SO only the things that inconvenience the poeple are closed, and not allowed, all other duties will be performed as usual. I wonder how much money the Feds are saving by closing the Shakopee launch?

That was necessary so they could keep the email and phone tapping programs humming along. Safety first. grin

While I strongly disagree with them closing the launches, parks, refuges, etc, there is a certain reality that we all need to face. The government has their hands in many cookie jars, and does a lot of things for a lot of people. Many of those things we take for granted on a daily basis. Often times we say "why do we have to sacrifice, why can't 'X' group sacrifice?" The other group is pointing the finger back saying "we shouldn't have to sacrifice...they should".

If we ever want this governmental namby pamby nonsense to change, we are ALL going to have to sacrifice something. I decided a few years ago that I am so sick and tired of our entitlement mentality in this country that I am willing to sacrifice whatever I personally need to in order to help the cause. Yes, that may include some hunting and fishing entitlements, and I am okay with that. We cannot as a country continue to be all things to all people.

YOu did not understand what I was saying at all Brian and I am not going to try and explain that to you.

I directed nothing to you Outdoors.

I do not agree with the closing at all but if the sign states, stay out or closed, then so be it. I will not go there to chance a ticket, not that important to me. If others chose to go through a closed area, thats ok with me as long as they are ok with possibly getting a ticket.

DTRO...I saw the SAME thing at the PARKING LOT in Shakopee by Valleyfair. Since apparently the FED's OWN the 6000 acres of MN river valley they can do whatever they want. How is that they can "close" off taxpayer owned land that has 70 miles of "access". Keep in mind this is EXACTLY what they want to do and that is stir up the middle class. And we will take it.

Liability.... All it takes is one person to fall into a washout on a trail or any one of a million things that could happen. They will not be out there looking for damage or doing repairs after a storm. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. They are not going to sit down and go site by site, they will just do a blanket closing of all federal land. I don't agree with this but unfortunately this is one of the very negative affects of living in a lawsuit happy society.

R U KIDDING ME! That's your answer. So if I'm camping in Denali National Park and get eatin by a bear, my family can sue them since they didn't protect me. Or if I fall in a Cravass at Glacier National Park?Once again, the fear mongering is taking over the MEN of this world. God bless the greatest generation with the go nads!!

So what's the gang banger going to sacrifice? What the inner city thug fathering 12 children going to sacrifice? What's the 26 year old mom with six kids and no father going to sacrifice? What's the 19 year old H.S. dropout going to sacrifice? How about the Wall Street billionaire hedge fund manager going to sacrifice?

NOTHING it all comes back to folks who go TO work and pay taxes and STAY OUT OF TROUBLE who just want to do a little hunting and fishing on land that the FEDS NEVER HAD TO BUY!!!!!!!!!!

yeah, I guess I wonder what law they can get for breaking by being on public land hunting with a valid license during an open season?

Hopefully this is a wake up call for people who think it's better to have more land in the government's hands and out of the private sector.

Oh, you're a taxpayer? BTW, how's that Dedicated Funding working out for you now?

At least the Army and Navy's football games are deemed essential and which we will have pay for this weekend grin Personally the closings do not affect me that much, and while there are probably not that many subsistence harvesters on the is site....but if one was, and viewing this...would tell them to hunt and fish away. Think the worst thing that happens.... if your "caught" and are respectfull....is your told to go home. Do not see this enforced that much, nor prosecuted.

Exactly right. Not only have we taken millions of acres off the tax rolls, we (taxpayers) also have to pay to maintain this land/park/refuge. A true double whammy.

Launched in Shakopee tonight. I couldn't read the barricade that was in the weeds. I have never seen a U.S Fish and Wildlife person down there and I would probably call one of my buddies to come assist me if I needed help before anyone else. It's a huge joke. I blame George Bush.

"If this shutdown continues and people continue to use the area, yes, I could see a new chain link fence put up and sadly, cost would not be a concern."

There is a law from the 1870's or so that says during a government shutdown, no government employee can perform any task or incur any expense that is not prefunded by congress. The employee would be liable for fines and jail time by doing so. I have heard that opening e-mails and volunteering to perform these tasks might be punishable.

Well guys "the government" is made up of many many different people working different jobs and they aren't all of one mindset. A few members of congress decided to dig their heels in to prove a point and make it a major pain in our behinds at the same time. The guys putting up the tape at the landing aren't to blame so don't take it out on them. They are more than likely just doing what they were directed to and are just as irritated by the shutdown as everybody else.

And by the way if it wasn't for dedicated funding and public lands I wouldn't have anywhere to go because I can't afford to buy my own land. So I for one am very grateful for it.

What good is it to you if it's closed or the Govt decides to make other plans with it?

And BTW, the State of MN is one of the larger landowners in the country. They most definitely don't need any more of what they can't maintain now.
