Don't be THAT guy!

I just went out and walked the property lines around my place and found 2 deerstands right on the line both facing where a right handed guy would have an opportunity to shoot when the deer meander down my fenceline. 10-15 yards off the fence with shooting lanes cut towards the line. I really think this stinks even though they are legal where they are sitting but the shots they have are over the fence and on my property(unless it is inside of 10-15 yards). This irks me and would most land owners. I guess I will have to erect stands along the edges to keep these folks honest. Now before to many folks go off on me the reason I am venting is that I know that the only clear areas to shoot are onto my land not where the stands are positioned. Each stand could have easily been placed back off the line and into the woods with a little bit of work cutting shooting lanes and give each person a quality shot, in the woods versus over my fence. Don't be that guy.

Don't know the whole story but I have stands next to fence lines. Its a small parcell of land and I have my stands pointed in directions to not have the sun pointed in my face even though it may seem like its pointed for shooting direction. I mostly just bowhunt so, the guys around me know Im not shooting down the whole valley or over the fence. I agree with not shooting over fencelines.I think there is a law about shooting over property lines but dont know for sure. If you knew for sure it might help you educate you neighbors. Always better to avoid confrontation before an incident happens. Seems your just venting and ya it sucks to sit and have someone that close.

Seems to me that if you own the property you ought to know who owns the property next door. Go and have a talk with that person. I don't think coming on strong makes sense but you'll have to take it the way you see fit. Since deer move pretty much regardless of fences isn't there as good a chance that one will cross the other property and come onto yours?

Tom7227, I purposely put up a single strand fence so deer could move freely on/off my property not with any intention of corraling all the deer for myself. I have no problems with the neighbors hunting nearby but when they stick the stands right on the fenceline because it has clear shooting versus setting up further into the woods and doing a bit of work to setup I have a bit of an issue. I do know the neighbors and it is people they give permission to hunt not actually the neighbors themselves that are setting up on the lines. They would have the same oppurtunities without the questionable stand placement if they moved back off the line say 20-30 yards into the woods.

On your property is it possible to block the lanes? Brush it in so the deer won't travel those areas anymore, thereby making their current set up completely ineffective?

That would solve the problem of them shooting onto your land. You might even be able to do it in a way that makes the deer move a new way and you would be able to put up a stand near that area--which would mean them being THAT guy would work to your advantage.

Good luck! Sucks when people are so clueless or just being jerk-baits...

I had someone do the similar thing to me. I had to take a leak so on my way down out of my stand I noticed a guy 30 feet away from me. Here is a guy sitting at the corner of his properties fence line and the property I was hunting. He had his gun resting on the fence pointing towards my way, and unknowing to him towards my father on the other side of a valley. We were literally 30 feet away from each other and I never knew it as my back was to him. He knew I was there because the tree I was in wasn't very big. I was ticked, got my wind age reading. Walked up wind of him the best I could and emptied out over the fence. After that I went back to my stand, grabbed all my stuff and hiked to the other side of the valley to get my father and let him know there is an [PoorWordUsage] with a gun pointing towards him.

As we packed up and left, so did that guy, after that we never saw him the rest of the season. I wonder if he wasn't even allowed to hunt there?

Not to be an Azz but you were also set up on the property line were you not? Granted he should have moved the direction the gun was facing once he noticed you, but other than that he had every right to be there and he wasnt the one to do his best to ruin someones hunt by scent marking upwind. Ive had people set up that close to me before and didnt know they were there until after sun up. Sun up, opening morning I wont be moving right away. I would make do until afterwards then move to another location. Without a map showing which way the stand were facing I cant pass judgement on what he was doing. But I have set up on fence lines before, simply because that was where the deer ran. I dont shoot onto others property, but down the line on my side, heck yeah. Its my side and i have every right to hunt it. If He was on the line facing into your land, then yes I agree with you hes a [poor word usage]!

I was away from the fence line. he was in the corner of the fence line where three properties meet facing my direction. Also, it was in the evening after lunch when we had came back and were in our stands for 2 hours. I saw the car drive by.

I don't have a problem hunting next to someone, but when you know I am there and you have 40 acres of woods to hunt, you tell me you cant find a better place to hunt?

I don't deer hunt anymore unless I know the other properties are not hunted.

A bottle of CHEAP cologne "spilled" on the way to that stand the night before opener might move the deer away from there...

Boy, do I have a person I'd like to do this to. But I won't. After everything that I've been through with this guy, I was still nice and took his lab back home after he came over to visit. Don't need any confrontations in the woods.

Acemac, I have the same issue as the original poster and to top it off found a bow stand on my property, my fenceliners have plowed dirt, 240 acres of it to hunt, but the stands the windows open up into my land and opening day let a full bladder loose on one of them. 1 of his poles would be about a foot onto my property so I soaked it, he started like clearing his throat coughing to let me know he was there, here's to being tired of all the weasel like methods of deer hunting and to all of those that realize they will be shooting onto someone elses land, but hey the cover of darkness, the I hit it out in the plowing it jumped your fence [PoorWordUsage]. When did deer hunting turn into the Barnes and Noble circus ?

It is pureinsanity pureinsanity, I've often wondered how many get drug under the fence after dark, I'm not about to ruin the few nights I can get out to guard like a watchdog my fenceline, I'll just keep a full bladder, might have to overeat the 5 alarm chili tonight and get out a bit early, I just worry about my dad and nephews who might not sit until total darkness only to disturb a deer on the walk out only to have these guys who honestly shouldn't carry a gun, I personally know who they are, fire in toward one of us, it happened 1 year and my brother in law was scared to death and confused as he had never hunted my land before, he came straight home after throwing the doe under the fence to this clown. If I wrote a book, the 80's best deer hunting ever for big bucks and lots of deer seen daily, the 90's it started to shift to where almost every field, patch of cover, etc started to get lots of hunter traffic, to the 2000's where what was already near capacity for deer stands is completely maxed out now and half of these people have 0 deer on the land they hunt unless they hurdle the fence which no problem, but do not use my land as your backdrop for your barrage of bullets. Actually ended 1 groups deer career near me, we feel much safer to the north anyway.

Consider yourself fortunate RRRat. It sucks to be surrounded by high powered rifles that just wait for the deer to approach your fenceline so who's the child here me or them ? It's a sort of trespassing with the bullet, not the body until the deer is hit and darkness falls.

I just love it....you guys say you hate people on the property line cause they are right next to you.....that makes you on the property line also....I dont care if I owned 40 or 400 acres, if I want to hunt on the edge of MY OWN PROPERTY, than i'm gonna do it.....if you don't like it move your stand....I guess unless ya see me shoot on your property the heck with ya, mind your own side of the fence.

You're not alone, I've got the same problem. Property in Isanti county and have a total of 4 stands within 15 yards from the property line. The latest one I found 2' from the line this morning in a tree right next to a stake with a ribbon identifying the boundary. The neighbor he is on only owns 5 acres. Funny thing is the guys I suspect is a neighbor on the otherside who owns 40 acres and have a hunting party of 4. Maybe he should think about downsizing his party. Unbelievable.

What I end up doing it plaster the boundaries with new trespassing signs and hope to catch them in the act shooting over or trespassing so I can make the call. What most of these hunters assume is that if they shoot a deer and it runs over the line they have the right to retrieve it. They are wrong! As long as it's legally posted they have to ask permission to get it and you can say no. Something tells me that the first time they ask and you say no will probably be their last time hunting that close.

I know a lot of people who would be glad to take the deer to hopefully drive the guy back and maintain my quality hunt.

Just curious, why hunt ON the property line and limit your shooting area by 50%. Common sense would tell me to back off a little cover a larger area. Unless you plan to shoot across property lines?
