Select comfort adjustable beds??

sparkyaber

Question

The post says it all. I am looking to replace an old (4 year old, expensive mad.gif) innerspring mattress. I shelled out good money for the mattress and it is junk, my wife and I roll to the center. Box spring broke, and we didn't catch it right away, so it ruined the mattress.

I have a few co-workers that have had these beds and really liked them.

Reviews on-line are split about 50/50 with people either likeing it or hating it. I also see that their stock is plummeting, which makes me uneasy, will this company be around in 20 years when my warranty expires?

I am really on the fence about these beds I would like all opinions(only from people with experience wink.gif) good and bad.

Thank you

we have the king size which uses a two bag system.

you can feel where they meet and if one side is alot higher than the other it does feel like your rolling down hill.

i sleep ok on it but would not buy another.

THe wife and I just bought a new bed and actually chose against the select comfort and a similar style air bed of a different brand. If you can agree on a style and softness to share than innerspring is the way to go.

Also a little note is that you don't NEED a boxspring. ALl you really need is a solid platform to rest your mattress on. Our new bed was designed to not use a box spring and since our innerspring mattress is so dang thick we didn't need any kind of spacer to raise it up. We bought ours from HOM furniture in bloomington. Great folks and easy to work with. We spent over an hour deciding between 2 mattresses and the salesman answered all our questions. Oh yeah and we saved about $2000 compared to the airbeds.

We bought one app. 2 years ago. absolutely love it, we did have a problem with the 2 different firmness thing. We called Select Comfort and explained what was going on they sent a different divider to us at no charge. It took care of the problem. As far as the mold we check ours monthly and have not found any. I suffer from inflamatory arthritis along with much of my extended family. Currently 7 couples that are relatives of mine and some of these have the arthritis problems sleep on these beds. All love them along with my wife and I. Don't be afraid to try one, We love ours.

Powerstroke -

You mind sharing what you guys bought??

We're looking at a new mattress as well, since ours is getting up there in age...

As for the Select Comfort, rent a room at a Radisson some night, most have them, it'll list which ones do on the HSOforum.

My wife's opinion is the same as mine.... two thumbs down, sorry.

We've had ours for about 6 months now and at first I had problems adjusting to it, but it just took me a bit to find my sleep number. I used to be a restless sleeper, turning from side to side. Now I fall asleep on my back and wake up on my back. I don't think I hardly move anymore. We didn't buy the top of the line model, but I think the next model down. I want to say the 5000 model. If you have the space take a look at the king, that would be the only thing I'd change about ours.

To lwnmwnman,

Ours is a Serta Perfect Sleeper Lakeshore. I figure it was around $1000 for the king size. I guess it was more expensive than I thought.

As anyone hear will say though, the price should be secondary to comfort. With this mattress I sleep like a dream and no longer get headaches in my neck or a sore back.

Go in and try them all out. I'm sure you'll find something you like. Thats the most important thing.

You saved $2000 ove the air adjustable. Hmm they must have paid you a $1000 bucks to take it. Ha. Anyway. We got the Select Comfort a couple years back. For all the same reasons as above I wouldn't go back. But we didn't pay over but right around $1000 for it. Heres a big secret. If you are not in a hurry to pump it up and can handle slower changes on the firmness opt for the smaller pump and throw out the controller with the numbers. Doodads... You adjust the bed by laying on it and pumping it to a level that makes you feel best anyway. The initial test on their samples they ask you not to look at the numbers and firm it up past where it is comfortable then bring it down slowly until you hit a good feeling. So save $500-$700 and skip the little number display. Save another few hundered and go with the smaller pump. Heck the only time you need the pump to be fast is when you first fill it or maybe after moving it. Otherwise you want a slower fill. We have the king by the way. It ran right around the $1000 mark.

We have a king sized Select Comfort and I'd not have anything else. The 60 vs. 30 settings on the two sides of our bed seal the deal for me. I can't handle what she likes to sleep on and she can't handle what I like to sleep on. I don't know how the heck we could have ever picked one bed but for this...

Would you post this for me?

I would never say you have to buy one of these beds, but I do believe you should know some facts that seem to be misrepresented here. The company has been around for 20 years. Their stock is going down because they aren't going to make their 1 billion dollar sales goal this year. They knew it was going to be close and they are still showing double digit increases from last year. And you know what they are doing with that low stock price? They are spending millions in a stock buy back to avoid takeover attempts. They have 442 stores across the US. And have opened 43 since March. That is when I joined the company. They are building a new corporate headquarters at Bass Lake Road and 169. None of this sounds like they are going to fold anytime soon to me.

We have owned a bed since 2000. We had the mold problem and they completely replaced the innerds of the bed for free. They have changed the materials to avoid that problem in the future. Again, I donlt care if you buy a bed or not. I'm just saying it's a good company.

Select comfort recently split their stocks and that is the reason for the lower stock value. Coming up with the sleep number bed really saved their bacon. The company currently is pretty strong and I would not worry about the warrenty. The mold issue is pretty dumb. People sweat when they sleep and moisture creates mold. The reason it is obvious on the select comfort bed is the mold forms out in the open. On conventional beds the mold forms below the surface where you can not see it.

I did a lot of searching for beds and the select comfort was nice when my other half and I looked for beds. However, we eventually went with a Simmons Beauty Rest for one reason, the individual coils. They are not connected so you hardly feel the other person at all!! The price was much better and we both found the perfect soft pillowtop type firmness.

You can always get the 29.99 coleman special grin.gif

Seems to be about half and half here also. I guess it is one of those things: Great for some horrible for others. For those of you who don't like it, what were you looking for in the mattress? I guess I should as the same question for those of you who loved it also.

My desire, was to sleep all night with no discomfort when I awoke.

I SHOULD clarify my post. It was for 2 nights at the Radison in Duluth. We had basically a large full / small queen I guess.

You could easily tell where the outside of the mattress was. Also, pretty much all night, no matter where the matresses were adjusted to, you could feel the divider in the middle.

I know I should probably check it out again, maybe on a different setup, but it was to the point that we were so not impressed, that we don't even see a reason to try one again.

If you are single don't get the dual chamber design get the single chamber. Then you won't feel the divider in the middle. I have a select comfort bed and love it. I don't have any back or neck problems but I notice I sleep deeper in the night. I think so anyways because I feel more rested in the morning. For $500 you cant beat the price. I guess I was lucky enough to have a friend who worked at Select Comfort. If your gonna buy one don't buy their base for the bed, as all it is, is a plastic box. Use your old box spring and put a peice of plywood between the box spring and matress.

We've had a queen dual chamber for almost 10 years. We think it is much better than the innersprings we've had. I always wondered why I slept so well at my friend's cabins. Other than the beer consumed, it was the old, soft mattresses. From this I realized I needed a softer mattress. My wife likes her side even softer than mine. If you have a sore shoulder, back etc. you can adjust it to be the most comfortable. I even adjust it differently if I sleep on my back or side. I would suggest getting the king instead of queen if you are broad shoulderd since the divider and edging take up some of the width. You've heard of the sleep number, well there is also an amorous number you adjust both sides to for maximum pleasure. Ha! Ha! Google for "air beds" etc. and you will find other companies that sell the same type of air adjustable beds for hundreds less than Select Comfort. I have no experience with their product though.

Update: My wife said enough was enough and we needed a new bed yesterday! She has had sore back and her hand has been falling asleep reccently. We went into store thinking about buying the middle of the road model, but I made the mistake of trying the next size up the price ladder. It felt a lot like an inner spring mattress, not like an air bed, like the two models right below it. To me those felt like the air mattress that I put in the back of my pickup while camping. We also got the extended queen size bed because the wife thinks the dog should share the bed with us. mad.gif

I will post again in a few weeks to share my feelings on it. Oh, I also was told I could try it for 60 days instead of 30. I figure if I don't like it after two months, I never will.
