are people shooting more then one deer?

Recommended Posts

With the bag limit being five deer in intensive areas along with the early season add another two, that adds up to seven deer. The state wants people to shoot deer, but how many are shooting more then one? I personally do the all season and early season and my freezer is already empty \:\(

I've shot four each of the past two years, and have friends that have taken more than me.

I have put more than four in the freezer each of the last two years, however. Seems those friends of mine can't eat all the meat they shoot.

Running a little low on venison right now. Only a little jerky, breakfast sausage, burger, and polish sausage left. Might have to start rationing. \:\(\:\)blush.gif

I hunt in ND and the unit I hunt in they give out extra doe liscenses. Anyway I hunt with my dad and my two brothers and the last several years we have each shot a buck and a doe. Thats eight deer for one family. But we usually give one deer to each set of my grandparents. We keep six deer, but my older brother and I both away at college and eat alot of it. I don't really buy any other meat besides maybe some chicken or hotdogs. We haven't thrown any meat away yet and will start shooting less deer if we have trouble eating it all.

I have been getting two a year for the last 3 years.

A hunting group I belong to got a hold of some stats from the DNR and according to them, only 13 people in the entire state shot more than 5 deer last year on their DNR number. Now obviously some people shoot many deer while party hunting, but apparently only 13 people shot more than 5 deer for their own tags. According to the president of our group, 4 of those hunters belonged to our group. We hunt in the metro.

The first part, about 13 hunters, that I will say is third party info to me. I trust the person who told me, but I don't know who told him exactly, but again, I trust him.

If I'm incorrect I hope someone with more concrete info will chime in.

My son and I ended up with 10. One was from SD on my archery hunt and the rest were MN. deer from archery thru muzzeloader season. We put 4 in our freezer, my aunt always wants 1, my buddy from deer camp took 2 and the rest went to the donation program. All but 2 were metro area deer.

I filled 6 tags in Minnesota (all registered) and 3 in North Dakota last year.

Gave the 2 early does to non hunting friends and 3 bonus does in Minnesota. Gave one N.D. Doe to a pard that didn't fill his tag.

With the end of the donation program I'll only shoot extra deer that I have a "home for" before hand.

Have TSX loads worked up for most all of my rifles anyway, wouldn't be much of a hardship to just shoot deer with copper if anybody is concerned about lead.

Which I am not ...

If it's more than 5 deer, I'm not one of the 13. I shot 6 in MN, but as it turned out I tagged 3 of those myself & then tagged 2 shot by others, while my others were tagged by other party members. A lot of that had to do with what size deer different guys wanted to take home.

I've averaged 6.5 the last 6 years, those were largely antlerless deer. I'm no fantastic hunter, but I hunt a lot & have some good connections. That includes some early antlerless, muzzle loader, archery, & firearms in MN, plus some archery in WI. Naturally I haven't tagged all those myself, but all have been tagged. I pass on a lot of deer, especially during archery, but will shoot whatever depending on who I'm hunting with & what they want. I personally probably eat 1-2 a year, but have lots of friends who will eat them. As far as I'm concerned these are the good old days of deer hunting.

So I guess in answer to the question, some people shoot more than one deer. I think the biggest majority of deer hunters only hunt a few days per year. A guy can have a good day or that great 10 minutes where you shoot three at a time. Those times just come around a lot more often to the guys that are out there all the time & they tend to be able to make it happen when the chances come. It's like most things, the harder you work at it the better you get.

I've been able to take two deer for the last three years where I hunt. I only archery hunt and don't own a rifle. I enjoy archery so much that I don't want to hunt with a rifle. I did rifle hunt when I was younger with my dad, but that ended when I shot three deer on opening day before noon out of the same stand. Took the fun out of it for me.

I have shot 15 in the last three years. I keep two nice does and give the rest away. Last year I shot six (MN and WI) and still had people asking for venny.

I have taken 3 a year for as long as I can remember. That is what my wife and I will eat in a year. One bow kill in So. Dak., one bow and one gun in Wisconsin. Last year I replaced the Wis. bow kill with a Montana mule deer. I sometimes shoot an additional antelope in Montana, then we need to get creative with the extra meat, but we like it, so it's usually not a problem.

I too have historically harvested 2 or more deer in a season as of recent. I’ve got a brother of mine that loves the taste of venison, but doesn’t like to hunt, and my father (pending his health) isn’t able to hunt very much…So I try to do my best to fill my required DNR tags, and take a nice buck along the way. I have to say, I’ve had a good couple years as of late, with taking a nice mature buck and maximizing my doe tags. The area I hunt appears to have very stable and plentiful herd numbers. So as long as I have that, I will continue to harvest deer, within moderation. My dad and my brother’s hunting season starts when the knives come out and the processing begins in my garage.

Is it fall yet???? grin.gif

From the looks of many of the posts, the hayday for deer hunting is upon us. I remember many years ago, one could only shoot 1 deer. One really needs to enjoy the opportunities we all have at this time for deer hunting as one day, we will be back to shooting less.

Taste like chicken,

protein, lean meat, overpopulated, lots of deer vs vehicle deaths, crop depredation, habitat destruction, GESH.......... can you even say Insurance is affordable anymore? Groceries are going to be unaffordable, I'm putting a cow catcher on the front of my truck tomorrow. Let's eat, celebrate the backstrap and give Thanks that hunters make perfect managers and conservationist.

And most importantly hunting is fun.
