Now that firearms season is over...........

Recommended Posts

Now that firearms season is over. What changes to the permit area you hunt in would you like to see based on what you saw (ex. lottery, hunters choice, intensive, etc.) With most people believing deer numbers to be low, I'm just curious how conservative people would be willing to go to improve numbers. I'll go first...I hunt two permit areas in MN.

183 - Lottery this fall(2013). Next year if I called the shots I'd like to see Bucks only.

227 - Intensive this fall (2013). Next year If I called the shots I'd like to see Hunters choice.

172 - currently lottery and should stay that way in 2014.

348 - currently managed. Never thought I'd say it, but should go to HC in 2014. If I based my thoughts strictly on our little portion of it - lottery. But I know the area is better than that. 2c

227 - IH in 2013. Not ready to go managed yet but getting close. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see it go to managed in 2014 though. HC seems drastic but come to think of it, I haven't seen nearly the number of deer on the roads during my commute that used to even two years ago. Sometimes I wonder why they don't just set a limit, like 3, instead of 1, 2, or 5?

152- HC this year. Lottery for next year. Did some island hopping the third weekend about a mile and a half in and just no sign there like previous years.

227- I think there's plenty of deer but intensive is too much. Managed would be ok.

126- Managed this year. My dad hunted here as I couldn't make it the days he did. He and other hunters he talked to didn't see a deer but could here wolves at night howling. I understand up there it's tough country to hunt but should be lottery.

I would agree about 348. Fewest deer sightings and shots I have ever had. I shot a respectable (but not huge) 8 pointer on opening day 3A, and before I pulled the trigger I mulled over in my head whether I should shoot or not. I'm glad I did, it was the only deer I saw all season. That includes my son who hunted 3B.

The problem with many of these zones is that they are too large and diverse. the problem with 183 & 156 is that the southern edges have high population and managed is fine for there. But the northern areas are very thick woods with tons of wolves and very few ag. fields. 183 & 156 should both be buck only in my opinion, but in the southern edges of the zones deer are thick. I generally have to go to land in the southern end of the zones to get a doe, the fields are full of them! The woods in the north are almost absent of them....

169 Has been lottery the past two years, I would think it should remain as such. I would need to see the harvest numbers for this year to make a decision on the number of permits given out. Is that data available yet?

that final data isn't usually available until February, sometimes later depending on how long it takes the DNR to compile and adjust it all

Now deer registration system is all computer and phone registration and 48 hours after kill.

Their could be preliminary results today- Wednesday or early next week close to final results where season has been closed. Individual zones you probably could e-mail the area Manager in the zone you hunt and get results.

Yes the tabulated report and writeup will be about February.

There could be, and those results shouldn't change. Yet somehow the preliminary results are always different than the harvest report they put out.

Some, but for years they had to hand count and recount hand registrations, plus the total harvest you still have bow and Muzzleloader going.

It is pretty close for the zones I have seen the last few years. I sure their is adjustment or early errors etc.

246 was HC, but I would like to see lottery for a year or two. Where I hunt anyways there was a decline in deer numbers and sign in general compared to years past from what I have noticed. During the firearms season it was really quiet with shots compared to years past.

I'm in 259 which is a HC zone. I think its borderline whether it should be HC or Lottery. I hunt the larger woods of the northern part of 259 but I know there are other areas that have more ag land so I'm guessing I'm in an area with lower density compared to the rest of the zone so its hard to say based only on what I am seeing in my one little chuck of woods.

leechlake, anyone who has a deer license, and kills a wolf, should be able to shoot two deer. The deer herd will be larger with less wolves. Deer camp is more then shooting deer, I baked 32 loaves of frozen bread dough at camp this year. Nine of us ate well, and shot four deer, over the first week. Hopefully we'll all be back next year. We hunted zone 1 north of Deer River.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
