Ice Fishing Pet Peeve's

Alright, we had quite a lenghty list for boat landing pet peeve's, so let's start one for ice fishing.

I think it's ok for a guy to come in and open my permanent door after knocking to see how we're doing. DO NOT stand there for 2-3 minutes with the door open. It takes long enough to get the house warmed up without bringing it back down to 15 degrees in the house.

people who think they know everything about the lake, and then forgot to check how thick the ice was (kinda an isolated incident)

garbage, people acting like they own the lake, and how no matter how often you move the house people will always follow you thinking that you are on fish, but when i'm not i just laugh at them for wasting there time. grin.gif

Guys on Mille Lacs who drive around with their fancy pull-behind fish houses and circle my house. I'm right on top of that waypoint buddy--if you want to be sure, get out and walk over with your GPS. Don't do circles around me and scare every fish off the hump!

Ill agree with the territorial jerks.... ive almost been in a fights before because some some guy thinks he owns the entire lake and i have no right to be anywhere within 500 yards of him...... even if hes sitting on the most popular walleye hole in the entire lake.

Oh and selfish snowmobilers too. I know theres a lot of good ones out there, but theres some jerks out there too. I almost impaled one in the head with my auger once cause apparently i drove my jeep over his nice snowmobile trail (even though it was a public road) and he thought he could get away with yelling at me like i was some kind of 3rd grader.... which he didn't.... its amazing how some guys turn into complete cowards when someone actually steps up to them.

I try to be respectful to others on the lakes..... but some people are just ridiculous. well thats the end of my rant.

Unwanted Eelpout that have been discarded onto the ice and left to rot. This disgusts the heck out of me. mad.gif

They may stink, may be slimy, may be " annoying to catch" for some people, but one should have just as much respect for that ugly creature as any other fish that is not going to be harvested. Besides, they taste so darn delicious, who would want to waste them? And dont tell me the Eagles and Crows need to eat, they have plenty of roadkill deer to knaw on. Let 'em go so they can grow, then I can catch him. laugh.gif

My biggest pet peeves:

#1. Catching eel pouts.

#2. Catching eel pouts.

#3. catching eel pouts.

grin.gifgrin.gif Really though, I think my biggest peeve would have to be snowmobiles flying around your shack really fast and close. I understand that it is a lake or river, and everyone has the right to use it, heck I even like riding sleds fast, but around ice fisherman is not the place. crazy.gif

Being that this will be my first real year of Ice Fishing a thread like this makes me concerned. I know what the rules are.

One point of view

Seeker of Clayface said "Territorial jerks"

Wyochris said "Ill agree with the territorial jerks.... ive almost been in a fights before because some some guy thinks he owns the entire lake and i have no right to be anywhere within 500 yards of him...... even if hes sitting on the most popular walleye hole in the entire lake."

Another point of View

Shamalex72 said "Guys that set up too close to you"

Pathogen said "encroachment"

Icecold said "People that are on there cell phones as soon as they or someone gets a fish and within 15 minutes there is another 10 people by your spot, its just down right crazy"

Cliff Wagenbach said "People that set up their shacks as close as they can legally get to my house!

The only good thing about that is that I at least have a good place to get out of the wind to pee!"

(Which I thought was really funny)

So I ask how close is to close? I don't want to have troubles my first year out with my own gear and or have to carry just because some jerk doesn't like how close you are to him.

If the guy starts yelling at you, your probably too close. grin.gif I think it depends. If there is already tons of houses all over the area, you can set up fairly close and not have much trouble, but if the person is all by themselves in the middle of nowhere and you come pretty close, then they might get mad at you. I think if you just stay back as far as you think is right, you should be fine. If you feel like you might be crowding them, then you're probably too close.

Sorry Pout-Pounder, I did'nt mean to offend you. grin.gif

Man, I just cannot touch a pout! I don't know what it is, but they give me the heevie-jeevies. I can touch snakes, spiders, bugs, Catfish, But not pout, now way, no how.

but remember, even though I don't like them, they still go back to swim another day. wink.gif

So lets say you are sitting on my favorite reef edge and you are the only one there. Being that 10ft is the rule and I set up lets say 30 ft down the reef line from you.

Would that be an issue for those of you that don't like crowding or encrouchment?

I have read over these posts a few times. I will definately reiterate the disgust for garbage, especially cigarette butts.

The question of "How close is too close?" is one that is tough to give one good answer to. For me it would depend on what type of etiquette the fishermen used. We are all out there to have a good time and catch fish. The lake is available to everyone. I personally wouldn't be offended by some one who is genuinely out there to fish with a respect for the resource setting up relatively close to me.
