How fast can your little fishing boat go?

Fishin4Life

Question

Just curious. I have a little 14ft standard fishing boat with the bench seats. It has an 18hp motor. The other day with minimal gear I got it up to 25mph as per gps. I know there are a lot of guys out there with little boats like mine, just curious to see what all your little boats can do with what power motors...

16' Bass Tracker (do I still count as little?) with a 20hp Merc.......I can just reach 18 mph going down the backside of a wave(with two guys and gear)!!! LOL grin.gif

Who's got a 40hp for me?

There are great advantages with small boats. SO easy to put in and take out alone... mine is ideal for one person (and a couple of kids under 7)... The 5 gallon tank lasts like 5 long days... must get me 50 miles!.. the electric trolling motor really pushes me along fast.. I can get through waters no other boats can (shallows).. the only reason I'll buy a larger boat is to hold the kids when they get too big (and it would be nice to stand more often!)

was out last night with my buddy on Bald eagle in his 14 footer with an 18 horse on the back. Never got over 9 MPH .

We were pushing a lot of weight, namely me in the front of the boat (275#'s) but he redid his boat about 3 years ago and replaced the floor with 1/2 inch pressure treated. Prior to that I had it going 22 mph (gps) speed on superior (alone), we went 19 mph with three guys and stuff (cooler o' beer) heading out on to superior.

My current boat is a 16 foot crestliner with a 40 on the back along with a 9.9 kicker, I can go about 23 mph now that I have added two batteries up front for the troller. Keep those boats light and look out for us slow moving trawlers...

16' ancient(Very deep and wide) Alumacraft with 25 hp Evinrude..

usually full of overweight catfishermen and a 100# minnow tank.. mid teens with 3 fat(including me) people in the boat and the oversize bait tank. I will guess low 20's by myself(very rare solo).

Its not fast but I dont have to worry about getting swamped, or have anyone fall out of the boat!

Myself alone in 94 alumacraft lunker v16 and 25hp johnson, measured 26mph with me[180lbs] only on a calm day.

My old man retired down to Arkansas and pick up this new boat for the rivers down there. It is basically like a canoe with a seat in the middle with stick steering, a 25 horse, made of fiberglass. I think the boat itself weighs about 150lbs. I didn't measure the speed, but the builder claims it will go about 40mph and it felt pretty close to that for me.

1978 14' Crestliner and a '57 Johnson 10hp. How fast does it go? Dunno, how fast can you walk?

I got the same motor (best motor I have ever had) on a 1961 14' plazacraft. Don't know how fast either, but frequently get passed by birds and old ladies with walkers grin.gif

You can say that again. I also have a 16' fiberglass duckboat (120 lbs) with a 15 horse 4 stroke yamaha on it. Now that is scary, almost keeps up with my parents 90 horse.

It's not about how fast you get there, It's about getting there in style wink.gif

16' Bass tracker Guide V-16 w/ 25 horse Merc. Not sure how fast, but with two big guys in the back we have to rock foreward a little to get her to plane smirk.gif. To her credit though, the back-seat-mounted live-well always has a little water in it and the decking and storage lockers on this boat is heavy...but nice to have. On plane, maybe 18-20 mph w/ just me in it. The perfect boat for Metro lakes! A little scary on Mille Lacs though. ooo.gif

Was in alabama on a buisness trip and I met a guy shore fishing on a creek that entered the tennesse river who took me out on his boat a few days later. Talk about a death trap!!! he had a 14ft aluminum flat bottom bass boat with an 85 hp mariner on it. I did not have my GPS but we were out-running all of those $60K tournament bass boats. That was at 3/4 throtle (sp?) Very dangerous though, the boat was coast guard approved for a 25 hp. The boat sat at about a 10 degree angle when stopped because the motor weighed down the back so much. Needless to say I had my life vest on!!!!!
