eyeguy2, I appreciate your side, and I think you brought up some really good arguments to justify the DNR selling the antlers....I'm sorry, I forgot, what were they again? It's encouraging to hear that you would shoot a buck and sell the antlers for profit, versus hunting for the joy of being in the woods and watching the spenders of what you see while you are hunting, and passing that on to future generations. You're setting a great example, just like the DNR is! You or a poacher might put that money to some good use, like paying off your truck, which would be similar to what the DNR would do with the money. We're not critiquing the character of someone that would buy the antlers...just the character of someone that would sell them!

I voted No but after thinking a bit I can not come up with one good reason for it so I would have to say YES sell those antlers and use the money to fund agaisnt poaching or anything else that would take away the cost to the sportsmen.

I say this with the meaning that if they are to pay off a truck with the money thats great. Thats less dollars out of the sportsmens pocket to pay for that truck or any other sort of thing that is funded with the money from the sale.

Any way to lessen the money out of the sportsmen pocket the better but thats just my opinion.

Maybe the DNR should sell all of the seized stuff to fund their agency.

Like Archerysniper said:" Wait for it"

Wait for it.........

wait for what? everyone has an opinion, and I think those opinions can be and should be shared here as long as they are within forum rules. If it breaks down to name calling or two people just flat out arguing, then the lock comes out. As it stands right now, it is a healthy conversation.

Now, I didn't vote becuase I could absolutely care less about a set of antlers, our hunting culture now puts an extremely high dollar amount on a set of antlers. That is disturbing to me. We also seem to have a large sector here that feel the DNR has no idea what they are doing and the only reason they exist is to impede their hunting success, which by the way, is the only way to hunt and if you hunt a different way it is not the right way. Regardless of the fact that they are not an independent agency in MN, they have the rules created by our legislature and at times have their hands tied when it comes to some of the crazy legislation that is handed down to them. Want to complain about the laws the DNR enforces, contact your legislators.

I volunteered in the lake data booth in the DNR building at the state fair year before last. The rack was displayed there one day, early in the fair. The number one question I was asked while working was where is the rack, we want to see it. I had to tell many people that it was not there any more. I asked a conservation officer why it was not there the whole time, and he told me that it being worth possibly 200K+ made people very nervous about someone trying to steal it. Jeez, people will steal copper pipe out of houses so it's certainly not unrealistic that someone would try to steal something this valuable... For that reason it will not go on the wall of shame. They either have to lock it away or sell it... I understand their dilemma.

The antlers belong to us all!!!! Keep em. To "flynfhs", I thought your points were very valid. Don't apologize. Some on here don't like someone with only four posts having an opinion. I guess validity comes with 100's of posts.

By selling them, it would be sending the message that the sale of antlers for profit is ok and would only promote poaching(if the DNR can make a buck off of poached antlers, why shouldn't I be able too)!
Flynfhs - you make some good points. I don't agree with all of them but that's what these forums are for.

The logical error that I'd like to point out is in your quote above. Selling antlers for profit is completely legal. Poaching is illegal. You can try and draw a line between the two but the illegal act (poaching) is done. The next act isn't illegal by default. So the DNR selling antlers, a completely legal act, does not encourage poaching.

If anything this whole situation is education in itself. Free publicity. Potential poachers hear that they don't get to keep the trophy, might spend time in jail, likely will be fined, and the DNR will do "x" with the trophy. There...that didn't cost a dime

As far as poaching goes I think it's either in ya or it aint. I also feel there's 2 kinds of it, in season and out. The in-season folk feel slightly guilty as the season is open anyway. Someone mentioned stealing these antlers etc., well didn't that happen about a year ago ? Someone broke in and stole the display items in that trailer, they got caught of course. If we could punish crimes appropriately that would be nice meaning these bozo's with repeat, repeat, and repeated again offenses.

TruthWalleyes says "I think it is funny how the article tries to make this deer into something special, with the whole "Fred" story blah blah blah." Obviously, you, like most, have not seen the antlers in person yet, which is what the story is saying...the DNR isn't doing anything with them; by the way, it is massive, so yes, it would have a bigger impact on people's opinion about poaching than the other deer on the wall of shame.

Horn Porn... sick I'd have the same opinion of a poached doe as i would a poached world class buck. IMO it doesn't matter if it has a big rack or no rack, it shouldn't have been shot. Lets just be thankful the DNR can actually get some money for once from a private buyer, and not all of us paying citizens. Too much emphasis on antlers these days.

I maintain the same poor opinion for poachers whether it be:

Big walleyes or small walleyes,

Little deer or big deer,

Killing a baby or an adult...

I think their actions are all equally bad.

Saying it is worse to kill a "Massive" buck is furthe emphasizing "Big Racks" over antlerless. Poaching fine is the same whether it be a buck or doe...
