Rod Case Ideas

I've purchased a few rod cases in the past couple years and they have all had a really poor quality build to them. Zippers break, seams come undone, rods tangle etc.

I was wondering what you guys do for a rod case? I've been thinking about buying an arrow case to put my rods in. What do you guys run with on the ice to keep the rods safe and untangled?

I found a hard sided gun case about 8-9 years ago, before the case craze started....It is a smaller one, but I can fit 6-8 rods in there. I do have to loosen the reel handles so they fit, but that is no big deal. It is padded and works great. Found it in the bargain cave at C's for $8. It is real nice in the portable because it fits right under the seat and takes up very little space.

I think an arrow case may work as well.

I like my cases with the Hard PVC tube insert inside of a soft case. Pretty cheep, but but you should use rod slicks or line will get tangled or guides will get hung up on each other. Take up very little room and can fit 3 combo's each. Use one for panfish rods, the other for walleye/dead stick rod.

One draw back is that it does not provide hardened protection for the reels (only rod). Not a problem for me since I don't put mine in the sled if I plan to fly across the lake when pulling behind sled/wheeler.

my redneck case is a piece of 3 inch pvc with a sealed end on one side and a screw in fitting and cap on the other. took a piece of chain and bolted it to the top of the cap. then took the loop part out of a lock hasp and bolted it to the side of the tube. so when i travel, i can put a tsa lock on it so they dont cut it. I filled the sealed end with foam to cushion and then when the rods are in the tube take pieces of loose foam to fill gaps and hold them in tight. i can get 4 rods in it. you could go tad bigger to 4 inch tube if you have several rods. i made it for about 20 bucks not including lock which i had

I have a Ready Rig back pack style. Holds just about all my ice fishing stuff i use. Maps, gps, dipper, tip ups, tackle box, extra line, bait pucks, ect. I use pipe insulation to wrap my rods. Kinda bulky in the portable but holds it all. Early and late ice though, it's great for walking out and stay portable.

You guys don't ever get sick of loosening and tightening your reel handles? I can't see myself enjoying that one bit on days of fishing a bunch of different areas.

I just use a soft rod case for rods up to 32" and I've broken 1 rod tip in over 5 years of having it. And that was due to my own stupidity of trying to force the rod out to fast. I will say that if you're not careful about how you put the rods away there can get to be tangled lines sometimes.

I actually never have to loosen my handles. My Abus have a 1 touch folding handle. wink

the only time I loosen my handles is when I am done for the day. If I am walking to a new spot, I hang onto the rods or set them on top of the ice house. If I am driving across a lake, I put them in the back seat of the truck. It takes a whole 10 seconds to tighten the handle of the reel..................

I loosen the reel handles in my soft sided case too. It makes everything fit so much better. But it can be a PITB to do it throughout the day.

I love my soft case and how much I can securely store in it for a day of fishing, but I am looking to get an otter rod holder for those days and trips when I am pulling my tub around on my wheeler. The only questions is whether there is a monster box in my future and if I should get the rod case that attaches to the monster box... ?

Just wondering if anyone uses those rod tubes that were around a few years ago? The ones that look like golf bag tubes with a molded cup with bungies on it that holds your rod in the tube. I haven't seen them for a while, but that is what I use with a soft side bag and haven't broken a rod in 7 years since I started using them. Thought that was a great idea. Wonder what happened to them?

I have a Thorn Bros. bag. Has 2 zippered sides for rods, 3 large pockets, and so far has kept my rods safe from breaking, and I'm not easy with the bag in the portable! Probably should, but I've had 8 combos in this bag!

I may have to buy another one at the ice show this year!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
