It didn't seem to from what I can tell. Half the time I see them they are already on the feeder, the other half they come in from a tree real close to the feeders.

Not sure about anyone else but the birds are pretty scarce around here 

 

Even when I was up at the cabin there weren't as many around as when I was up deer hunting.

ot cleaning off the driveway this morning there where 2 morning doves on the neighbors TV antenna!!!!!

We have about a dozen that hang around our neighborhood. Seems like each year that number increases. Seems like open water and feed keep them around here.

i always get them mixed up, but i believe there a pine grosbeak. there is another bird looks just like them but yellow, there the evening grosbeak...i think. they typically come down from canada to northern minnesota when the weather gets tough and less food, as i understand them.

 

we get them at the cabin in the winter time if we can keep the feeders full on a consisient basis!!!!

Smurfy was right they are pine grosbeaks.

 

Here is a photo of an evening grosbeak. In the summer we also get rose breasted grosbeaks.

So your saying the circled birds aren't mostly Red with black and white wings?

well a pine grosbeak is red. Your coming along nicely. an evening grosbeak will be yellow.

Anyone put out Nyjer thistle?  I never see anything eating mine hardly at all and I'm about to try something else on that hook.  Other then I have a big bag of it!

hey leech, Mr. national geoghraphic here, , yes i do but it doesnt get hit much in the winter months. for the most part the Nyjer seed is well liked by the yellow finches that are around during the summer months. i dont recall to many other type of birds on the njyger seed feeder.

 It has a new official name of Canada Jay. It was called a Gray Jay. Also known as camp robber.

I have a few cardinals and blue jays, that’s about it. Oops, nuthatches too.

Might be a stupid question but do the birds travel in packs from feeder to feeder? I’ll have nothing and then look outside and there will be 30 birds out there and after a few minutes they are all gone again. Safety in numbers?

Same. Days with empty feeders then their getting mugged the next.
