Waterfowl Reports

Recommended Posts

Hunted near the south metro over water. 2 geese and 2 doves down. Birds did not want to be on water and most avoided me spread for the fields. It was hilarious to watch my 40 pound Brittany retrieve geese. He can barely get them in his mouth but he finds a way to swim back with the bird.

Hunted some ambush spots Monday (no decoys - waiting near loafing spots or fly-ways)in the South Metro. Two of us got four geese and came really close to limiting out if a flock would have been 30 yards closer. They were flying only 25 feet off the ground. I got my two geese on a small marsh/bog.

Saw about 200+ mallards and Woodies. Pretty much had ducks on every water hole we ran into. 50-60 Mallards lit off of the one small hole where I got the two geese.

Can't wait for the duck opener!

I was out at my parent's house yesterday evening shooting my bow and the geese and ducks were thick! This is in Washington County, SE of Hugo. I wasn't too excited when I didn't see many last weekend out there, but it was crazy last night with geese circling all over the place, lots of mallards going in and out.

Geese are thick up in the Northern part of the state, fields were not hard to find. Had a good hunt this morning for two of us, cacklers/giants were eating up the spread and yesterday took the dog with and he is still learning but shot 6 though... I will post pics sometime through the season goes on.

good luck everyone!

On Sunday I saw a single snow with about 200 geese by my sister's place up there, Quack. She's 6 miles south of the Pool... you know the Pool... wink

After being up there this past weekend, I couldn't take it anymore. I bought some dekes and am headed back up next weekend to lay some wood. Geese everywhere around there.

Well, I shot my limit but not the type of ducks I wanted. There was about 100 teal on the slough I was hunting. They got up and I decided to shoot one just to get on the board. Shot once and five of them fell. 30 seconds or so later I shot a drake mallard. 2 shots and maybe 90 seconds into the season, I was picking up decoys watching tons of Mallards fly around.

Waited till well after shooting time to walk into a spot this morning; didn't want to go the 1/2 mile only to find somebody had come in from the other side...after seeing ducks work and not hearing any shots, figured it was empty...was treated to a flock of about 200 blue wing constantly buzzing the dekes every 10 minutes or so. They were flying too tight for me to take a clean shot...never saw another species of duck this morning. Sounded like WW3 started in eastern SD...I'd be surprised if Scheels has any steel shot left by tomorrow afternoon. Lots of guys picking up field spreads when I was driving back into town this morning.

Well, today was a big kick to the groin. Plenty of birds but my shooting was awful. I have had off days shooting before but nothing like this. Shot a box of shells and ended up with 2 teal and a woodie. Wiffed on quite a few mallards and woodies. When walking back to the truck a flock of woodies, flock of mallards, and a flock of 4 pintails landed exactly where my decoys were.

Friend and I were west of Delano and we did great. Lots of shooting, total misses. Had a great time out in the blind and we didn't have to clean a thing. All wood ducks. No teal at all despite there having been many on the lake a few days earlier. It pretty much shut down by 830 or so. How did anyone shoot ducks when the opener was a noon?
