maros91
Anyone have a good home remedy for these pesky critters or know of some spray they sell in the store? The outside of my house is infested with them!!
echotrail
Use some liquid Dawn dish soap mixed with water in a spray bottle. It KO's the little buggers on the spot.
DTro
I heard an add for a new product called Bugg Slayer. The wife bought some at Menards and applied it while I was away last weekend. I came home to a huge pile of dead box elders, so I guess it worked.
Ryan_V
the key is to get something that is "residual" most sprays just kill the 1-2 percent that you see when you are spraying, you need to spray a product on your house that has residual that kills any bugs that crawl on it. Powerstroke
These are so weak and easy to kill. I mix a bottle of dish soap and water in a spray bottle and spray them with that. Its cheap, easy and there are no chemicals to worry about. It will be safe for kids and the pets.I do use insecticides when needed, but for the cost and the easy factor, the home remedy is easier. It does only kill the ones you spray, but after you hit the same spot 2-3 times I don't find anymore. As far as them being in the house, just suck them up with the vacuum. Its easier then spraying them or trying to kill each one.

dustin85
My wife bought annihalator (sp?) spray. from menards, I believe. works great! It says it works for 30 days, and I can not argue with that.

sparcebag
Biff I live with soya bean fields all around me,Millions of asian lady beetles on south side of house.I tried the dawn soap,I even mixed it heavy and used a 2 Gal. sprayer,If ya dont do it hourly or even more often its a waste of time!Go for the insecticides if your around bean fields,I cant recommend any because I dont like to use them! However I'm ready to use em,unless this cool weather stays.Think I'll try the one from Menards,I got a cordless hand vac only for inside! In spring in my sheds I find 5 gal. buckets full of them buggers,I'd rather have millions of boxelders they dont nip!!
lawdog
Quote:bugmax 365 red bottleThat's the stuff I use too and it has had much better than expected results for me. I'm quite pleased with it, and as for the price, when you are talking dozens, if not hundreds of those on every window, you can't put a price on spraying once and being done with them until next fall!! Living on an acreage near bean fields has that one draw back but this stuff works wonders.
bucketmouth64
Where do the box elders go when there is no sun? Are they in the crevices of the home or do they fly off? I don't have a problem with them inside the home just outside by the front door.
maros91
They go inside the siding by your windows and corners. At least that is what they do on my house.
Dotch
Two very good links to U of M fact sheets on boxelder bugs and multi-colored Asian ladybird beetles: http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG0998.html http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/housingandclothing/M1176.html From our experience with the soybean aphid debacle, proximity to a soybean field may or may not affect the numbers that appear in your house. As the soybeans begin to turn and ripen or night time air temps reach 40 degrees, the soybean aphid begins to move to buckthorn. Some of the ladybugs will follow the aphids back to the buckthorn but essentially the food source in the soybeans has dried up. The Asian ladybird beetles are not specific about their source of aphids and in fact were initially introduced to combat aphids in pecan orchards. Those attempted introductions reputedly failed. During late season in MN, they seem to spend most of their time in the corn feeding on oat bird cherry aphids and corn leaf aphids to name a few. Once the corn leaves are frosted or the corn senesces naturally, that food source also dries up. On warm afternoons in late September or October they begin to look for winter shelter around building sites. As at our place, they will feed on decaying fruit for awhile. They particularly like apples if a bird or other insect has opened a wound for them to get in. They are omnivorous and may taste test you to see if you're edible. They monkey around there until they decide it's time to crawl in under the siding or set up camp behind the hay bales in the barn. Jeff Hahn may have an updated version of the last HSOforum but this is the one I have bookmarked. Enjoy!
maros91
Quote: bugmax 365 I was mixing up some dish soap getting ready to kill some boxelders when my wife stops me and says she bought some stuff in the garage. I looked and it is bugmax 365. I srayed some 1.5 hours ago. I went back outside and there was a big pile of boxelders on my concrete apron. Them buggers were in the cracks of the concrete. I sprayed some in there and they just came pouring out and died on the concrete. I also sprayed on the corners of my siding and they just started falling off. Thank you guys for all the helpful tips!! My wife and I really appreciate it!!

I have a hugh pile of bugs outside of my door where I had the biggest problems. So I think it works pretty well. I got a 1 gal jug and I think it was about $15 or so. By far the best I have found yet.
