braid line visible to bass ?

I have my jig rod spooled with 20 pound braid. I have had hardly any luck with a jig this year. I think I have caught one fish so far. Wondering if anybody thinks braid is the wrong way to go.Is it to visible for fish? I know you need it if your fishing slop but I have not been fishing stuff like that. Just normal vegetation. I was out with a buddy this weekend and I was throwing a jig for hours and he was throwing a texas rigged small beaver bait and cleaning up while I got nothing. Is this the line or do bass just prefer a smaller less menacing looking bait some times? I love braid because I don't worry about losing a lure and a birds nest seems easier to get out.

Confidence is a funny thing.. Unless you are fishing open water, in really clear water. I really dont think it makes that big a difference. Maybe in lakes that have really high fishing pressure. Think of local lakes that always seem to have tournaments on them.. Big Marine, Tonka, ect.. Then Maybe.. maybe.. but even still.. I am more worried about the fish feeling me with braid and having them let go, than I am with them seeing the line.

Yeah I am definetely losing confidence in my jigging at this point. I did puchase new jigs for someone online who makes them as opposed to store bought. But i don't see this beeing it. Might just start flipping small plastic texas rigs till I get my confidence back up.

Craigums is going to come on here and just tell us he is a better jig fisherman!.. LMAO!!!!

Dude, if you aint feeling the jig.. dont fish the jig!!! Fish a tube, fish a punch skirt.. fish a beaver, a hawg bait.. You will fish what you have confidence in much better than anything you dont.

I know that for a fact!

personally i think braid is just fine for jig fishing. I've done it the previous 3 years and had good results be it in slop or just around sandy docks, and that was with 50 lb power pro. This year i switched to p-line cx premium to see if my numbers went up to compare but its to early to tell. I think like stated before its all about confidence. Last saturday i was throwing a lure i had no confidence in and my father was cleaning up on a jig/pig. I got sick of it and switched to a trusty 10 inch worm and in a matter of minutes had 5 fish in the boat before he landed another. So sometimes i think it is the bass just being picky and other times it can be a lack of confidence, or possibly a bit of both.

I had 50lb braid on that reel I was using, I don't think that the line was the issue. I bet it had more to do with the weight of your jig. I was using a 1/4oz bullet weight with that beaver. While you had a 3/8oz maybe the fish just wanted a slower drop speed cause once you switched to a slow falling senko you were catching them left and right...So I think its either the profile, drop speed or the fact that I'm a better jig fisherman grin

Hiya -

I'm sure it's visible, but I also am pretty positive they have no idea what it is. Especially around any kind of cover at all, consider the background when they see your lure - there are lines all over the place. I fish some pretty clear water and use braid a lot. Never felt like it was costing me fish because of the visibility.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I used to use a floro leader, but I apparently can't tie a good uni knot as I broke them off at the uni a lot. So I stopped doing that and use a marker.

Take a black magic marker and cut a slit in it. Run that 12-18" from the lure on up on the line. I call it the poor man's leader:)

Bass are dumb I doubt they care about what line you use.
there are some dumb people out in the world too. Might have met a fish or two that are smarter than some people.

I've contemplated this myself and haven't seen that much of a difference. To me fluoro is easier to handle when pitching jigs and easier to watch your line when fishing in calm and shallower conditions.

Why do all of the Pro's use fluoro and everyone on these forums seem to use braid? you only see one of the BASS pro's use braid when they are fishing the really thick stuff.

I only use braid for thick stuff, although I have seen a lot of the Elite and FLW guys using it for topwaters. I think braid can be better once you get a bite, but flouro is better for getting the bites.

Because from what I've seen flouro doesn't get you many more bites, at least around here. I can be throwing braid and my brother flouro, and once we find what the fish like we'll both throw the same presentation. It's 50/50 from there who will catch more fish. Almost always it's whichever of us is making better casts that day.

I use flouro because there have been cases for me when it will outfish braid. Sure, there have been times when braid will catch just as many fish. But I have yet to see a case when if I am using flouro and the person fishing with me is using braid with the same presentation, they will outfish the flouro.

Same reason I use scent. It may not work all the time, but it will never cause you to not get a bite.

I feel with braid I get a much better hook set. Tried flouro a few times and felt like I was setting a hook using a bungee cord, and then they would be off, switch back to braid and set the hook and you know its done. Maybe its the type but for 15 bucks you would think it would be good stuff.

I agree with Cecil, If I can get away with fishing flouro, I will use it everytime over braid, maybe its a confidence thing, but I feel like I get more bites with it. That said, I think using braid in minnesota in clear lakes does not seem to matter as much compared to fishing it on some of the lakes in the south that get pressured by every one and their brother.

This was a huge learning curve for me while fishing college events the past few years outside of MN. I got my behind whooped a few times because all I ever knew coming from grass filled lakes in minnesota was to fish a jig or t-rig on braid. I can truly say that when I started to use flouro with drop-type baits, my finishes were a lot better. Maybe thats why we see national pros using it all the time, or it could boil down to that confidence thing again smile whatever works for you is what you should do!
