New Bait bucket and boat sticker laws to take effect (AIS)

The treat is real, the problem is here, we need to do our best to contain it.

The stickers is an initial step to educate us by means of mandated compliance... or many would not take it seriously at all...we all know that...right.

Same with the checkpoints, checkpoints verify compliance so they may better react to what is found...how else can they do it?

I think once we all know what is expected and we get the drill down it will not be much of a hassle considering the potential consequences if we ignore the situation further.

+1

I think our emotions are getting in the way here. This is hardly being done to get anybody elected, good grief. And not one person has decided not to buy a fishing license this season because of this or any other rules or laws, double good grief!

That being said it does blow we have to go through this and I do understand the paranoid Spielberg-ess frustrations.

I wonder if they know that putting bait into fresh tap water will most likely kill them?

I'm not too worried about my bullheads they are pretty darn tough. But large sucker minnows and creek chubs need a LOT of love, and this law makes transporting those types of baits very difficult.

Agreed...Untreated well water is going to be an issue for many.

Being allowed to bring clean water from the bait shop should be good...as it is by theory good to go and certified as clean.

The tag along spare water is a challenge to manage, but doable if you plan ahead.

I see a larger challenge come ice season on waters that are largely effected. Bait disposal and water exchange issues with cold/ice as a major factor. One thing at a time I guess?

LMIT, the Star-Trib article I quoted used figures as of Monday, May 16 and put the figure at 21 percent, with added perspective to deliver context. The DNT article you quoted used figures as of Friday, May 13, putting the figure at "nearly 30" percent and delivering little of additional value. Interesting the difference a couple days and a little more reporting can make, eh? wink

I guess we need to add a bibliography to every post now...

This law will not stop the spread of the invasives it's supposed to stop

How about if this saves just one of your small honey-hole lakes because someone followed the guidlines. So yes the invacies are here to stay and all there are trying to do is slow it down a bit.

Tap-water with clorine, like MPLS and other citys use will kill a bullie fairly quickly so I would get them back into your bait tank as soon as possible. Might be a good idea to use the clorine drops for the transport back home if in doubt on your tap water.

Since so many people are against water fowl I think I will use that as my reasoning to start hunting this year.

Mmmmmm.... spite never tasted so good.

I seriously doubt water fowl contribute all that much to the problem, and as mentinoned earlier in this discussion, we can't do anything about that. We are the species that CAN do something about it and we (the public, not likely the majority of posters here) have demonstrated that the DNR warning us and advising us how to prevent spreading these species is not good enough, so they've implemented laws to force compliance, rather than recommend.

They have to treat us like kids in order to make any real progress.

This isn't the first time we've had a scarlet letter in the state... probably won't be the last.

I guess I will mimic others here, I think this is a waste of money. The sticker deal is just throwing money way, rediculous. Bait containers is not a big deal to me, I mainly use leeches throughout the summer, they will be pretty easy to keep. It will be difficult for many to keep water temps in thier coolers close to thier bait buckets, so it doesn't shock and kill minnows, transfering lake temp minnows to ice cold water or lake temp to sun warmed water will kill them faster than anything.

Some parts of me wish they would just spread the current invasives to all lakes and move on and adjust from there. It would make for less "criminals". Plus it would more likely be less expensive to taxpayers. I really don't want these little bass terds in our lakes, but we are trying prevent the inevidable.

This has to be the stupidest law yet (espicially for minnow fishermen),However....

It could be alot worse. Imagine if they DID make us rinse our boats of with 105 degree plus water, wait 5 days before moving to new waters, Sticker system like other states have, Draining your motor of water....and so on!

There are a TON of other sources that can tranfer invasing species (Ancors, ropes, fishing tackle, drift socks). If it's the law, so be it. It sucks and I don't agree with it but it could be worse...way worse!

We need to pick our battles and this is not one. Saying other equipment is worse and can also infest waters won't change back the law, It'll only want them to INCLUDE those items as well.

This sucks but oh well!

unfortunatly stuffed shirts cant help themselves and some or all of the "other" stuff will come down the line. someone in the capital has to stand up and say enough is enough. educate the public and quit wasting taxpayers money and enforce excisting laws. we have enough already. take the weeds off the boat, unplug the boat, drain the livewell and change your minnow water at home if they last that long. we have enough laws. good luck.

Like I said before, they can't stop waterfowl from going to different lakes...

ya its all fine and dandy now the fishermen are the bad guys.... what about the large amout of wake board boats that fill tanks with lake water to create a larger wake no mention of them in this law....

if this is the law they need to give us acsess to water at the landing drop down a sandpoint well at each landing. you cannot expect bait stores to supply extra clean water to everyone. Heres to $20 a dozen bait.

I got checked by CO's at a boat launch in Duluth twice this past weekend. Both times they informed me of the bait bucket law. I asked if I had a leech toat (with a pound of leeches) that I never put into the lake water and only used the water that came from the bait shop if I was good to go and didn't have to dump the water/bait at the landing when I returned for the day. The CO said that would be OK. My problem with this law is there is no way for a CO to tell if I really did use lake water or not for my bait during the day. I guess the CO has to take an anglers word for it if they didn't put their bait bucket into the lake and only used the water that came from the bait shop.

I'm trying to figure out if minnow sales will go up due to all the wasted bait or down cause we all will get sick of the ritual that we have to go through to satisfy the DNR and then just not buy them anymore.

We have to do this and there is still no ballast water laws with teeth in the great lakes!

I might have to go buy stock in the bio bait industry.

I haven't used Gulp much, but to me it's looking better and better. I would imagine Gulp shiners, leeches and night crawlers work pretty well as long as you're trolling, drifting or jigging. If want to slip bobber fish they probably aren't much of an option.
