Favorite Big Bass Lure.

Well we have had the topic of favorite tough bite lures. Now how about your favorite big bass lure.

Mine would have to be large spiinerbaits (1/2, 5/8, even 3/4 ounce) for and aggressive presentation or for a slower presentation I like a bass jig.

Curious to what everybody else uses to get their "big bite"

1/2 oz Pumpkin Jig Pig... is what I tie on when looking for a big fish..

That said, I have caught more 6 lb fish on a drop shot in the last 3 years than any other lure.. But then again.. wink wink... Its probably the lure I have in the water more often than not!. .LOL

Hiya -

For largemouths, a 3/8 or 5/8 oz Jungle Jig in either black or black/blue, with a Power Craw or Riverside Big Claw trailer.

For smallies, a 5" smoke/black pepper grub, or a 3" Green Pumpkin Yum Dinger on a drop-shot.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

If I was looking for bigger fish bites (when wouldn't I be?), I would be tossing a 1/2 oz. black/blue jig with a Zoom SuperChunk or some similar trailer.

But, you know. It really depends on the situation. Every bait is a big bass bait. It's all about presenting the bait where they live, and giving them incentive to eat it.

I've always been a fan of frogs over cover, i love it when tthe big ones come up and drill them on the top. But my favorite lure(s) it's a tie, for lunkers either the slurpies, swim shad, shiner, worms, etc they all work, or a jig and pig usually works well.

1. Jig

2. Large Texas rigged lizard

3. Large topwater

All fished as slow as you can stand it.

I fished two straight years for one over 7 but never cracked it. 10 over 6 though and lots of 5's.

In the same spots at the same time, live bait (huge shiners, crawlers, and even waterdogs) caught only the little ones.

I would have to say either a 3/8oz black/purp./blue jig or a spro bronzeye frog in either black or yellow depending on the lake.

Side note: This past year I kept track of all the fish I caught and what I caught them on. I also did this specifically for fish over 18". The jig clearly led the way with 34 fish over 18" followed by the dropshot (I agree Deitz!) with 7 and the frog with 5.

I also have a fishing log with different things recorded in it. It is real interesting to look at once in a while, and good for comparisons.

Using the 18" plus st. croixfishin used, for largemouth I caught 6 with frog style lures, 5 dropshotting about a 4 or 5" straight tail worm, 2 on a 1/2 oz skirted Jig and craw, 1 on a deep crankbait, and 2 on my fly rod with a blockhead popper from the Fly Angler, and I my biggest smallmouth of the year which was 18" on the same blockhead popper too.

Like others have mentioned I agree it isn't so much a certain lure style or size, but where and how you are fishing the lure. Cause my 3 biggest bass were caught on a 5" straight tail worm, and a popper on my fly rod.

I guess I find fishing with spinner baits and rubber lure (except for rubber frogs) boring.

Last year I had great luck with a large Decker Top Water Bait...patented in 1908. It was a beat-up lure...but I caught 4 fish over 5 pounds on it last year! And I didn't even use it that much. No other lure I used caught bass that big last year....

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
