Deer Shedding!?!?!?!?!

Recommended Posts

Just got a call from my dad that he shot an 8 pointer tonight with the smokepole. When he walked up to it, it had already shed one side (very fresh) and when he grabbed the other antler to drag it, the other fell off as well. This is as early as I can remember any sheds being reported. All you shed hunters get ready...:) And no, he didn't shoot the antlers off

Had a buddy shoot a big "doe"a few years bck Dec 3rd when he found it the doe had two bloody holes in head! Hve also witnessed a few guys grab bucks shot muzzelloading an the horns pop off!

Makes for good question how do you tag it?

I have see this early shedding while hunting the metro the past two years. I think it has to do with a hard rut (for the particular deer) and a quick drop in testosterone to conserve energy. I suspect nutrition as well maybe poor as they eat meadow grass or flowers and yard plants where we hunt.

Man would that suck.

Shoot a buck, go up and his antler falls off..... And you dont have an antlerless tag.... OOOOPSSS.

Not overly surprising. It happens. Not the norm, but happens.

My neighbor shot one a few years ago during muzzy season and when he got home and unloaded the deer from the truck an antler just fell off. Not broken off.

4 years ago I saw 2 bucks with 1 anlter near Angora the first week of rifle season. One was a 2 1/2 year old with a 4 pt side and one was a spike. Both came within 40 yards in the open and did not look to be broken off.

We are starting off with lots of snow in the North this year. 177 could be back in the antlerless lottery very soon. At least the wolves will have plenty to eat.

Have a nice day

Steve

I was just going to say the same thing, the buck may have been physically worn down from the rut. he could also just have the genetics to drop them early, I've seen trail cam pics from either April/May and the buck was still had hard horns from the previous year.

Just rifled through all my buck pics from last March, but this is a new year so to those that want us to push back the rifle season, thus possibly pushing back muzzleloading.........Some areas they definitely shed sooner than others, I'm in about as late of shed spot as possible and 1 of my other areas is about as soon as possible, both are in farmland, the only difference is the late area is in really rich fertile black dirt farmland and the early area the soil is clay, there must be some other differences also. But past history tells me my time is wasted until mid-march, the trailcam is huge for shed hunting, I want them to drop sooner this year for once, spring thaw ruins it every year somewhat.

its not "early". most guys are simply not in the woods this time of the year! i've seen two shed bucks and one half rack already.

see my post in the archery forum; and you'll see~ smile shedding early is unfortunate sometimes but, finding sheds is very rewarding.

last year, i found four fresh sheds BEFORE christmas:)
