For those of you throwing lipless cranks early in the year, are you working them on top of the weed beds, or on deep weed edges, or what? I have only caught a handfull of fish on these, and want to add them to my arsenal!

I had most of my luck using lipless cranks in a large shallow (4-6ft) bay that contains a weed bed as the summer progresses

Lake Fork Magic Shad

Spinnerbait

XRap hard Jerkbait

Drop shot

Lipless cranks

Daze off-I looked up those Magic Shad. I've never seen those before. They must have some great swimming action. When do you find they work the best?

Their action far surpasses any other fluke-style bait IMO anyway. I have success early tossing them around bedding fish and then I use them pretty much all year around weeds and pads letting them fall into pockets, etc. or on the weed edges. Only thing they don't do well is skip under docks... wink I fish them texposed and weightless for the most part with either a 3/0 or 4/0 hook depending upon how fast I want the fall to be. Also fish them on braid mostly since it gives me the punch I need on hookset and to get the fish turned in the weeds. Have dropshotted with them on occasion but have found other things that work better for that presentation.

Perhaps best of all - smallies love 'em too.

Juan- soft plastic jerkbaits are my go to bait in the spring. As for the weighted hook. its really going to depend on the spawn. If the fish are prespawn, and sitting in staging areas out past the weed edge leading to spawning areas, then yes, by all means use a weighted hook. However, for the most part, early season to me is fishing inside weed edges. Thus not using a weighted hook. However, often I am using a mustad 4/0 or even a 5/0 hook which are quite heavy on their own without the weight on them.

I noticed a lot of you guys put soft plastic jerk baits as one of your top six spring lures. Do you rig those with a weighted hook?

it depends on the depth fish are holding in. if they are in less than 10 feet of water i usually go weightless. but if they are in more than 10 i use a weighted hook.

i also go by wind. if the wind is over 15 mph i will use weighted hooks so the wind doesnt have as much as an effect on the lure by blowing the line

Lol, I live half hour from the Iowa border on the Mississippi river, I have been fishing the buzzbaits from ice open til mid september then right before the ice kicks in, always seem to get alot of hits off them, least on the less windy days, its different everywhere I know so maybe that maybe the difference. Sometimes I hear odd baits being used, too and I try them out and what do ya know... THEY WORK! Its funny how that works sometimes...
