FISHINGURU
ok this thread is for ideas on what moves the vikings should make in the offseason...re-signings, new coaching, trades, free agency, ect...it will change throughout the offseason as we make moves.IMO...the first move should be a new coach and staff...i feel the vikings were out coached all season and under achieved.shanahan would be leading canidate as of right now.expendable bigger name players for the offseason based on age, performance, and cost are. IMOpat williamsmckinniebirksharperkleinsasserleberofcourse that all depends on what we draft, trade, and sign with the money we would free up.as of right now the big name free agent players i hope we pursue are.albert haynesworthNnamdi asomughadiscuss
koonie
There will be some very good free agents this year but I don't think we'll have a whole lot of cap room to make a big splash like last year.
FISHINGURU
i hear ya koonie....if we can get rid of some of the over payed players or players on the down slope and fill them in with younger cheaper talent we can free up alot of money to make a splash...we probably won't make a splash like last season but we could possibly get in on a big name player and fill some holes.an example would be let sharper go and plug in tyrell johnson....i thought he played well as a rookie in the first half of the season and when we needed him to step in and play.sharper made to much money this season and didn't play very well imo...he's getting slow and his ball hawking that he's famous for isn't there anymore...he's been making bad angles on trying to tackle also.i'm sure his veteran leadership is nice but we can get better talent at that position for cheaper. koonie
Tampa Bay is $42 million under the salary cap! That's crazy. Vikes are at $18 million. Hope they spend it wisely.
FISHINGURU
well we made our big splash last season but weren't very smart on the coaching and QB situation....in all honesty our team isn't far away anymore....we play some mean football even when our coach tries to give away free points and games.our core group of young/ younger age talent is excellent.peterson, greenway, k dubbs, allen, ej, berrian, madieu, ect, with some possible up comers like robison, tyrell johnson, griffen, ect.i know people are disappointed right now over the loss but its about what you can expect coming from poor coaching and inconsistant QB play.the vikes are a good upcoming team that i think is gonna stick around in this playoff hunt every year for awhile now but we need to do some adjustments. koonie
I agree. If we keep drafting well and spend our money wisely if free agency we can be very good for a long time.

Scott M
The salary cap doesn't mean all that much. If I remember correctly, San Diego was the furthest under the cap and went to the AFC title game last year going into the offseason. They could have resigned Michael Turner or made numerous moves, but really didn't do much. Now Tampa is in a similar situation. 9-7, almost in the playoffs. It kind of stinks if a team was reasonably under the cap and then a leaguewide salary cap increase comes along, your advantage melts away.I'd like to see a new coach that tried to be innovative. Chilly is a Philly clone and while Andy Reid has had some success he has also killed his team in clock management. There are worse coaches out there than Chilly, but that's not saying much.Guru, I would agree with your cut list. I think they'll retain Leber and might get creative with Pat William's contract. They need to do something at QB to win in the here and now and they need to do something about their passing defense. Everybody loves the fact that the Vikings can stop the run but that isn't a crutch for a poor passing defense, there's no law that says you can't be good at both. The Ravens, Steelers, and Eagles proved that. I'd also like to see a big, strong, athletic receiver come in, but I guess everybody's looking for one of those. Rice has shown flashes, but he was inconsistent and hurt this year. Wade is a good slot guy, Berrian is the nice deep threat, now you need one more receiver that is somewhere above serviceable or satisfactory, some big play guy you can count on when you need to throw. We'll see how things work out into the off season. Vikings need a good draft and a solid year of making common sense moves.
FISHINGURU
yup it's official...this is the official vikes thread lolzigy is in a pinch right now....is he gonna stick with his head coach or is he gonna go with the fans? its no secret what a huge population of the state thinks about chilly....people are saying they are done with the vikes unless he's out of here.we play well because of our player talent not from our coaching..i personally haven't seen anything chilly has done to make me think a different coach couldn't of won us the division...i've seen more rookie mistakes by the guy then any coach...i knew how to play the clock since the first season i played in madden back in the early 90's lol....the play calling, the clock management, the urgency, 2 minute drill, ect, is pretty bad for this team and that falls back on the coaching.the qb situation falls back on coaching...tjack is chilly's guy we moved up in the draft to take him to be the future...so which is it? tjack can't play qb or chilly can't coach? they definatly can't get it done together.we need a new coach or a new qb or both....if we go into the season with childress as coach and tjack as the starting qb the fan base won't be very happy...zigy has some serious choices to make soon lol. harvey lee
We need a coaching staff. Poor coaching with many mistakes to numerous to mention. Today he states to not be concerned about punting the ball away. Our special team gives up more run backs that anyone. Now thats good advice. When its all said and done, Chili will be back for another season even if I don't care for him.
FISHINGURU
our special teams alone has lost us games...that falls back on coaching..sometimes guys just need to make a play but to have consistant bad special teams play there is a problem.the offensive play calling is bad...how bout we get someone thats a little more creative...i love smashmouth football and don't want that to change but lets mix it up a bit huh? where's the screens, the swing passes, the wildcat, get chester and peterson on the field at the same time...put them in motion...do something..it gets pretty bad when an average fan can start to know what play we are doing.i don't understand how all of a sudden we move the ball down the field doing all these different plays we don't see very often but all of a sudden never use them again and go back to what you've been doing for the past 17 weeks.coaches need to adjust as the game goes on...we never adjust but the other team always does....go out on a limb every now n again and do something. fishfarmeat
Fishiguru is not only a guru on fishing, but on football also. Your analysis makes alot of sense to me. Especially like the idea of getting AP & Chester on the field at one time. The one thing I would add is they would need to do it on a regular basis or the other teams would snuff those plays out for sure. Also, don't expect to see much changes with Chilly at the helm. The man is way to stubborn and it seems that the offense didn't go anywhere from where we left off from last year with a couple good games in between. Fishing_High
Losing Farwell for the season really hurt the special teams but thats no excuse for how bad that unit played all season.Do we all want Chilly gone? yes. But will Ziggy let him go? No, hes slowly improved over 3 years won a division this year and lost his first ever playoff game. I just dont see zygi firing him, if only Chilly didnt have good players to save his bad decisions and keep him in the game till the end.TJACK for as much as I wanted him to win yesterday he is just not the answer. Hopefully we make a move to bring in a proven guy Cassel is getting franchised so he will not be available maybe a Bulger or Anderson will get pursued.Hope for the best next year because its going to be the same Vikings. PierBridge
Quote:is he gonna stick with his head coach or is he gonna go with the fans? I would think he would stick with the head coach this time being he got burned last time by the fans when he/they made Chilli replace T-Jack with the worst starting QB in the NFL. Thus taking away 10 games of valuable experience from T-Jack and KILLING our chances in the playoffs.

fishin58
Yes, well maybe, that was a great D we faced yesterday. A few more starts would not have hurt T's confidence. They made ROMO look horrid last week. I am pretty sure Romo has a couple more weapons then T does at reciever.
CFRay
Anyone notice the TV shot of TJack positioning the baseball cap on top of his head during the second half? Did anyone who saw that think our team had a chance to drive down the field and win the game?TJack does not have what it takes. He's fine to hand off to AP or Chester but he's lost on pass plays. Gus is too old. I don't think Zyggy will let go of Brad yet. Brad had better find a capable NFL QB this off season or he'll be gone by Oct. 15 next year. He's a better QB then Gus as the numbers and results clearly showed. Would we have Won that playoff game with the 10 games T-Jacked was robbed of playing in by whining fans and an owner who never played a sport in his life?... Guess we'll never know will we.... pinkfloyd4ever
I agree on some of the FA's and soon to be former vikes. Don't think 42 will be back, and Birk is too expensive for us, unless he takes less $. My .02 here is that there is an offensive coordinator and a QB coach, so more to point fingers at then just TJ and Chili. Hope Ben Leber sticks around he's a stud. DHanson
I don't think we would have made the playoffs with T-Jack in there all season. He is not a winner! I don't care if he is more athletic than Gus, he does not win games. You need a quarterback who is smart and does not make stupid mistakes. T-Jack is a loser and always will be. Gus led us to make the playoffs= viking season in a nut shell.
we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Rick Posted January 5, 2009 we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Share Posted January 5, 2009 Actually an argument can easily be made that T-Jack led us into the play-offs.
icehole10
Lets face it. The vikes will go nowhere with Jackson at the helm. He should have been picked off at least two more times yesterday. He still throws the ball up for grab under pressure. If the vikes are going to go anywhere next year they had better persue a better qb. the clock management is horrable. I think I've screamed at the tv more this year than any other year. Chilli needs to go right along with tjack!!! way to conservative and predictable. Bring back Les Steckel (sp) lol
