Kaz
Provern: I think you mean LED lights not Diode. Cabela's has them as I looked at them last week. They have both regular and the LED type....Kaz
Dan Wood
Go LED for a headlamp... smaller batteries to lug around and much longer bulb/battery life...
hawgTime
POThe Princton Tec Aurora is a great LED headlamp. It's waterproof and lasts 160 hrs. on 3-AAA batteries.hT
hunt4food
I will second the Princeton Tec Aurora. I bought mine a year ago and used it the entire ice fishing season last year and used it for misc. things all summer and fall. Most recently, I used it during deer hunting to find my tree stand in the woods. I also like it for putting out duck decoys in the early AM. Amazing as it may sound, I am still using the original set of batteries.
Dan Wood
The Aurora is the one that I have as well - still on the original batteries after 2 seasons. These are nice and light weight and the led lights are easy on batteries.
Povern
Thanx for the advice guys, but is the Princeton Tec Aurora bright enough to see things when I cleaning up to go home? Or is it just a dull light to see the bobber in the hole?PO
Dan Wood
It's pretty bright - I used it as my only light source for ice fishing and night fishing most of the last couple years. I've been looking for one that is a bit brighter for certain applications, but the Aurora is bright enough to light up a small shack plenty. It is a bit of a trade-off with weight vs. light, the Aurora is a light and compact little unit that gives out pretty decent light.
iffwalleyes
Just don't look at it when you turn it on. Those little suckers are bright. rod bender
Go with the Princton Tech. I don't know why I used a lantern so long. These are definately the ticket, especially walking on and off the ice when dark. You don't have that hot lantern to hold on to.
kslipsinker
I would totally agree with all of the comments on Princton Tec Aurora. It is a nice unit. Comfortable to wear too.

Waterbeater
The Princton is the only way to go. I was skeptical too last season when everyone here was raving about them. I gave in and got while xmas shopping last year. I love it. The uses are endless. I have no trouble with it being too dim in my 3 man. I used it all last season fishing and for 2 months of checking cows at night during calving and I'm still on the original batteries. Just remember when these guys recomend something, they are tested to the highest degree under normal usage. You guys haven't led me astray yet. wall eyell be
I had a Princeton Aurora, liked the brightness and the different functions (bright, medium, low, flashing). However after one ice season plus one open water season, the switch gave out. The thing won't turn on now.I now have a Petzl Tikka, the same brightness and functions but I think it's built a little better.
Seeker of Clayface
When you wear a head lamp you might feel like a miner. But it is not gold or coal that you are mining. Rather, it may be a plump walleye, or crappie, or pike that you are "mining" from below.

riverboy
I have to second the Petzl Tikka. I use the Zippa model though. The Zippa has a retractable head band which you can put it around your head, wrist, arm, leg, whatever. It also can attach to the cross bar in your shanty or trap. My buddy had the Princton Tec Aurora, and ended up giving it to his kids to play with and he went a bought the Zippa. Check out the Petzl Tikka Zippa, you wont be disapointed!! EBass
I don't know where you live but I just bought a head lamp to at Galyans. I choose the Black Diamond Moon Light. It has 4 leds and runs on 3 AAA and it was $30. Very bright for close quaters and light weight.Petzel (or however they are spelled) has two new headlamps this year. The have a model that has 3 leds then a regular flash light deal. (way nice) but runs on 4 AA. The other model has 5 leds and a regular flashlight deal to. The first one is $45, and the super duper one is $70. The cool thing at Gaylans is they had all of them (a doz or so styles) in a box with batteries to check out. gvg_uwec
i have to agree to ge the LED headlights. I ended up buying a headlight at good ol' walmart this fall and i LOVE it. It is a rayovac with a white LED, 2 red LEDs, and a bright krypton bulb. I used the red LED for walking out to my tree stand this last weekend and what a difference compared to a flashlight. Also sat out in the rain all day sat and sunday and still works greaton the walk out of the woods. And the best part about it was that it was only 13 bucks..half the price of the other one that the guys were raving about last year. Im sure they both work great though
Nels
I have both the Tikka($35- bought first for myself)and the Rayovac($13 - bought for my wife) from Walmart. I was pleased with the Rayovac for my own use. They both work great. I really like the red LED's on the Rayovac model, you can still see with it, and I don't think it spooks the fish or woodland critters as much. With the Tikka, batteries do last longer than with the Rayovac. The Rayovac can tilt, and the Tikka can't. After 1.5 years, the regular bulb on the Rayovac did burn out. I haven't replaced it yet. The Tikka LED's give a kind of cool white (bluish) light, whereas the regular bulb on the Rayovac is more of a warm (yellower) light. I also just bought the Tikka plus (On clearance for <$20) This model does tilt, and it also has a power saving "strobe light" mode. I will hopefully be using it in the next couple of weeks. The LED's all seem to work fine in the cold.If I was going for just lightweight for a canoe trip I would choose the Tikka. If I am ice fishing, I usually take whichever I can find first. Nels[This message has been edited by Nels (edited 11-24-2003).]
J. Hall
I have a Princeton Aurora and love it. I have had it for two seasons and am still on the original batteries. The multiple settings are really nice to have. It is bright enough to use while walking around, yet you can dim it when you just need a little light inside the shack. Bobb-o
I have the Princeton tec Aurora and i love it, I am going to buy a couple for family for christmas cuz everyone in our hunting camp wanted one. Hey Wall Eyllbe the aurora's come with a lifetime warranty so if you have the box or the receipt mail it into them and you should get a new one------------------Diplomacy - The art of saying "nice doggie" while you find a rock. Steve Foss
I would now be lost without my Aurora. It's the extra set of hands I gained without having to fool with a flashlight. It won't light my way through the fog, but it's just the right amount of light in the fish house, and it's perfect for the walk back to the truck and loading everything in when it's dark out there. Usually I forget I'm wearing it until my buddy recoils when I turn to talk to him and yells about being blinded. ------------------"Worry less, fish more."Steve Foss[email protected]
Stradic
Have to agree about the Ray-o-Vac. I don't have $35.00 to spend on light so I went with it last year. $12.87 at Wally World. Use the red LED's a lot!
