deerminator
I don't want to single them out but did anyone notice a certain large retail store advertising bags of corn for sale among their hunting gear in the Sunday circular. I know they stock in the stores next to all the hunting gear, but let's at least try to be less obvious about it. It's downright ridiculous and I expected more out of them. Let's not turn this into a debate about baiting itself (there really is none in this state) but if you want to comment on the blatant nature of stores selling bait for hunting in Minnesota, please weigh in. 96trigger
Alot of these stores send the same flyers to other states like Wisconsin where baiting is legal. It would not be cost effective to change the flyer for one state. Now, if it was a local store found only in Minnesota, I think it would be different. RumRiverRat
I have seen the 40lbs bags of Corn at the retailer in question.Seems odd to have it in the hunting section.
Red Miller
I saw that too....just goes to show you that sometimes retail will do anything to up their sales whether its ethical or not. I often wonder about the array of deer lures like Buck Jam and C'mere Deer. That is obviously in some cases a food concentrate. I guess its legal....but it sure is a gray area. ozzie
Well not everyone that shops in Minnesota hunts in Minnesota so maybe they are for the many hunters out there that live and shop in Minnesota but hunt in Wisconsin.
LightningBG
Nothing gray about it. They are selling a product that is legal to sell. Its what you do with it that makes it illegal. I live in MN and hunt in WI as well as MN. Makes sense for me to buy items in MN on my way to WI.Shouldn't be any big deal in my opinion. I also agree with Trigger, they may be using the same ad for multiple states.Other examples: I have tires that are rated to go 120 mph, but it's not legal to go that fast. I carry 6 fishing rods in my boat but I cant fish with all of them. Most of us probably have guns, and people can get killed with guns, but guns dont kill people. Its all in how you use it. deerminator
Very good point 96trigger. Hadn't thought of that. The ad would make sense then and so would the placement in the store. Just kind of disappointing because I'd bet a number of people are buying it to hunt in Minnesota. But you can't prove that unless you followed everyone to their hunting spots. 96trigger
Also think of this, if someone is going to bait and break the law, regardless of if it is for sale in the store or not, they will find bait to use. I'm sure if you went to any store and looked for bird seed, you would probably also find ears of corn. Like lightning bug said, our cars can go well over the max speed limit anywhere (85mph), but we really shouldn't go that fast.
Red Miller
The gray area I was referring to was the legality of using some the the canned deer lures in MN...sorry for the misunderstanding.
blue_healer_guy
Maybe the intended target are squirrels, birds, rabbits , cattle, horses etc. Get over it.
deerminator
Wow. Never knew you can bait any of those. I'll have to try shooting some horses over corn and see how that works.
ac777
Wow. Never knew you can bait any of those. I'll have to try shooting some horses over corn and see how that works. Umm, No but you can feed them just to feed them, doesnt mean you have to shoot them.
picksbigwagon
I am not sure what ad you were looking at but a buddy and I were laughing last fall as we were at Gander MT. in FL and they had 3 pallets of shelled corn in a bag that was camo and had a picture of a deer on it. It was and is legal for them to sell the corn, what the buyer did with it was beyond their control. They also sell electronic deer calls and before it was legal, they sold lights that you could attach to your gun for hunting coyotes at night. the buyer is responsible for the lawful use of the products they buy
candiru
They also sell the valves for refilling disposable propane cylinders.
mnguy152
I wish I would have been smart enought to bag up $4.00corn ad turn it aroound and sell it to hunters for $9.00. Not a bad profit huh.lol
vister
its not necessarily for baiting. who is too say they plan on using it for something else. its illegal to drive drunk, but i've seen car dealerships next to liquor stores
BLACKJACK
One of my hunting magazines had a short blurb that in the state of Texas they sell enough corn for deer feed/baiting that it would take 80,000 acres to produce that amount. UdeLakeTom
Another thing to remember, is you can put out food up to 10 days before the season begans. Although that time period ends this week in some of the zones.
BobT
I'm curious. What do they charge for those bags of corn?
walterman
Too much! $8-9/bag. Food plots are the only way to go! Much cheaper and way more effective in the long run.
RumRiverRat
They also sell the valves for refilling disposable propane cylinders. OH NOES!!!!!!!!!
SkunkedAgain
They also sell pipes and bongs legally. I guess that people just use them as decorations in their houses!
BobT
Too much! $8-9/bag. Food plots are the only way to go! Much cheaper and way more effective in the long run. I hope that's for about 3 bushel. (180+ pounds) Otherwise, you're getting ripped off.
Red Miller
I pay about $7/50lbs at the feed store in FL. I suppose they would cut you some slack if you were feeding 100 head of cattle.
lakevet
Store gets the bulk of the profit, not the farmer as usual. Hunters happily pay highly inflated prices for the corn, then get to pay the fine if they use it illegally. I don't make enough to afford paying both the store and the DNR those kind of dollars. C'mere deer HSOforum at least warns you to check with your state to see if their product is legal to use. Would be nice if they would post a copy of the baiting regs on the shelf so people wouldn't assume a product is legal to use just because its for sale. But then who wants to see baiting regs next to apples, carrots, molasses jellies and jam etc. in the grocery store.lakevet
