most memorable meal

Recommended Posts

What is the most memorable meal you have had or a favorite dish? My most memorable meal I had was an elk tortellini in aspen co. ten years ago and I won't forget it. My favorite meal of the year is probably breakfast opening day of the MN firearms deer season. This is the time we get together and tell stories from the morning hunt, over coffee, scrambled eggs, and of corse, sausage gravy and biscuits.

Any meal with the guys on the fishing trips. Steak night is always special. Our breakfast taters are exceptional. Of course, the full blown meals that we have cooked on the ice are also at the top of the list. Great topic BTW. I feel sorry for those that don't eat well when they go on their excursions. I have been on those trips and when every meal is either brats or dogs, it loses something in the translation. Meal time is a great event, whether it is at home with the family or out in the woods/waters with the "fishing family".

I agree, good topic.

I would have to agree with the excursion type meals. Fishing opener is on my mind right now, so I would have to say the Friday evening meal before opener. We always do vension chops, shrimp, sausages (varies), and some kind of potato dish. It fills us up, and gives us the energy to hit it hard all night and morning long. The Saturday lunch/dinner of fresh fish that we caught the previous night/morning is also right up there. I might add a blue cheese coleslaw this year to the menu!

Good topic that's just smoldering. I'll start with the theme of the above posts.

Group of guys got together at a cabin on URL for a crappie fry. One of the group brought a crock of venison stew. Someone else figured out that the stew over the fryed fish was wonderful. Dirty crappie.

Locally(metro), Burgers on texas toast in Lydia, gouda fondue at Redstone, walleye taco at Bayside.

US, more service and atmosphere than the meal itself but ate at a converted old house in Jackson,WY. We ended up with a table in a room in the attic. Believe I had a lobster pasta dish.

I initially got hooked on burger with a fried egg in Sodak but have since seen a few in MN.

Outside US, jerk-bait chicken in Jamaica. Straight off the 55 gallon drum grill, hacked up with a machete and served with homemade bread. We have tried countless jerk-bait seasonings since and nothing even remotely close to the real deal.

2 from Costa Rica. We ate at a small restaurant in the NW(Aquasport I believe) while vacationing. Had mahi stuffed with other seafood that is the best piece of seafood I have ever tasted. Less than $40 for the wife and I with several drinks and the majority of the second 20 was tip.

Also had ranchos huevos at our hotels breakfast buffet. Not quite like what you see here with a little sauce dribbled on the eggs. I laddled out eggs that were floating in the buffet tray of sauce.

Best meal ever was with my millionare friend from grammer school in Las Vegas. He popped for a meal for 4 of us at KraftSteak and we had Kobe steak and Crab Legs at 2 bills each. We washed it down with some Hanger Vodka and a few bottles of $85 Cab wine.

Most memorable meal has to be each year when our family goes on our fishing trip to Cass Lake and we all go to the Pike Hole for burgers, waffle fries and ice cold beer. We usually have about 25 people and have four generations of family, our parents, our kids and our grand kids. We take a few boats across the lake, dump about $5 into the juke box and have a good time for a few hours.

Funny thing, the difference in price for the "best" meal and the most memorable....Priceless!

The most memorable meal has to be when my five kids were still young and we lived from paycheck to paycheck. I was making breakfast for them and I chopped some ham into the fry pan and fried it up. Then, I broke a dozen eggs into a bowl for scrambled eggs. I like to blend them with a bit of milk, so I poured from the little kids' milk pitcher into the eggs. BUT someone had put grape juice in the milk pitcher(a small ,brown Rubbermaid pitcher). When whipped together, eggs and grape juice turn green. I wasn't going to waste them so I served my kids GREEN EGGS AND HAM. It became one of their childhood favorites.

The most memorable? The one I remember most was when we had a party at our house and us guys thought the women could handle grilling all the chicken so we could sit back and drink beer and talk smart. You cant mess up chicken right?

The reason this is the most memorable meal is becasue now I "remember" to not let the ladies come within 5 feet of the grill at any time. That was the biggest pile of undercooked chicken I have ever witnessed. Nothing like getting all ready to dig into this great meal and take that first bite of raw chicken. Yuk!

A friend near Seattle had a fresh seafood spread, all caught by himself. Dungenous (sp?) crab, sockeye salmon and jumbo prawns on the grill. Man, that was great!

Bust,

Just keep chuckin and duckin and you will make it. I had many a meal of Kraft Mac and Cheese and hot dogs when the budget was thin. Once you get past that stage you look back and laugh but it can be tough when you are in the middle of it. Just keep pluggin and keep the family strong! The stronger the breeze the tougher the trees!

One of my most memorable meals was in Colorado, eating elk steaks from the elk I'd shot that day, fried in butter over a wood fire. This was after eating MRE's for three days. We'd eat up a pan full, stand around for awhile, then cook up some more. It was great!!!

The most memorable and favorite meal were both for me.

I booked a room downtown for my wife and I for Valentine’s day several years ago. The plan was that we would just find a nice place and have dinner.

Silly me thinking that…… good luck on Valentines Day.

Well as we were walking around looking for a place to eat, we came upon Goodfellows and asked if they had a table, they checked and they just had a cancelation.

Basically there was no menu for the night, special Valentines day dinner.

We of course had to order the wine flight to go with the 6 course meal. wink

I think when I started to wonder how much it was going to cost is when I started noticing local celebrities all over the place.

The Pheasant/Caviar dish will probably never be outdone. Simply amazing. My wife asked for a bit more Caviar and the server kind of chuckled and said “we can’t really do that since it was just flown in and there is a finite amount”

Well after about 5-6 glasses of wine from exotic years and places, the time finally came and the server walked the bill over.

I opened it, calmly closed it…….handed to my wife. She opened it, calmly closed it. We looked at each other and in unison we burst out laughing hysterically (I think we drew a little attention with that).

$385 + 15% TIP

Never forget that one. grin

There are so many that are outdoors related but 1 tops my list.

Back in the '80's I was in a youth group with my buddies. We were camping on lake Vermillion and we portaged into Trout lake with the resort owner/guide. We met up for a shore lunch of fresh walleyes , fried potatoes, and beans over a campfire. To this day I don't know if it was so good because we were camping or if it was it really that good?

Other Ferny family favorites:

Fresh venison tenderloin medalions dipped in milk, flour, fried in real butter, and sprinkled with Canadian Steak seasoning.

Fresh Morels sautéed in butter on top of marinated grilled steaks.

"The Beast Feast" Only wild game gathered by friends cooked to perfection by the everyone. Salmon, venison, pheasant, grouse, halibut...with several wines and beers. Re-living all the stories like they just happened.

You couldn't buy a better meal or evening!!!

Ferny.

last weeks microwaveable chicken pot pie was awesome.

No, ha ha. I remember My great aunt's huge roaster pan full of fried chicken, best I ever had. She cooked it every summer when we went to visit. Beans, potatoe salad, and rhubarb pie.

Deer camp, every year before the opener. Backstraps wrapped in bacon, pheasant wrapped in bacon and water chestnuts along with 4-6 other items.

One of the guys brings down 20 birds and I supply the backstraps. We have approx 20 people eating with the wives.

A story to match DTro's. On our 30th anniversary, we went to a very nice place and the meal ran $195.00. The whole meal was awesome. Boy Dtro, yours must have been real special for another hondo plus.
