I use to subscribe to Outdoor News, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Sports Afield, Minnesota Outdoors, MN Volunteer adn a couple more I can't remember.

Now all the time I have is to read Outdoor News and the Volunteer. Oh, and the NRA publication National Rifleman.

In-Fisherman, Walleye Insider and a Crappie Mag that I think is just called Crappie. Recently Im hooked on taping the PWT series and watching that over and over. Its amazing what I have learned watching those guys and some techniques they try with success.

None. I have tried them all. Some have more interesting stories than others, but none of them seem to have any new information. Some (Outdoor News, for example) are so chucked full of advertising that it makes me want to puke. You can't catch a fish unless you are using line A, lure B, rod C, reel D, etc... I do very well on my own, but I do enjoy articles for the entertainment value.

Outdoor News and In-Fisherman. Used to get the mainstream Outdoor Life, Field & Stream and Sports Afield, but I hadn't learned anything new in them after I turned about 30. If you read the mainstreams for five years solid, you've gotten through every one of their seasonal cycles several times, and the articles simply get repetitive.

Though the writing quality is only average, Outdoor News keeps me up on what's going on around the state, and I learn something new in every issue of In-Fisherman. In-Fisherman folks also know good writing, and Stange puts together a good column, and sometimes tells good stories, in every issue.

Only thing I miss in the mainstream mags was some of the great old-timers who wrote outdoors columns for decades. They've been gone awhile, and in glancing through the big three now and then, I haven't seen anyone as good to replace them.

Agree with you, Steve. There's almost nobody writing regularly anymore who I would liken to some of the old sages-- Ted Trueblood, Russell Chatham, Jim Harrison (gone Hollywood), Bill Barich, and others such as McGuane, Traver, Lucas, Lyons, McClane (A.J.), even Gierach. All tellers of great stories, most of which were yanked directly from their often colorfully bohemian lifestyles. Live hard, die young-- that sort of thing, which while unfortunate, often does make for good writing.

Today, in outdoor circles, I'm usually sneaking into books by this James Prosek character, or occasionally Jerry Dennis, or rereading old goodies from Haig-Brown and the like. For periodicals, Grey's Sporting Journal remains a treat, as always. And if I want to learn about catching fish (I do smile.gif) then it's In-Fisherman wink.gif.

Poutpro...Whew! As I scrolled down the posts, I did'nt think FFG was going to get mentioned!

I quit trapping about 10 years ago, but I've kept that subscription and only that subscription! FFG has a little bit of everything at one time or another and a person can not only be entertained, they can learn about alot of different subjects.

The spectrum is huge, a reader can learn about everything from trapping, to noodling for catfish, to fly patterns for trout, to hunting for gensing and every other kind of hunting, to cooking your game, to fishing and everything in beween...FurFishGame has my vote, no question.
