Especially on Red or Mille Lacs once your 2 or 4 Fish have been consumed some will just start on another limit!

And you don't think they do that already??

I am all for it, the bad have always done it and always will. It's about time the rest of us who follow the rules get a break and are allowed to have a meal while on the ice.

With today's modern shacks entire vacations are spent on the ice, days maybe a week at a time. Not being able to have the days catch as a meal was a ridiculous law. The abusers don't care if there is a law or not.

i didn't feel it was that big of a deal to license my portable for $12 a year...figured it went back into the DNR anyways.....but now they will lose 100K off an already tight budget.......then the license thing is just dumb...it is good for 1 years time.....I guess people should buy there license in March and then they will get there 12 months just like I do.. tongue.gif If they really want to make it easier for people to remember when to buy a license then have the renewal dates start on 1/1 or leave it the way it is!!!

I didn't really mind having to buy a shelter liscense. I figure if you can afford the shelter, auger, rods , reels, tackle, bait, heater, and whatever other luxuries you bring with you then you can afford the $12/year.

All this does is take money away from the DNR, that extra money along with the raises in non-resident liscenses could hire a few more DNR officers to enforce the laws and take down more good for nothing low-life poachers.

if your that rich make a donation to the DNR every year! i can't believe they finally did this, AMEN Brother-it was the biggest rip-off stupid law in fishing. grin.gif The extension of licenses is also a wonderful idea, i don't know how many times i have accidentally went out with an expired license in March.

THAT RICH? How much do you spend in bait on one trip? On food/drink for one trip? $12 for 4+ months was a deal to me, I guess. C'mon. And yes, I do make a donation to the DNR (Loon plate) and still have no problem with a portable shelter tag. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I hope they jack up another in-state rate to compensate, and not just hit up the out-of-staters alone.

12$ would buy me a new tip up or enough jigs to last me a winter, and it is more the premise than the money. a fee (tax) to put my shelter on a public lake for a few hours, or even worse a lake i may own, obserd. That is why we were the only state to do it. And why not hit the out of state people, do they pay taxes in Minnesota? last time i checked they didn't, an increase fee to use our public funded facilities seems very fair, if they don't like it thay can stay in Iowa and save a few bullheads for me. grin.gif

I was just giving you the needle.

I disagree; however, that the burden of replacing the lost revenue should be passed on to out of staters. I have friends who come to MN every year for both deer hunting and ice fishing and these boys spend a lot of money when they come. They eat in local bars and restaurants, buy bait and hunting supplies at local stores and bait shops, they even use a MN butcher and taxidermist. On top of that they are spending twice as much as me on a fishing lic and about five times as much on a hunting lic… I fail to see why they should be paying even more.

I am just glad I dont need to put them on my house anymore, I still have the one from last season in my billfold, and this years confused.gif. Could they make them things any cheesier? The $12 didnt bother me much, just the fact that I needed to babysit the sticker to make sure it didnt fall off yet!

Bummer deal we had to buy the 2007 license to fish this last March! mad.gif

I too am torn about the whole idea of doing away with the shelter license fee. When I read that they are doing without the license for those truely using "portable houses", to off set the lose of money they raised the out of state fees. However they are short plenty of money.

I shouldn't complain since the law is saving you and me $12.00. But when the DNR starts getting less revenue and you hear about water quality issues, overharvest concerns, etc. When their dollars get pinched, we (Outdoorsman's)could suffer the consquences.

Captain

I too, worry that the drop in revenue could possibly hurt other programs. But, one can still buy the tag if they so choose. It doesnt bother me if they charge the non-residents a little more as that is what I have been doing for the last 10 years in other states.

It doesnt matter where I go fishing or hunting in other states, the rules have changed and the non-resident pays more. One can look at Montana and see what a resident and non-resident is paying for a Elk license. Hundreds of dollars in difference for fees.

When I hunt in North Dakota for deer, I pay 220 for a tag and I believe the residents are at 22. I know one doesnt want to much of this going on but the other states started this game and we in Minnesota might as well reap some benifit once in awhile.

why not do both? raise the outta staters rates and keep the portable fee? it's still cheaper than a boat liscense isn't it? i am a born and raised iowan. when i moved to mn and had to pay $30 for a liscense, i was like sure. when i became a minnesotan and had to pay $80 for an iowa hunting license i was like 'whoa'. but was i gonna not shoot pheasants, i don't think so. i'm sure you could go with $45-$50 for a year round out of state license. i know i would pay it. after all, minnesota is still regaurded as one of the best fishing states in the country. trust me as an out of stater when i say i'll pay what i have to to. cool.gif

Being that a portables only purpose is to keep the wind/elements off you and keep you warm, where do I buy a license for my boots, glove, bibs, and hat?

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
