Things you should teach your son

Recommended Posts

I was killing some time on the Internet waiting for a phone call when I came across an article on five things a father should teach his son, the guy didn't have a clue what he was talking about. So this is what I have so far, what do you think you should teach your son?

How to throw a tight spiral

How to throw a baseball

How to catch a baseball

How to drink water from a facet using only your hand

How to build a fire

How to change oil on a muddy truck

How to BBQ a steak

How to tie at least three different kinds of knots

Righty tighty lefty loosy

How to back up a trailer

How to say you are sorry

How to stick your fingers in your mouth and whistle

How to use a compass

How to pound a nail

How to say please and thank you

How to say no

And how to say Yes more then No

The list of course applies to girls to, they should know these things too

Nice start on a list, but I think you missed an obvious one for this HSOforum.

Honesty, integrity and just treating others like you would like to be treated.

The "GOLDEN RULE" applies here.

Girls don't need to know all those IMO. Got three girls myself and I figure I raise them to be good wives, and the rest of you raise your boys to be good husbands, we will all win.

That is a good list though, I like that. Fishing has got its own list all by itself. How to knot, bait, hook, hold the fish, just keeps going!

Some things I have tried to instill in my sons, in no particular order.

Knowing HOW to think is much more important than knowing what to think.

Healthy skepticism is a good thing.

History is full of examples of everyone being wrong.

An honest "I don't know" is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Mom and Dad are only usually right.

Don't listen to pastors or politicians without hip boots on.

You should go to great lengths to avoid a fight, but be prepared to win just in case.

Don't die for your beliefs, you could be wrong.

Value logic, reason and evidence. Shun dogma and those that spread it.

Enjoy life, be happy and help others do the same.

+1 for Peatmoss!

Good topic and suggestions by all.

What I think when I read this is that it is very important to be present for your sons/daughters. I have worked with some fathers who do excellent work/make lots of money but that is all they do. In my humble opinion, their kids are in need of lessons from dad.

There is certainly a standard of living that needs to be met which requires financial backing but going beyond that has its own costs.

No whining

If it's broke, fix it. If you can't find a part, make it. Find a way and get it done.

Sharpen your knife often.

Be nice

It may not be pretty but the running game sets up the passing game.

How to cook bacon over an open fire.

Work smart

You can learn a lot by listening. Not much is learned when you are talking.......Hmmmm maybe I need to listen to my own advice before giving it to others.

The importance of gun safety.

Killing an animal for harvest, never leaving them lay.

How to kill and clean a variety of animals/birds.

Teach them about ecosystems and the circles of life.

Selective harvest to sustain the ecosystems.

How to survive in extreme weather situations.

How to take care of themselves.

A hard work ethic and experience will get you a job faster than no work ethic no experience and a 4.0 gpa.

Be humble.

Ahh Grass Hopper... The drinking water truly means that you don't need to make things harder then they are. The muddy truck shows you that a little preparation (washing the truck) will save you time and dirty hands later. ( Bobby now takes large stick and bangs gong with it and bows in your direction ) Should be noted that it is a facet not a fountain that you are drinking from. ( bangs gong again)
