catman71
I caught a large snapping turtle once, got the hook out with a LONG forecepts. Next cast, bobber goes down again, another snapping turtle. 2 in a row. Got that hook out to but it wasn't real fun.
Howieroch
I caught a three pound rock while walleye fishing one time. The odd shape of the rock actually made it fight pretty good. I still get a hard time about that. On a lake I fish a lot over in Wisconsin we hook the same extension cord at least once a year. I tried pulling it in the boat one time, but after about 200 feet of cord and no end in sight I gave up and threw it back into the lake. I have seen other boats hook the cord also - everyone gives up trying to get it all in and just throws it back into the lake. After 6 or 7 years I am wondering if it is a local's idea of a prank on all the people who fish that bay.On a fly in in Canada I was fishing off the dock and tied into something huge. I fought it for about 15 minutes and ended up with a 5 gallon pail full of lake mud and fish guts - my jig was stuck just perfect in the handle. On the next cast I again tied into something BIG. After another long fight I landed a 30 gallon black garbage bag full of mud, fish guts, and a shoe. My brother, CornPirateKiller, had to leave the dock because he was laughing too hard to fish. Anylakeanytime
When I was a kid, I was fishing at turtle river lake for notherns off the dock with a bobber and I watched a nice mallard dive bomb my minnow and sink my bobber, it took off flying and snapped my line. Have had a few more attempt it since then, but managed to real in before they got it.
JohnMickish
While fishing lake Sacacawia(sp?) in North Dakota I once snagged a flat piece of coal. This thing would shimmy when reeling in so I thought I had a nice Walleye. Nope, just a dumb piece of coal.
Mn Walleye 1976
Have a friend that was fishing up on Mille Lacs one winter. He had his line setting there with a minnow on and the bobber went down. Sets the hook with some decent weight on it.Gets the fish in but it was only an 8-10 inch eelpout. The minnow had swan through a rock with a hole in it. Duffman
Broke out the net for weber grill once. Just the circular grill part, fishing the Miss while trolling below the Ford Dam. With the current involved, it put up quite the fight. My buddy hooked it in the middle, and everytime he got it close to the boat, the hook would slide to the other side and the GrillFish would make another run. After three or four runs we finally got a look at it and had a good laugh.
FOOT
Practical Joke Time.I am always teased about the way I set the hook on a walleye. In fact my friends claim the walleye got it's name from me setting the hook soooo hard it crossed their eyes. And now the eyes of the walleye have genetically mutated. That being said. We were fishing Mille Lacs one winter out of a couple rented sleeper shaks. Two of my partners went for a tour and discovered a filleted out 6 lb walleye carcuss. They brought it back and when I fell asleep they hooked it to my line. We had lights and buzzers hooked to the line so when they lowered the carcuss it set off the alarm. I jumped up and watched as my line was spooling out. I waited until it stopped, felt the heft of a nice fish and set the hook.As I pulled the carcuss thru the ice it was met with a bunch of laughter and cat calls from my partners. They claimed I set the hook sooo hard it actually pulled the skin right off the walleye. We would always play the joke on the same guy each year ice fishing the Mississippi by Maiden Rock. We would attach a beer bottle filled with lake water (we weren't stupid) to his line and let it down the hole. Of course when he went to jig his line he would feel the weight and set the hook and bring up a nice bottle bass. We played this on him 8 years in a row. The only reason we stopped was because he got so mad he said one more time and he'd never come with us again. He was good for a lot of other good practical jokes so that one faded into history. CatManLee
A couple years back I was fishing the Red in Grand Forks just downstrem from the bridge and caught something heavy with the anchor. It's not unusuall to catch trees and such with the anchor, this turned out to be a ladies mountain bike! Somehow this doesn't suprise me much. Earlier this spring I was fishing after dark, when my bottom rig took off. The fish (or so I thought) pulled some line out and then felt like it just layed on the bottom out in the river. I thought I had a big catfish on, because it would move or headshake once in a while, otherwise it would just lay there. After about 15 minutes of getting nowhere with it, my buddy noticed the line was close to shore. He followed the line down and it was caught on a big clump of cattails in an eddy near shore! We got the hook out and I felt really dumb.
Dave1
When I was a kid we used to fish on Rice Creek right on hyw 65 in Fridley. There was a little pond off one side of the creek where we would sit on the bank, soak our feet and fish. We had a stringer with a couple bullheads on it, staked to the bank with a stick. We noticed the stinger jumping around so we pulled it up. There was a snapping turtle hanging onto one of our bullheads that must have been 10 or 15 lbs. It dropped off and disappeared under the roots of a large tree on the bank. We never soaked our feet there again.
Swimmer
Awesome stories today guys! I especially empathize with the ones that snag an object that due to current or hydrodynamic shape of object seem to actually fight like crazy.
Outdoors_guy
Well this didn't happen to me but I witnessed the whole thing. I was fishing in the Gull Lake ice fishing contest a couple of years ago. We were fishing in 56 FOW and about 5 minutes into the contest, the guy next to me hooked into something really big. He was jigging with a Buckshot and we watched is line move all over in the hole so we thought it was a fish. Then after awhile it was like this can't be a fish then it would start to do something different and then we were like it is a fish. Well when it got close enough to see the guy hooked into a nice lawn chair. It was pretty funny. 16,000 holes drilled and he picks the one with a lawn chair. He was pretty ticked off. Thought i would share the story.
Bobby Bass
I have another unusual catch but not really a catch several years ago I was fishing on Carabou Lake and I had several rods on board with some of the lures hanging on the edge of the bow. A section of docks has a very friendly choc lab that would run from dock to dock as I fished keeping track of me. I was not paying attention when the mutt jumped from the dock and was swimming out to me just as I was trying to land a fish. Well I am reaching for the fish as the lab bites down on a devilhorse hanging over the edge of the boat. I drop the bass and try to grab the dog but he is swimming away with the lure in his mouth. I manage to open the bail and clip the line. The dog makes it to shore and takes off running towards home. I pull up to the dock toss a rope and set off in hot pursuit. I am guessing the owner lives about four cabins down so I go there and bang on his door. He comes to the door and I tell him the story that his dog is running around with three hooks in his mouth. Being an owner of three dogs I am already thinking how are we going to catch him and get him to a vet. When around the corner comes the lab with no lure in his mouth. Big sigh from all three of us. Spent several more minutes talking to the owner of the dock that I left my boat at as to why I just tied my boat up. Owner of the dog came over and cleared that problem up. So keep an eye out for friendly dock jumping dogs...O and the bass was still on my rod, the handle got wedged next to the console so I didn't lose the rod when I dropped it. Tyler Holm
I caught a perfectly round tennis ball once. I was jig fishing the bottom. Out ice fishing Waubay (2nd day of fishable ice) and bobber goes down. Reeled it up and i had caugth a piece of mono line. Brought up one end and it was an 11" perch. On the other end was a decent ice fishing pole in perfect condition. Dried the reel out and still use it on occassion. Trolling crankbaits on day on the Missouri, along side of about 30 other boats. We were all criss-crossing an area of 8-10 fow flats. I had about 40-50 yards of line out as we passed a boat than kinda turned in behind us. The were also pulling crankbaits. Sure enough, I feel my rod getting heavier. I knew right then I had caught one of thei lines. It tightend up quickly and I kinda gave it a small yank. I don't know what the other person was thinking, but splash, there rod goes in the water. Come to find out, he just had it laying in the boat, and not in a rod holder or anything. I reeled in my line and finally got his rod in the boat. He really wasn't paying attention and though a fish or snag had taken his rod. After a few laughs at his expression and the conversation in that boat, we kindly pulled up next to them and returned the rod. As it tourns out, he had just bought the rod 2 days earlier. CrappieJohn
Cooter and Pig....I find little humor in intentionally targeting wildlife with anything other than something designed to take them for food. Your posts are well outside of the intention of the original post. I certainly hope you two have outgrown your childish behaior while fishing...it makes all other anglers look bad. HawgTide
Just last week with BigLakeBa$$, I caught a 5lb catfish on a buzzbait! In about a foot of water, it made a huge explosion.
icehousebob
I brought a bucket of ice fishing rods into the house without removing the jigs. There was a sunfish jig on the end of a springbobber rod and at 4 am a half grown kitten jumped up and bit it. The entire house was in an uproar. Three of us tried to hold it down and get the hook out of its tongue. No chance. We hauled her to the vet, who happened to come in at 6 that morning. It was much easier with anesthetic. New house rule: No hooks on rods in the house. My brother-in law hooked something that turned out to be a 12 foot aluminum boat. When they saw what it was they got heavier line and dragged it to shore. He used it for several years before he sold it to a duck hunter.
metrojoe
I snagged a nice net and a rope with two anchors tied to the end of it while dragging lindy rigs on Osakis. All in the same fishing trip.
gorrilla
About 5-6 yrs ago I was casting a Jackpot on Alexander and a Blue Heron flew off of a dead tree on shore and landed in about 15 fow and stabbed my lure and after attempting to fly off with it he also got hooked in the wing. First of all it was weird to actually see this goofy thing act like an osprey and I'd never seen a heron sit in deep water like a duck before... Trust me I didn't want him on my line its just that it all happened in about 3 seconds. Needless to say my Musky fishing buddy and I were relieved when I set the hook and the Pterodactol popped off... The walleye fishermen trolling by asked how I would have fit him in the livewell and I assurred them I was a true sportsman and would have got a replica made... Scarecrow22
Had a duck get tangled in my line. After quite a battle, was able to pull her to the boat and got her untangled. Let her go in the water and she just swam away like nothing had happened.Once on a remote lake in Canada, I snagged a rope that was attached to the bow section of an old wooden rowboat. No idea where the rest of the boat is/was.
JLsTyee
About 10 years ago a friend and I were Catfishing off a bridge over a Nebraska power canal. Two poles each. I had a nice cat on one and he was assisting me. We looked up just in time to see my brand new pole take off over the railing. After several minutes of fowl language, We decided that we were going to pack up and head to town to get a new pole. About that time my buddies pole had a hit, after a pretty good strugle the end of his line appeared... Low and behold My new pole was tangled around the end of his line. But that's not it... He was still fighting a fish! We got my pole untangled from his hunk of liver, and I finished realing in a five pound channel cat... My "Lucky" pole has since been retired to my fishing room.
