Ice Fishing Pet Peeve's

The guy that goes to the local bait shop and asks if anybody knows how the Guy with the only house out on the rock pile is doing. They tell him of course that he is doing lousy, he just sets up there every year out of habit. The wise young man then informs the attendant that he just decided to fish there because he saw the house there the last 2 years and thought maybe the poor sap may have known something. Low and behold the young lad is on a honeyhole. He has good luck and wants everyone to know. DUH!!! The guy acually is dumb enough to tell the attendant that I am in the wrong spot and if I just moved 10 feet over I could actually catch some fish. I have a feeling that the young lad will actually think if he fishes 10 ft. from my house he will feel bad for me because he has such good luck and I never catch anything. Fortuneately I know the attendants and they have a clue. If you read this and can not find the hard water pet peeve in it. Stay away from other houses. If you understand the peeve, sometimes just a conversation before punching holes 1/2 before sunset may get you a tip on where to punch those holes.

30' probably not, if you've got beer! grin.gif I am also guilty of "aimlessly driving to a spot" just because I don't know where else to fish. But now that I've got the iFinder H20 with the lakemaster chip, I can find my own spots!

The question of "How close is too close?" is one that is tough to give one good answer to. For me it would depend on what type of etiquette the fishermen used. We are all out there to have a good time and catch fish. The lake is available to everyone. I personally wouldn't be offended by some one who is genuinely out there to fish with a respect for the resource setting up relatively close to me.

Well said caseymcq.

I think the answer to "how close is too close" depends on the time of year. I fish Mille Lacs and head out to the gravel as soon as I possibly can. When it is early in the season and the ice isn't as thick nor the snow cover too deep then I think it's important to stay away from other people. If you are hand-pulling a fish house, fine. But if you are driving a heavy truck with a big pull-behind fish house then I would stay at least 300 yards away from anyone currently fishing. They are probably fishing in shallower water and the noise you make will scare off the fish. As the season gets later, the ice thicker, the snow deeper, then you should be OK to go closer. It's more or less common sense.

Wow! 300 yards is a long ways away.

Me personally I think I would go with something like open water tournament rules no boats within 50 ft.

But, this will be a year of learning for me so have to feel as I go.

I listed "encroachment" as one of my pet peeves. Perhaps I should clarify that a bit. I get irritated when someone drills a hole within a foot or two of my fishouse while I am occupying it, and I'm not real fond of someone coming over and drilling holes within 10 feet of me simply because they see me catch a fish. I've actually had a person come and drop a line down one of my 2 holes while I had the line up rebaiting. That's way over the line.

50 ft sounds good to me and like what was already said if the houses are spread out stay spread out. also garbage i pick up an average of a pick up load every year on waconia if you bring it take it back with you and DONT leave it on the landing. LACK OF COMMON SENSE or curtisy. and last of all the id**ts that throw rocks on the ice at the landing to check the ice thickness.

I think it really depends on the situation. For Mille Lacs in early season I think 300 yards is quite reasonable for early ice and large vehicle-trailer combos. It is a huge lake with a lot of spots and you can find one just as good that isn't within 300 yards of someone's house. If you are driving one of these things at that time of the year stick your head out the window and listen to all the cracking and booming you are making. I believe that this is far louder to fish underwater than an outboard would be.

Most people are going to find this distance too far, and go closer. But they should understand that they are hurting the fishing for other people.

Good point. How about if I roll up with my van and my Fishtrap Voyager?

Well - Garbage on the ice is always a bad thing, I mean come on people pick up after yourself. People who drill holes in a plowed road, the long strech of clear ice going across the lake with cars driving on it is not a good place to start fishing. Snowmobiles, ATV's and people in there cars and trucks racing across the lake acting like morons trying to see how dangerosly close they can get to each other and people fishing. NO GOOD!

I have several but one of mine is people who think they have to use a power auger on 3 inches of ice. I know a lot of people claim they don't scare the fish away but I know for a fact that in shallow water on thin ice they will send the fish deeper. (where the ice is thin) I think making your holes with a spud bar on thin ice is nearly as bad.

Hmmm... let's see here.. in order of peevishness.. (Is that a word? Probably not, but what the heck, I'm gonna use it anyway tongue.gif)

1.) people that think that the roads plowed on the ice are freeways and feel the need to drive 50 mph. THe wake created weakens the ice, and it's just not safe to drive fast out there, car, truck, whatever... SLOW DOWN - The life you may save could be mine!

2.) People who leave garbage on the ice. Pick up after yourself. You made the mess, you clean it! hate to see what your house looks like if you treat a lake that way!

3.) Encroachment. If we all give each other a little space, we're all happier! I look at the "safe" distance to fish from someone else as the distance that I'd like to have someone set-up from me. (does that make sense?)

4.) Anyone who would break in to another person's permanent shack, regardless of them doing damage, stealing, etc. IF IT AIN'T YOURS, LEAVE IT ALONE!

5.) People who leave fish on the ice to die, with no plans of taking them home to be cleaned & eaten. If you aren't going to eat it, put it back in the water.

6.) People who make Swiss cheese out of the ice with no apparent rhyme or reason... I understand the line of holes on a reef, etc. on bigger water, but is it really necessary to do it on smaller lakes where there is a limited amount of space to start with? Try using your Vex, etc. through the ice. It actually works!

OH... and #1/2.) -

ANYONE who feels the need to take an overlimit of fish, regardless of species!!!!! If you see someone doing it, call the TIP line! When the paper lists the overlimits, etc., it makes us ALL look bad. It's illegal, it's immoral, and there is NEVER a need to take too many fish.

That is a good one Fishing buddy...guys who setup on top of me at prime time is a pet peeve of mine. If they pop one or two holes and quietly get setup that's one thing...but that is not the norm....usually its 20 holes...bang the shack together, yell to the buddy for a beer, yell at him for bait.

I don't mine if someone sets up close to me before prime time....but when prime time roles around...everyone should be all business and quiet.

Another pet peeve of mine is when I'm on a good blue gill bite I like to punch about 25 - 30 holes in an area (usually not right around someone) and hole hop. Well then you get someone coming over fishing out of your holes...without asking. If you ask me, I have never said no. But I've had guys come into my group of holes without asking and work their way to within 4 or 5 feet of me!

I know most of that stuff is not illegal...but those are my pet peeves. Thanks for listening...I feel better now.

In my opinion, someone who has the balls to drop their line down a hole I just lifted my lure out of to rebait is like trying to sit down and use the outhouse before I've vacated the seat!

I've also never had the inclination to crowd someone or put my house right near someone else's. when I place my house I figure, IF I was fishing there and catching fish, how close would someone have to come before making me crabby? And then I double that distance if possible. If someone is there I'll go stop by and visit, introduce myself and let them know my intentions. I've never had anyone yell at me for setting up too close to them.

The garbage peeves me.

The dead fish left on the ice peeves me.

Snowmobiles zooming my house peeves me. (especially when there is about 2 square miles of lake without any houses on it that they can zoom around on.)

The big thing that peeves me is, when someone drives by and asks how I'm doing and when I tell them how many I've caught they drive off and come back with 15 other guys and surround me. I've learned to answer their question, "Haven't caught a thing. I'm thinking of moving soon. Do you know any good spots?"

I do however think that in most of the cases mentioned here, with the exception of the garbage and wasted fish, that there would be far fewer problems if everyone just used a little Tact and respect. If someone comes up to me and says. "Do you mind if I fish here by you?" I would surely and happily say yes. They actually showed me a little courtesy and respect by simply asking.

I look at it this way; If I have two lines down and am catching fish, another guy with two more lines will attract more fish and keep them in the area by adding two more holes with bait etc. If I say no and they guy leaves, any fish he might have caught by me I wouldn't have caught myself anyway.

Historically, I've done mostly bucket fishing- alone.

One thing I like about alone- no one to talk to.

When some chuckle head goes well beyond the usual conversation (how's fishin, been out long, come here often, etc.) and breaks into his wife dumpin' him, work sucks, lost my license, etc. I get a little itchy.

Come up and talk any time, but limit the time! It's a bit different when you're out with a bud and someone comes up- because if there's any conversation you don't have to be involved!

Ahhhhh...Isn't icefishing one of the most relaxing pastimes?
wink.gif

Yes it is!

I have no pet peeves on the ice.

If some (Contact US Regarding This Word) wants to leave his garbage out there I will pick it up.

If someone wants to set up close to me I'll talk to him, maybe learn something or make a new friend.

If someone is stranded on the ice and needs to break into my permanent to survive i'll fix it.

My point is LIFE IS TOO SHORT! relax.

You have to remember that the ice is all public property. So leagally a guy can drill his hole right next to your shack or leagally fish in your holes. Dosen't make it right but unless he is fishing in your shack I'm sorry to say there is nothing that you can do about it, leagally . Once we start to take things into our own hands (and it will happen) then this sport will surely go down hill, fast.

With that said, I try to keep the same distance on hard water as I would in soft water.

My biggest peeve is cig butts and garbage.

My niggest pet peave is when you are sitting there fishing and a guy pulls up and runs his generator all the time.

My second is the herd mentallity. You fish a spot away from everyone but for some reason people come and set up right by you when there is plenty of lake for everyone.

I have to agree with a lot of the other posts here in saying garbage left on the ice is on the top of my list. It really dives me nuts when they freeze it in the hole. Dumb (Contact US Regarding This Word).

Trash left on the ice people bringing their dogs and letting them run loose barking at everything in sight sleds and atv's tearing all over the place making racket and coming close to my house when there are large areas of untouched lake to ride on also those few who blast their radio so everyone on the lake can hear it. Most people are respectful its the handful of (Contact US Regarding This Word) that ruin it for everyone elese.
