What's the best tip?

many guys drill holes completely thru to check depth and for fish. If you can first ice without thick snow, I use a saline solution on the ice, scrape off just enough snow to get a good reading. If the ice is gray, with lots of air pockets drill only enough to get a good shot down.

I would say learning how to read and accurately use a lake map is key. You will not catch fish if you don't know where to go or where your at. A lake master chip and a basic flasher are at the top of the list for me.

Always have 2 lines out. 2 lines doubles your odds (I know 'duhh") what other piece of advice doubles your odds? And lots of people do not do it. Second line next to the first is ok but why not have one shallow and one deep? I even use tip ups for panfish, yep I know even if you do everything right it does not work that well but it can tip you off to an area that is good or turning on. Not convinced? Then please fish with me and I'll get 3 lines out!

I will agree on the move move move.. But since it was all ready said I will post something different that kind of goes along with it.

Don't get stuck on a spot or lure because it was hot before. I have fished with many guys who will always want to fish the same spot because years ago it was hot, Then don't want to move because if they are not biting in there secret spot they must not be biting anywhere.

Don't be afraid of trying new things! If you always fish points try fishing flats if you always use a wax worms try minnow heads. Minnows? Try plastics mix it up its fun

I WILL say it again! Move,Move,Move, and move some more. And odd as it sounds, if the bite is good - move. The best time to scout new spots is when you know they're biting. Use light line- 2-4lb and fish without a float. Learn to watch your tip if it's light enough. Use a spring bobber if not. Watch your line as well.

I don't think its the best advice, but the most common I see people do in MN is to drive right up to shanty town and drill 11' from someone's perm. The original MN fish locator. Lazy d bags.

Lol....yes, very solid advice, and can sometimes be effective smile If you want to step up your game though, would concur with Kyle and learn to utilize maps/technolgy.... and how to drill less wink

Stay warm and enjoy your time outside. Make sure you know the fishing regs. for the lake you're on. The D.N.R. has slots on some lakes to have larger northern pike. They have different regs. for different species.

Why does it need to be a saline solution? Just drill a hole and grab lake water?!! If you drill holes only half way down you are "one of those guys." Please just finish the hole so no one breaks a leg out there! My advice for you is to think of other fishermen that will come after you. Imagine how bad your ankle/leg would feel taking a tumble into a half finished hole. Put water on top or drill ALL the way through. Think of others that will come after you!

Drill your dang holes ALL THE WAY THROUGH no matter what!!!! This is the same selfish thinking that makes it easier on you but breaks a future fisherman of the same area's ankle!!! Think of other that will use the lake! Also why do you use a saline solution? Just use an empty "pop" can and take some lake water, much easier than remembering to bring your saline solution each time out!

Respect distance of others and if you pack it in, pack it out.

+1 A little common courtesy and a positive attitude can make even the slowest days into good memories of knowing that you have done and acted your best as a sportsman in the great outdoors. 2c

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
