Drew a Moose License!!!!

Recommended Posts

Holy Carp, I finally drew one! I'll be hunting Zone 64 in the Boundary Waters!! Anyone else get lucky? I still can't believe it, and can't stop shaking. If anyone else has any experience with this zone and wants to share some information, I'd be forever in your debt!

That would be great, Muskie! I'm not at all familiar with the area, but from the looks of it Zone 64 is bordered on the west by Thomas, Alice on the southwest, Knife and Little Knife (the Canadian border) on the north, and Gillis and Crooked on the East. It looks like access can be had either from the Ely side or off of the Gunflint trail south of Sea Gull Lake, There may possibly be an entry from the south too, I'm not sure yet. Its time for me to start ordering maps. If this is, indeed, where you hunted, I would love to talk to you about it! I feel like there is a lot to do in the next 4 months. I think I'll start with a gym membership.

NoWiser,

If you have approximate Lat/Lon to bound your area, I'd be happy to provide one-meter satellite imagery in .pdf file(s). It's one-meter resolution, which is the best free data that I know of for that neck of the woods, but it's likely better than Google Earth.

I'd make them 2x3' or 3x5' so you can have them printed out if you want. (Fair warning, printing them can get pricey.)

Let me know either here, PM, or email. Also, I'm sure all of us are pretty excited to read about your trip, so please keep us posted. grin

My father in law killed his moose in the boundry waters 10 years ago or so. 42 inch spread, nice moose. After shooting it with his muzzle loader it ran out into the water and got stuck in waste deep water with it's legs mired down in the mud another couple of feet when it died. They ended up sawing off the legs to drag it to land with a canoe. I am sure it was quite an experience getting it out from the sound of the stories! Good luck!

Nowiser,

I looked at the map and we were in zone 20 just south of 64. If you are looking to talk to someone about the logistics of the trip as well as what we found to work well for us e-mail me at [email protected]. I am going out of town for a couple days so I will contact you after I get back if you send me an e-mail.

Matchset, I'd love to hear what you have to say about my zone. I'm undable to send you a PM, though. It says your box is full. I'm not familiar with the area at all, besides what I learned when researching which zone I wanted to apply for. The excitement has settled down a bit, and now I'm facing the daunting task of learning as much as I can about something I know nothing about, and being tested in less than 4 months. A little bit of pressure knowing its a once in a lifetime deal, too! I love it, though, and can't wait for the challenge. I already made it clear to family, friends, and the other member of my party that I'm disappearing into the woods the day before season, and not returning until I either shoot a moose, or the season ends.

My email is [email protected] I'd love to hear any advice that you, or anyone else has to offer!

I'll try to keep this thread updated as I'm taking scouting trips and planning my hunt, and then post my results after the hunt. This is going to be a great summer/fall!

Congrats!! We drew a liscense and filled it last year, but we were not hunting in the bwca. You will want to learn to call for sure, I called in ours. Amazing experience. There are a lot of videos on the internet of people calling. I made a birch bark call but it was a pain to carry in the bush, I used the tube from a roll of paper towels to call him in...

NoWiser, are you excited yet? I am! grin

I realized that email attachments probably won't work due to size, so I sent you an email from box.net to download the PDFs that I have for you so far. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Tom.
