As long as I can remember the walleye/pike opener has been on mothers day weekend.

Actually the past couple years opener was the week after mothers day.

2011 - Opener - May 14

2011 - Mothers Day - May 8th

2010 - Opener - May 15th

2010 - Mothers Day - May 9th

2009 - Opener - May 9th

2009 - Mothers Day - May 10th

i tell my mother and my wife that it's mothers day everday to me and they know i mean it. a special card and flowers for the day, and if i go fishing a special day always is reserved for a good dinner. been that way for a long time. good luck.

My wife, and mother of our child, has never been into celebrating specific days. We don't get crazy about our anniversary either. We take Reinhard1's attitude of "it's not the day, it's the thought and your actions on all other days." Mother's Day is just to sell flowers, cards, and candy. I'm surprised that they haven't moved it to a different day to get more sales!

I think it would benefit the world if we all stopped putting so much emphasis on celebrating every little thing on specific days. What a waste of time, money, stressed-out brain cells.

So I'll be fishing opener this year.

I always take the kidlet with me, have since he was 2 months old. Mom gets to go out sat night with the girls, get up whenever she wants to on sun, goes out for a quiet breakfast, wanders around the stores for hours. I do make sure to get home early enough on sun though and make sure jr. has something special to give mom other than fish. It truly is a win win....well for her at least ...I really do not get to fish much wink

ive heard too many horror stories bout fishing openers with rude people and long lines. until i know more & fish better, im letting the rest to the openers or find quiters lakes to try out. i try to go fishing to have good times with my sons and avoid any kind of rat race scenario. ive heard opener is nuttin but a rat race with long dock lines, impatient fisherman, and generally uncooperative weather. enjoy the openers & good luck! smile

I am not big on going the opener, I have the option of going the following weekdays with considerable less traffic om the lake and at the landing.

As far as Mothers day and fishing, never been an issue yet when and if I do go. I typically go when I please and my wife goes and does what she wants when she wants to also. Seems to always work well that way.

My wife works a retail store that sells Minnesota License and she heard that the DNR might be trying to move the opener date so that it doesnt fall on mothers day weekend! grin But that is just a rumor right now!

Moving the opener was actually introduced as a bill in the MN Legislature a couple years ago. It proposed moving the opener one week later. When the resorts and bait shops heard about it the S#!T hit the fan and it didn't go anywhere and hasn't raised its head again.

I was always fortunate that my wife liked spending the day with the kids and didn't care if I was off fishing. My mom lived 1000 miles aways so I got off with a nice card and phone call.

My mom and wife both know where I will be every opener no matter if its mothers day or not. They both know of and appreciate my love of fishing. Neither would even think of not allowing me to enjoy the tradition that is the Mn. Fishing Opener.

They both get a kiss and a "Happy Mothers Day" from me and we do a dinner some place before or after. They have always been cool with this.
