.

Here's to better luck for all of us whom love to eat venison!

I would have to say that I have hardly seen a deer this fall. I am in Sherburne county. I am mainly seeing the same few does on the camera. I am also chalking it up to the high temps and high winds. I drove a short 3 mile loop tonight 30 deer. All does. The buck must still be sleeping. I saw a few scrapes showing up and saw some small saplings tore up yesterday. Signs of good action heating up. Now where the heck are the Toms is my real deliema. I see hens in a few places. It looks like the Toms and Bucks are off doing guy things right now.
