Knots

David Dudley talked knots with us yesterday and he said "if you like breaking fish off and reeling up to see your knot broke keep using the palomer". He said what happens is the palomer cuts into the main line with every cast and every hook-set. He said we ALL need to start using the San Diego knot, he tie's every bait he throws with this knot.(please dont post a link to Knot Wars, we've all seen them I'm sure) So lets hear what you use and why.

I use the Eugene Bend knot the most... Second would be the improved clinch knot, and the Trilene knot.. I do use the palomar some.. But you really have to be careful when you tie it, so that you dont cross the line. Palomar is a good know, and very quick to tie.. I just trust the Eugene Bend not more.

I only use palomars. One time I was casting a spinnerbait...I got a strike, set the hook, the spinnerbait broke in half near where the knot was tied. (This spinnerbait didn't have a twisted loop in it where you can tie your knot). I managed to land the fish because the palomar knot was so tight...kinda hard to explain without seeing it, but bottom line is palomar for life.

I used to love the palomar and its all I used but I had a few knots break every now and again so last year I used the uni knot almost exclusivly and cant remember ever breaking off. Uni knot is what I used most know on mono and flouro and palomar still is the only thing to use on braids.

Im gonna look into this san diego knot...

I use a palomar with Fireline, and generally go with an improved clinch on everything else. I can tie the clinch so fast, it is super easy for me. I have had clinch knots come out a couple times on fireline and it really burns a guy the wrong way.

I use the uni knot for almost everything from 2lb ice fishing line to 80lb braid. Also use the back to back uni for line to leader connections. I have messed around breaking lines on purpose, and of the few tried, the uni knot was the best for me. There are only a few exceptions I use other knots in.

If you use a drop of superglue on your knot(only with braided line i do this with) they wont slip out on ya.

I prefer to use knots that have two parts of the line hold the lure. As the palomer knot has. So I go with the redundancy of the Palomer knot for terminal tackle like snaps. That is one of many knot one should know but I guess that is more for the fly fishing form.

I tie the San Diego knot. I actually did not know the name. If you drape it over your fingers and make the twists then put the tag end in the fingers that are draping the lure you pull it through and only takes a second to tie. Make sure you wet it before tightening.

I visited the Berkly trailer and they have a knot machine that tests your knot. The guy was sure his knot would prevail. The knot I tied on 8 pound test went over 19 pounds before breaking and the bBerkley rep has his knot break at just over 16.

I use the Eugene on flouro and mono and the double uni on braid. One disadvantage of the palomar is that it actually pulls "out" of the knot when you pull on it. The eugene pulls down on the knot when you pull on it.

I'm looking for a new knot to use with flourocarbon - palomar breaks way too often on my dropshot rigs. Seems fine with other applications for some reason.

Palomar all the way on braid and improved clinch on mono.
