I had some success this evening!

I got to a stand we call the Oak Stand at 3:50 pm this afternoon. This stand sits right on the SW corner of a food plot of oats thats 40 yds wide by 60 yds long. There was a west wind blowing about 5-10 mph hour.

The stand faces east and an ATV trail runs straight south of me for 150 yds. Around 5:30 I look down the trail and see 2 adult sized deer headed my way about 100 yards out. I grabbed my bow and got ready to see what would happen.

Instead of the deer following the ATV trail into the food plot behind me, they cut the corner of the woods and were downwind of me about 40 yards. At this time, I can see it's aspike buck w/ 3-4" long spikes and a nice sized doe. The buck throws his head up and starts sniffing the air and I thought it was game over, but they relaxed and walked out into the food plot to the east of me at 25 yards. The spike was first followed shortly aftter by the doe. Kind of backwards for this time of year, but maybe Junior doesn't have the game figured out yet? LOL

The doe got to 25 yards and I drew back my Hoyt Carbon Matrix, settled the pin just behind her front shoulder and squeezed the trigger on my release. My Easton ACC 300 series arrow with a Muzzy MX 3 100 grain broadhead was on it's way and found it's mark.

The doe bolted to the east and I could see my arrow hanging out the exit side of the deer. I knew it was a great shot as I could see the blood pumping out of the entrance wound with every jump of the deer. A short time later I thoguht I heard a crash. The spike stood around for a while wondering where his side kick went and took off.

I waited for 20 minutes and during that time I looked w/ my binocs and could see blood all over the ground.

I got down and followed a heavy blood trail about 70 yards to where she layed. She died within about 20 yards of where my brother's big buck died the other day and better yet, she was only 15 yards from another ATV trial.

I went and got our Polaris Ranger, loaded her up, and went to pick up my dad. He went to put his gear in the back and saw my deer. He was pretty ahppy to say the least.

He had a close call when 2 bucks came out onto the food plot he was on and the bigger one chased the smaller one around and both were grunting up a storm, but he never got a shot opportunity.

This was the same stand I shot my decoyed buck out of last year.

Small rack but a tastey deer. :>) Being dissabled and missing 2010 I was happy to arrow this guy from 8 yards while sitting in my chair behind a tree. Been to ND and pulled back twice on dandys but couldn't close the deal. Still I am happy. :>)

Went out last night to a stand that I used to hunt alot but with new ground have kinda abandoned(wanted, what I though was my good spot, to rest for the morning) just to sit and see. Seen a decent amount of sign on the way in including two fresh scrapes and a rub with alot of tracks through the neck down I was hunting. Wasnt seeing anything until right at dusk when I heard a deer cutting across the swamp between two willow thickets at around 125yrds. Pulled up the binos and seen that it was a big 8 but was just crusing with his nose up trying to catch wind of a hot doe. I grabbed my grunt call and grunted with no response(Im thinking he was making to much noise walking through the cattails to hear anything) so I grunted louder, he looked for a second but kept goin so I let out a snort wheeze and he turned toward me stopped for a second then started strait for my direction. Doubting the whole time that it would actually go by the book, I grabbed my bow and got ready before I knew it he was 40yrds and closing coming strait to my tree. I pulled back when he was at 20, he came into 5yrds where I finally had an opening, stopped, and I let him have it. He made it 15yrds before doin the stagger and he piled up. Then the whole reason I hunt kicked in.....The uncontrolled shakes, unhealthy breathing and heart coming out of my chest, when I realized what just happened. I called a 4.5 yr old 130" 8pt in to the base of my tree! Just goes to show ALWAYS ALWAYS hunt no matter what. When its the rut anything can happen but not if you're sittin on the couch..... full-2453-13681-imag0023.jpg
