Cecil
Do you guys have a lure that is on your rod ALL season? A lot of you have a jig rod but it occasionally gets a flippin tube on it or something. One rod same exact lure all year.Mine is a white or sunfish colored swim jig. Has been that way for 3+ years now.
Craigums
I think you can always catch me with a white spinnerbait on a line.
Deitz Dittrich
I got a few Brent...Flipping rod-Always has a jig of some sort.. Flipping Rod #2 - ALways has a Flipping tube on it! ALWAYS!!!I too have a designated Swim Jig rodand a designated Crankbait rodand a designated Spinnerbait rod.
Cecil
I have crankbait and spinnerbait rods all year too, but they have many different crankbaits on them throughout the year. Can't pick just one for the year like I do with the swim jig.
bemidjibasser
I have a "trap" rod, a crankbait rod, a jig rod, and a drop shot rod that are always rigged with those baits. I am waiting for my new avid blank to get in so I can build a permanent swimbait rod to add in to the mix. The rest have some sort of plastic or hardbait rigged of various types. Ray Esboldt
Until a pike bites one off (or I retie), I always have an 1/8 oz. mushroom head on the same spinning rod. And, I probably make more casts with that rod in a year than any other.
TonkaBass
I have a flipping stick that has a blk/blu jig on it with a super chunk or chigger craw 70% of the time, the other flipping stick is for creatures, tube, and other colored jigs. I also have a drop shot on my drop shot rod all the time. Other than that there is a lot of cutting and retying!
dfv87
I have a rod texas rigged rod set all year; the worm, brush hogs etc change but the rig remains the same.
Superduty
I have a weightless senko tied on a rod all year long. Cleans up on missed strikes even when I'm not fishing primarily with the senko.
jwhjr
I have a weightless hook rigged up for wacky/texas rigging all the time.
Bassman55
I have a flippin stick with a blk/blu jig on all the time, even if I don't use it that much. My light texas rig rod never has anything else on it. I have two spinnerbaits rods that have spinnerbaits on all the time, but different colors/styles depending where I am at. I have one rod with a trap bait on all the time. I also have a MH spinning rod for fishing wieghtless plastics, mostly power slugs.
polarsusd81
How about this? Rick Clunn was portrayed in an article in In-Fisherman magazine last summer. In this article it explained how he uses the same rod, reel, and line setup for every rod in his boat. He does this so he can feel the variations in the baits and how they are working, trained his senses many years ago to do it and it works for him. If I remember right, he uses a 7'-0" H MF rod with 17 lb line or something like that.I personally could not do that, I fish too many different baits from heavy jigs to super light stick baits and small plastics. The only rod I have rigged with one bait all year long is a muskie stick with a double cowgirl. I don't have enough bass sticks to keep one bait on all season. The closest I can get to that is my crankin stick with a Bluegill DT-10. Deitz saw the magic that thing can produce. TonkaBass
17 pound would be pretty hard to manage for most baits. How does rick clunn fish a crankbait deeper than 10'???
Cecil
Maybe thats why he hasn't done much the last few years other than a little run last year.
Craigums
Maybe thats why he hasn't done much the last few years other than a little run last year. Being competative in the circuit for all these years says something in itself, winning lately or not...I read the article also, But like you said Tonka how could you stand fishing a little weighless plastic on 17lb line and a heavy action rod? polarsusd81
That was my thought reading the article as well. It would be very difficult to fish with basically one rod for all your different baits. I would think it would be next to impossible to fish lipless cranks on that as well, it seems the fish would be able to toss em no problem. Cecil
I'm not taking anything away from the guy! He's a legend in our sport, maybe the best ever, but I think there's something to be said for accepting change.
ikeslayer
i thought he just used the same rod and reel - i was pretty sure he changed line on different combos. i only read part of the article so i could very well be wrong.
JeffB
Not always but this last summer I one with a lindy with red hook and yellow bead the whole summer. Had to replace it a few times, but it was kink of my go to. I am kink of a jig guy, but had my worst jigging year ever. It seemed the lindy was out doing my jigs most of the summer. One of those things you just cant figure out does the red hook and yellow bead really make a difference compared to plain lindy. It did for me this year maybe next year I'll have a new favorite. RK
Hiya - I have one rod that has a 4 or 5" grub on it all summer. Head size and color grub change from time to time, but there's always a grub rigged on it - does that count?Re: Clunn... I read the same thing. I think what you have to consider in the story is that we're talking tournaments here, and more importantly fishing style. Clunn's a power fisherman. Granted, he does it with a lot more thought put into it than a lot of guys, but that's his strength. You won't see him drop shotting a whole lot I don't think. Even for a guy as experienced as he is, he admitted that switching gears to target smallies on Oneida last year really was out of his comfort zone.Personally, I think Clunn is one of the best there's ever been. I've talked to him a few times at ICAST. His tournament shirt has the year for every Classic he's fished embroidered on his sleeve. It starts at his elbow and pretty much goes up to his shoulder. It's pretty amazing.Cheers,Rob Kimm
TonkaBass
I'm pretty sure he's not alone by not changing rods. I remember reading that Ron Shuffield also only uses 7'ers, but I think he changes the action up.
