riverrat56
that for the last week I've had a great temptation to dig out all my summer fishing tackle boxes and "organize" them?Normally I'm all kinds of excited about ice fishing but this year just hasn't been that way, for some reason I would rather skip going out on the ice to re-structure my crank bait organizational system...Anyone else wishin it were spring? bottom-bouncer
NO!!! I love winter it will 90 with 100% humidity soon enough!
Bassinbob84
I'm way ahead of you. I already have rods spooled and every hook I own has been sharpened and line burnt off. I think it's because of the crappy summer we had this year. My summer spots I look forward to all year didn't turn on until labor day. I still caught fish but it wasn't the same. I have spent the last week reorganizing trying to fit more baits I don't have room for into the boxes that barely hold everything I already have crammed in there. I'm planning on 3 more baits from the musky expo in April so probably more like 10. I think I need a little raft to drag behind filled with lures. Rafts can hold up to 50mph right? The bass stuff isn't so bad. At least it's all small unlike the ski baits. I haven't pulled out anything walleye yet and that's the first season to open. Scott K
I just havent gotten into ice fishing this year nearly as much as I normally do. Although there is still a lot of year left.
ac777
Wel last year I spent most of the winter fishing out of a wheel house. This years completely different. Havent fished out of a permanent yet besides for spearing. I sold my permanent and we havent pulled my dads out all winter, the conditions just havent been good at all. Ive also started spearing, which I have found to be more enjoyable than staring at a motionless bobber all day.
IceHawk
Don't feel alone went through my summer tackle the other day. I added some new trebles on cranks and did some serious organizeing. Next going to check rods and guides and start lubeing my summer reels.
Mr.Seaguar
Theres lots of things you can do now to make you a better open water fisherman. I been tying spinners, checking lakes maps, looking for new electronics. I am also the most diehard icefisherman. I dont get out a ton, but every week at least once. But now is the best time to prepare for late May.
CrappiesNCats
not odd at all nick, i find myself doing that a few times during the winter. helps with needing to know what to pick up.
JimBuck
I think it's completely normal. If anything, it's odd for guys NOT to get excited about open water come the end of January. I've been putting a hold on any additional ice gear and have been filling the holes left in the tackle box. Bring it on.
harvey lee
I have a few hard water trips for this ice season yet. But, I have been in the process of getting new things for the boat. I will have the boat out in approx 6 weeks to get ready for the Pool4 and 5 fishing.Won't be long and then the Sturgeon run.
porterhouse
Not odd at all! Around Feb 1st I start getting my reels and line ready, reading maps, lure inventory, sharping hooks, and stuff with the boat.Brian

mainbutter
I'm totally ready for spring.I have about 200 hand poured soft plastics ready to rock and roll sitting in a box in front of my tv where I've been doing my pouring.I have 6 new homemade hard lures ready to rock and roll.I have a small box of about two dozen panfish flies and poppers I've been working on recently.I have three new rods and reels, two still need to be spooled so I still have that to do.I'm so ready for soft water. The only thing left to do is do some shopping around for a canoe and a rack for my car.
delmuts
I try to do a few things once a week waiting for open water. Right after the first of the year it's cleaning/lubing reels, and checking rods. This week is taking stock of my plastics and seeing what i need to order. Next will be checking and sharpening hooks. Still need to spool some reels with mono. Then what ever else i can think of to pass the time!
mozy
I've spooled up some reels, sorted tackle, and tied and retied lures. I try to watch videos and read articles on different techniques that I don't know much about. I love ice fishing and usually make it out a couple times a week, but this year has been different. I don't know if it's the weather or what, but I've been more focused on open water.
Brad B
it is totally normal. this year has been a very bad year for ice fishing. I find myself wishing for the open water and this time last year I was killing the crappies, not the case this year. I have stripped my old line off my reels and will now clean them then respool in about a month from now.

tunrevir
I go through all of my stuff in March. Lube reels, take out all the boxes and organize them and clean any of the cranks that may need it. It is also my time to take inventory and make a list of bait styles and colors I need before hitting the water:) Not a bad time to take a quick photo either just in case anyone has sticky fingers. Yep, I'm getting ready for open water, not to much longer now.Tunrevir~
