Am I out of touch with modern fishing, or am I right that.....

Man I would die for a rig like you described. I am no pro fisherman, but I think it would still be sweet to drive that boat at least once. Overkill, maybe, but why not do it if you can afford it. Who cares if he can catch fish or not, maybe the guy just loves his boat and loves to fish. I would bet he is a decent guy like a lot of us here. I always said that when I get my new boat I am going to put the biggest motor it can handle so that I can never say "man it would be nice to have just a little more power". I am sure that is what he did as well.

I really don't know what's wrong with a guy buying a $50-60,000 boat. If they want to write a check or finance it, it's their choice. People have passions and hobbies and if they choose to want the very best or a very nice fishing boat - what's wrong with that? The boat and motor manufactures are doing their job and staying afloat by getting us to dream big and making it the fisherman's mind-set that these tools will help him become a better fisherman.

Also, there's obviously nothing wrong in fishing with what you have or need, as long as it (safely) gets you on the water. Most of us are somewhere in the middle . . .

I dont see a problem with it, the guy was respecting everyone, came in slow and fished. Now if he would have flew in at 70 mph or if he was just flying around this small lake and not respecting anyone. That would be the issue I would have. I could care less if this guy had to much money and spent $100k on a boat, or if he put a second mortgage on his house to impress his friends. As long as he was respecting me, I wouldnt have any lack of respect for him.

Needed nope, but if I had the ching to blow on it, I would!

Funny you should bring this up. I had a similar mystifying experience a couple of weeks ago. It was odd that it had multiple different size gas engines and a trolling motor.

I didn't even bring up the boat I seen later in the day. It was an older plain old Alumacraft 16' fishing boat with a 35hp main motor, 8hp kicker, and some type of giant electric trolling motor...all on the transom. True redneck boat. That boat had so much bow lift, it had to be down right scarry to drive against the wind.

I've done this. My late father's S16 Lund (not a bow mount style boat) was rigged with a kicker motor mount bracket. He liked the idea of a spare when down-rigging on Lake Superior.

A few years ago I coughed out some cash for a cabin on Birch Lake near Ely. I used the S16 with a 25HP, 6HP kicker, and my trolling motor, all on the back. My brother had told me the 25 hp wasn't running well. I wasn't going to waste all that cash with engine trouble for three days, nor get stuck on the far side of that big lake with a family of five. The trolling motor came in handy when we switched to fishing crappies in the shallows...Sure, it was a little crowded back there.

A guy with 10 motors on his boat, might be the greatest guy in the world...and that's all that really matters. wink.gif

the legal speed limit is "responsible and prudent" unless marked with buoys or at the landing. which i believe means, no racing, no excessive speeds, and basically....just be respectful and responsible.

I believe most tournaments have a speed restriction of 50 mph.

Just read up on boat reg.'s on DNR website and found nothing about speed limit on boats or personal water craft.

I could of missed somthing, but I went over it twice.

I agree about the "to each his own" idea. I think it's great if somebody wants to put a hodgepodge of engines and motors on their boat. The important thing is that it pleases the owner. I never make any negative judgements about the efficacy of such a solution or the desirability of the solution. But I still reserve the right to think some things are a little weird.

Hey. It's still funnie.

Do you think he has a F-350 super Duty just to get it in and out of the water?

No, I'm all for big boat like that. You never know when you may have a camera and soundman in your boat. That would never work in a 16 footer. By the way I've been in a 16' boat many time on lake Michign. Perfect size to fit between the big rollers.

He has money and he's loose with it. If your nice to him some might come your way. So lets all stand up and give a cheer to the Kings new clothes.

And 2 years ago on Lake Michigan during the Door County tourney two sixteen foot boats were pulled swamped into the marina. I know as I saw them being towed.

I like life, its a great thing. smile.gif

Definitely "to each their own". My eyes would open a little wider seeing that kind of rig, but if that's what he needs or wants for the fishing he does, then so be it.

For me, the ideal setup is a decent sized main motor, a kicker motor in the 8 - 9.9hp range and a bow mount up front. I've got 2 of the three, just need to find a day when I have money for the kicker.

Now, there is one thing that I think appears to be overkill and that's the guys that have 3 or 4 of those 10" sonar/gps/mapping units mounted all over their boats along with a couple handhelds propped up somewheres. To me, that's overkill, but again, to each their own. Plenty of "TV" to watch in them boats. grin.gif

My question is how do these guys generate the cash to dump into their "passions"? Do they own a bunch run down apartments where the less fortunate people are living like rats? Wretched excess is not excusable because "he likes it" when there is endless suffering going on in the world. You see an article about Lebron James's new bedroom having more square footage than any HOUSE in town and you think if the draft is ever reinstated then he should be first in line. If everyone's passion was doing something decent for others we all might get to enjoy a little fishing. There is probably nothing more harmful than greed and it affects each of us.

Wow. I'm definitly one of those guys who gets a chuckle out of these "overkill" boats catching the same fish next to me in my 14 footer. However, to spout off that having an expensive boat means that you're automatically some kind of daddy warbucks slumlord, twisting your mustache and laughing evily at the poor and unfortunate seems a bit over the top.

Maybe we'd all be better off and "more equal" if Big Brother issued all good comrades a Russian standard 16' Lundingrad boat with matching 25hp Marxury motor.

That didn't take long. I should know better than to make such sweeping statements. I just think it is a joke what some people feel they deserve when so many have nothing. I guess it is a good thing that the richest 1% enjoy 90% of the wealth.

I'll bet the guy had an anchor too.

I've run the gambit with my boats starting with a 19(something) 12 footer with a 5 hp Green Johnson Sea Horse. I now have a very nice rig to fish out of with all the attachments, including three motors. I know one thing for sure; when I'm at the hospice high on pain meds and waiting to meet the big guy, I'm not going the be laying there wishing I had fished less and worked more.

I think its funny how guys with small boats whine about guys with bigger boats. If you could afford a nicer boat, my bet is that you would have one. I would rather be caught in wind in a 621 Ranger over a 14' dingy. But then again, anyone who has a more expensive boat than you can't catch fish either. Some of you guys are just wish you could have a nicer boat, but since you can't, no one else can either. smirk.gif

Political statement? grin.gif

Political statements... jealousy... comments about those of us who have smaller boats... blah, blah, blah.

I see it this way. I've got a 16' boat that I am almost done remodeling. New floor, carpet, etc. Why? Because I wanted to, and I like the boat I have. It fits my needs, both for fishing & pleasure rides with my family.

Do I wish I could afford something newer, bigger, faster, maybe a little fancier? Sure. Why not? Isn't that part of being alive? Always striving for "more"?

If your "more" is giving your money to those less fortunate, so be it. If yours is a new boat with everything that you could possibly want and/or need, and maybe a little extra, cool with me. Just don't mind me if I stare a little and have a look on my face like I'd love to take a boat like that for a ride some day.

I do need to vent a little here, though... I've been on FM for a few years now, and posts like this are really taking a lot of the fun away from this HSOforum lately. There's way too much rush to judgment in situations that the "judge" doesn't even know. This used to be an extremely friendly, open-minded group of people who were more interested in what's working to catch fish, where they're biting, and sometimes getting together than it has become. It's disappointing, and to be honest, I'm finding myself not checking things out as often as I used to. We need to lighten it back up a bit and remember the old motto... "WE HAVE MORE FUN"... not "Get hacked for whatever you say"

In the end, I say if you can afford to get the best, do so. If not, get the best that you can afford and work your butt off to be able to afford better if you so choose.

Just my $.02

I wonder how many of you that think this guy had to much into his goat own more than one rifle and one shotgun? Different toys for different situations.

Like Limitout said, if you can do it, do it. I'll throw in just because a guy can spends more than you it dosen't mean you have to hate him. He more than likely has a fair amount of higher education and has probably worked very had and made sacrifices in his life to get where he is.

Some people choose to make $30,000 a year and live in the outstate area and some choose to make $300,000 a year and live in the city. Neither one is any better than the other, only one more than likely has more toys and the other more than likely has more acres.
