Mistake fish

How many times have you gone fishing for a specific species of fish and caught something totally diferent? I was bass fishing Saturday in the early AM wind and rain. I was throwing a swim jig into the sticks for bass and had a very good strike. I swung the boat out to get away from the shore, and the fight was on. After a battle I got the fish up where I could see what it was, a 28" walleye! Didn't have a camera, so I made a quick measument and released it. I did catch a couple of real nice bass later in the morning.

I have caught a few pretty nice muskies crappie fishing also.

I know what you mean. I caught a 20 plus pound pike this summer bass fishing. Pretty cool. You got me beat. I havent caught a 28" walleye yet, whether walleye fishing or not. Nice catch. Cool that you released it. I released my pike too. No picture, no official measurement, but I did have three witnesses. You really dont need fish on the wall. But, at the same time, I am willing to learn Catching that walleye like you did proves they are shallower than you think, even at this time of year.

2 years ago on LOTW I was muskie fishing and decided to try something totally different to try to turn one on. Threw a big (4 inch or so) swim bait out and on about the 3rd cast got bit...31 inch walleye! (released)

I got a 39-inch muskie while throwing a buzzbait for bass a couple years ago. Man was that a fight! That fish tail-danced a few times across the surface of the water and really tested my drag

I was fly fishing the Rush River over in Wisconsin two summers ago and caught and released a 28" walleye.

Last winter while targeting walleyes I caught a mud puppy. I had never seen such a thing before and as it turned out it was the first recorded sighting in the lake I was on according to the DNR.

It isn't uncommon to catch bowfin (dogfish) on Osakis while walleye fishing either. I've had times when I was forced to move because of this.

I can't tell you how many crappies and sunfish I caught on a 6" clouser minnow fly I tied on a size 2 wide gap hook while fishing for pike and walleyes. I don't know how they even got hooked since the hook gap was bigger than their mouths....

Plastic wormin' for bucketmouths. Hopped the worm down the breakline and retrieved it for a few feet at the base of the break. No takers, so started reeling in very fast for the next cast. Worm now rocketing through the water, some distance off the bottom in 18FOW. Got HAMMERED part way back to the boat. 6lb walleye. Released.

I was fishing with 2 friends for suspended crappies at about 15 feet and we were doing quite well. All of a sudden one of them caught an 11 pound Northern on a crappie minnow using 4lb. test on an ultra light setup.

Another couple I have experienced are big bullheads on bucktails while muskie fishing. Last summer my buddy and I landed a 45 pound flathead on the Croix while trolling cranks for walleye.

B@ssmaster, I have caught almost every fish known to man with a texas rig plastic worm, including, pike, musky, bluegill, crappie, flathead/channel cats, and on and on, but I have never caught a walleye texas rigging. I believe I have had several strikes from them, but could never hook up. I always thought it was the hook size, 2/0 or 3/0, but then again, what about the crappie and the bluegills. Were you texas rigging when you caught that and if so, what size of hook. Just curious.

How about catching a Sheephead while fishing for flatheads...I was using a 7in bullhead for bait!!!!

Hey Rushing, a couple weeks ago, while night fishing on the Red for Channels, my son baited with a whole Goldeye on an 8/0 circle hook and went to sleep in the boat. When he woke up, the bait was gone and he had about a 15 inch Quillback on his hook. How that fish got its tiny mouth hooked on an 8/0 circle is a real mystery. Something else must have chewed off almost all the bait from the hook first, because the Goldeye was about half the size of the Quillback.

Yep, Texas rigging. Have had similar experiences with many fish types. Being bit off by pike is a constant annoyance, catching the odd bluegill or crappie happens. But the walleye was a surprise. Usually I am throwing Tru-Turn 3/0 or 4/0, depending on worm size that day. Been a while, don't recall which one for this particular fish, but I am sure it was one of those two.
