Favorite Deer Hunting Ammo

Recommended Posts

I like, actually, my Savage 30-06 seems to like Federal Power-Shok in 150 grain. I seemed to have the best accuracy with it anyway, also tried various Winchester and Remington loads, but the old Savage seemed to like the Power-Shoks the best. I've shot 6 deer with 6 shots in the last 3 years with it, so I think I'll stick with it!

Shooting the Winchester 140gr Fail Safe rounds through my Model 70. Bought a box of Federal Fusion last year and the gun doesn't shoot them well at all. Bad thing is this will be my last year with Fail Safe's, and I haven't seen any around on the shelves. Think they don't make them anymore. Have to find another Winchester Ammo the rifle likes!

Hornady SST 12ga. They pack a punch, but they don't leave a huge blood trail. I still use them every year.

Same here. It taken 14 deer in 5 years and havent had one go further than 10 feet from where they were and several shots were at distances of over 100 yards and 3 were running. There may be better out there but I'm content.

I've had some good luck with the F150 caliber. One was a 99 Super cab and the other an 06 super crew. For sure not the way I want to get a deer plus it is very expensive. Hoefully Federal comes out with cartridge that shoots a bullet with lights and a horn on it!

Thats Funny.

When I hunted with a gun it was the Winchester 2 3/4 Slugger's.

Shot accurately as heck through the Remington 870 with a red Dot scope.

Cabela's Precision Rifle X-Tended Range Sabots with the Smoke Pole.

hey steve foss, i shoot the same federal premium barnes expander tiped sabott slugs. i love em!!! but they arnt rifled they are SABOTS!!!

Um, I know. I called them sabots. Should have worded the other part to read: accurate for a rifled slug gun (Mossberg 695). smile

Sure do like that 2 3/4 and 3/4 oz load. More accurate than the magnums (2-inch groups at 100 yards is my best so far), still tons of knockdown power. The buck in my avatar was taken with that load last year. Neck shot. Went in low, traveled all the way up the neck and came out right between the eyes. Neck was like jelly inside. smilesmile

I shoot the Hornady SST, 12 gauge. I actually have had plenty of deer run when hit with these slugs, but they don't go far. maybe 50 to 100 yards. The nice part is that they are so accurate, once I see the hit, I let it go. The blood trails are usually pretty easy to follow.
