Got SICK from watching hunting shows

Sorry but I need to vent mad.gif First, it was T/Cs Game Trails where Waddell, Shockey, Wiesuhn, and Ritz are talkin up muzzleloader hunting - its like archery with a gun, man you have to get so close...inside the animals comfort zone...bla,bla,bla. Then of course they're all shooting ProHunters with the Nikon Omega(I think) which in their commercials they have a reticle for 225 yards....Hmmmm.

Next, and not so bad was Ron Spoomer talking how blaze orange doesn't do squat in big game hunting, only pheasant hunting and such - I'd like to see him hunt public land in WI or MN without blaze on and see how long he lasts.

And I won't even get into setup kill shots or misses or bad shots turned into easy recoveries or not showing the shot or...you get the picture.

Plus you read these guys articles about say how late season hunting can be so great, well ya if you have 1500acres full of unpicked corn and beans that hardly ever gets hunted.

OK, I'm sorry, but I do feel a bit better ooo.gif

When all the hunting shows on the Outdoor Channel came out I thought it was great, now I think about half of the shows do the sport more harm than good. Later.

yeah id like to see them hunt on public grounds instead of richy rich hunting lodges/resorts/game farms and all the like all the time. whats up with all the hunting in Africa too. i mean its cool to watch a show here and there about it, but come on, how many people will actually get to have an experience like that. show us a show that the average joe can relate too. I also hate it when they dont show the shot or the blood trail, thats what its about aint it?

Could not agree more. Its amazing how many lousy shots you see taken in broad daylight then on the next frame they cut to the dead animal and its pitch dark. I can only imagine how many people it took to find the deer in a several hour period.

I did see something cool tonite on Babe's show: a guy took a 30 yard bow shot at a nice buck and missed high. In slow motion they showed the buck flinching down at the release of the arrow. Then they showed a graphic that said the deer dropped 14 inches in .3 seconds causing the arrow to go just above the deers shoulder area.

Another pet peeve is that Bill Dance fishing show. Almost every show is filmed on the same 5 acre private pond! I expect some of those 2 pound bass he catches have been filmed more times than Paris Hilton.

It can be annoying. As a "hunting show junky" its plain to see that these shows are not normal hunting. But I know that, but i still watch. The one that gets me iratated is "Hunting With The J,,,,,," I Have seen them shoot whitetails with numbered yellow tags on the ears. Then in the "at the kill" scene the tag is gone. Who do they think there kidding.

Funny I just got done watching Babes show too. That miss in slow mo was cool. Babe I think puts on a good show. Majority of those shows are a joke. I think "Getting Close with Lee and Tiffany" is very good. Husband and wife team of two former Minnesotans. "Drury Outdoors" is good too. I always like how some of these bozo's act like the big white hunters and are sitting in a warm covered stand on a ranch and shot at a buck with 20 deer in the field. We could all shoot bucks like some of those too if we opened our check books.

anybody ever see BJ outdoors?its usually on fsn on sat and sun mornings that show is a joke! its basicly 30 min of advertisements, and they play that damm boomer lawn tractor comercial every other one, i like john gilispies show, even though he gets kinda annoying yelling all the time, at least he's usually fishing in wis/minn

Did you ever notice 90% of the Texas hunts are from a blind over looking a feeding station. They usually don't show the feeder or food but why else would 5-10 deer show up at the blind pawing and nibbling on bare ground!

funniest show I ever seen was a bunch of guys I think Muley hunt or prong horn. They were showing how they were sneaking around the hil side and the came to one spot and crawled up and on top of the hill to get the shot. Got the shot ready and it was a 200+ yd shot they said then boom it tips over. The camera guy zooms out and shows the guys celebrating and boom there is the pickup in the back ground 50-100 yds away with the doors all open. Kinda funny I thought. In Detroit Lakes they have the TV3 Local station and there is a fishing guy. I know this is a hunting link but he went to "release" the walleye and he winks and goes you got that and the camera guy goes yup and picks the walleye out of the water and puts in the live well. Well this show is a tape and it showed probable 6-8 times a day and well monday morning it was changed. guess too many people were [PoorWordUsage]ed and he deleted the scene of him winking at the camera guy. He mad an apology on the next show. kinda lost creditability from him after that. THey hunt these exclusive ranches and I want to go west to elk hunt and 3-5 grand per person to hunt out there at some of these places I'm just like WOW.

I dont watch them anymore as they are so many times in a fence. Many other times people watch for the deers exact location and then they call the hunters and camera crew in for the BIG hunt. If we all could always hunt the locations they do,our bucks would also be much bigger. I have hunted the Milk River area in Montana where they shoot alot of thier shows. Wouldnt you like it if the rancher called you and said lets go hunting thereis a big buck that I have watched on this trail all summer.

We have very good deer hunting where I hunt in North Dakota. I would like them to come up for a weeks stay and go hunting and then lets see what they get. No fence, no one watching and scouting for them all summer and they have to come out and do all the work. I would bet the farm the big buck shows would slip a little. Its enterainment.

I get a kick out of those Muzzleloading shows. They talk about the challenge of blackpowder and then use the latest technology available in in line muzzleloading. Jim Shockey(sp?) once stated that the lead roundball is an ineffective game getter. I have shot 5 deer with a traditional Kentucky Rifle shooting real BP and a patched ball and the farthest one ran was 10 yards. Also, I don't seem to relate to any of the hunting shows. No shows on hunting Ruffs in Northern Minnesota. It's all about the big racked deer.

I know what everybody is talking about. The shows like that are the downfall of our good old huntting. They do a lot of shows in the Milk River area, and it is big money for the Ranchers. Cabelas leases a lot of land by Plentywood MT, and when everybody chases the big Deer into the Ranch, they start there films and there big time money hunts. Makes me sick to see the canned hunts as you say. Hope they stop it. CAJ

Ok all you guys are talking about big game hunting but what about bird hunting duck and geese hunting. Any thing worng or fake about that. I am not sure. But you guys are right about the hunting movies and TV shows. The hunters have every advandge to them as they can. They have the best land the best gun best of everyting. Us middle class folks don't have that kind of money to be dishing out for hunting land and ect. My friend Matt get really mad when he watches those shows. But I keep telling him that they have the best of everything. You almost can't help that. Now I am vented lol

Myself, I very seldom watch them. About the only time is when I go over to a friends house who I think watches only two shows.

1. Anything hunting/fishing

2. Battlestar Galactica (or something like that).

To me, watching one of these shows is sorta like going to a "gentlemen's club". Just gets you all worked up and then you have to come back to reality. wink.gif

I love waterfowling, but many of these shows show nothing but kill shots from ground blinds at 50 yards with yelling and high fives of course. BORING... Yeah, I like those moments alot when I'm out there, but any waterfowler worth his salt know the REAL fun is in the scouting, decoys, calling, and joking with your buddies, not the pile of canadas and handshakes/backslaps. I just wish more shows would include that so the newbies would get a more informed view.

Honestly I think the only show I watch and really enjoy is Ron Schara's. If they catch fish or get game that's great otherwise it's not a big deal, they just want to display an adventure.

Any other TV show is just an advertisement 60 minutes long.

I do like the Drury outdoors though. I like how they try teaching ya how to do the food plots and kinda what to look for. I do enjoy watching that show. Sure they are selling the biologica and that fun stuff but I do enjoy that and when they have those groups hunting around the country.

I actually watched a film crew and some "pros" up on LOW one time fishing for big northers. Funniest thing I ever saw! A bunch of guys (must be the lower end and in shape staff) would chase flags and catch the fish. Then the pros move in, they rehooked the fish, and then let it back down the hole. They put their underwater camera down and then the pro re-caught the fish. Makes a guy wonder how many of these shows are actual fishing and hunting. I guess I will still watch though smile.gif!

Personally I think some of this big buck, QDM, mentality is comming from these shows. Guys see good ol' Bill Jordan shoot a huge bucks all over and wonder why they don't. Little do most guys realize is that, as some have said here, these guys are tipped off to these huge bucks. The outfitters want to get their names out there and they do it by having a big name "outdoorsman" shoot a big buck or catch a big fish on tape. It's not too tough to get a few big bucks when you hunt from August through December in 10 different states/provinces and are told exactly where the deer are.

That being said I do like watching the shows and DVDs from time to time but it's not much more than entertainment value. Like Whoaru99 said after watching those you have to come back to reality.

Cooter,

Sorry you feel the way you do. I do agree some of the shows are hard to watch. I just deal with it. I have 65 cable channels to watch and out of the 65 channels 50% are political, 20% are religious and 10% are infirmecals. No wonder my wife complaines all the time. If it's not sports it's the outdoor channels. They get me pumped up. If I don't like what I see I simply change the channel. I do like the whitetail hunting up in Canada though. Man them buck get huge. Just makes me want to sit longer because maybe someday the beast will walk by me. I don't know what show I was watching but there was this young kid bow hunting and filming his own hunt. Probably one of the best I'd seen. He ended up shotting a huge buck and as he was giving his point of view of the hunt another huge buck walks into the picture and wants to pick a fight with the deer he has down. This buck is all wired, hair standing high on it's back and ears armed for a battle. All of a sudden this buck just starts attacking this dead deer. The kid finally realizes his nice buck he has on the ground is getting mauled by this other deer. It's funny he takes off running after this deer with the camera on trying to get it away from his. You had to have seen it. It was the talk of the water cooler the next day at work. Just my two cents worth. Then again up North we are lucky we get cable TV.

I can agree that Tred certainly has the opinion of many and his shows do show the struggles that us average hunters encounter. I have always liked Eastmans - they are all fair chase and they really seem to stress that on their show. However, they do seem to cath an unreal number of brutes on camera - likely because they and all their scouters have found the animals first. It would be very interesting to see a show where these 'professionals' compete in a real life hunt outside the fences where they have to use their experience alone to find the best buck they could on property typically hunted by us average guys. The thing that also gets me on the outdoor channels is the other shows that have nothing to do with hunting or fishing.
