What got YOU through college?

Recommended Posts

Standing in the grocery story today I was scratching my head on where to go to find something other than mac and cheese to cook up smile.gif What got you through college? I would love to start trying to cook different things to mix it up again. Thanks for any help!

I managed to get through college by having good timing.

I was friends with the girls who lived in the apartment below mine and I knew that if I showed up to say hi right around dinner time there would be someone there who just cooked something and was willing to share.

And by the way its not called "being a mooch", its called being "resourceful". grin.gif

You had to eat ramen noodles at .15c a pop. Banquet pot pies .50c, totino's party pizzas 99c, generic mac and cheese, spaghetti with sauce no meat and day old bread from the tasty store. I once ate PBJ 3 meals a day for 5 days just so I had beer $$ on the weekend. It was always fun to look in your cupboard and see what you could throw together. Sometimes it turned out sometimes it didn't.

One of the best things I learned was to make Ramen low sodium, by throwing away that little seasoning packet. 1500 mg of sodium per serving, and they call a package of Ramen 2 servings. Riiiiiight!!!!

Sodium free chicken and beef stock, Chili/Garlic Thai paste, etc. You can still do it and keep it cheap, but that stuff is horrible for you. Be creative, and get rid of that flavor packet, or you'll regret it by the time your 40.

And you won't wake up 10 times a night parched and looking for water.

Yep - lots of fish (I'd raid the freezer at home) and venison (I learned the beauty of cajun seasoning then) and ol' swill.... Hmmmm...This brings back memories.... mac and cheese, raman noodles for sure. Grilled cheese sandwiches made with the day old bread and government cheese. I could go days on peanut butter toast. crappy generic tuna fish, too. I definately got creative with the t-fish..... tuna toast, tuna melts, tuna w/ mac and cheese...hahahaha

Ramen, cheap hot dogs (which I can't eat anymore just because I ate so many), Totino's pizzas, PBJ sandwiches, instant potatoes, mac n cheese, fish, and my favorite, leftovers from visits back home. And of course, lots of Mich Light.

I'm starting my 5th year in a couple weeks, so I may find more things soon. I got so sick of eating crappy food that last year I stopped caring about spending money on food. I'm not buying filet mignon every night, but I'm not eating a lot of the dump I used to. My recent favorite is tuna helper with a can of salmon instead of tuna. Its way better.

I lived off of pizzas, fast food, venison, mac & cheese, busch light, and leftovers my first couple years. Then I got a job at a Green Mill and pretty much lived off of their menu as employees got a great discount.

Being a UMD alum, I survived on a healthy diet of milwaukee's best light, grouse, lakers. loopers, hamburger helper, hot dogs, party pizza's, and whatever was on the dollar menu at Wendy's.

High Life, Venison, Hamburger Helper, Fish, and working in restaurants. I also tried the girlfriend thing, but they had no idea what they were doing so I would always end up cooking for 2............that stopped real quick! grin.gif

Always look for those happy hours that include free or dirt cheap happy hours. Also, if you hunt then buy a crock pot and rice. It's amazing some of the things I made in a crock pot. Some turned out, some didn't.

Don't forget free tacos at the Reef Bar during the Vikings games, and $4 Johnny Ray's Pizza on Mondays! Maybe those are long gone...just like the House of Donuts...geez I'm getting old.

Same stuff - cheap pot pies, frozen pizza, mac and cheese and when the end of the week came, sometimes mustard sandwiches..... frown.gif

There was a beer joint in Stillwater, Okla that had happy hour from 8am to 10 am with 50 cent drafts and free popcorn.... missed a few early classes from time to time...

House of Donuts gone? Huh? I guess it has been awhile since I even thought that place. Their sandwiches were to die for. My day is ruined... The Chineese Lantern also had free appetizers fo awhile on Fridays during Happy hour.

Sohaad,

The reef and HOD totally slipped my mind, probably because of the level of intoxication when I was there! We also used to go to CW Chips cause a buddy bartended there. A friend used to deliver for Jonny Rays so we used that hook up too. How bout the Spur station in Superior, deep fried junk food heaven at 2am!

Yep, I had a buddy who worked at Old Chicago when it first opened. Six months later and I made the "Wall of Foam". The challenge came five years later, trying to explain to my nephews why my name was up on the wall at a bar. I also frequented the HOD house so regularly that the owner (Ray) and his wife would trade me softshells for behind-the-counter cleaning when it got busy!

2:10 a.m. at Spur... "Um yesh, I'yd liyke th' potata wedgez, pleash. grin.gif

I was up there from 92-97. Yeah, don't do the math. I know...

I went to school in Ashland, did any of the UMD alum ever make it over to Iron River, WI on Fri. nights for the Veefer fish fry? $5 or $6 for all you could eat, and the local townspeople would bring in sides, breads, deserts, and drink. Phenomenal.

We'd skip lunch to save some $, pile as many into a truck to save gas, fish on the way, and eat as much as we could as soon as it opened.

Joel

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
