Just wondering if I need to bring my auger extension with this weekend? I am planning a trip to the DL/Pelican Rapids area. I heard the jumbo perch on Lake Lizzie were biting last weekend so I am going to give it a try.

Honest replies appreciated. I don't want to drag my extension with if I don't have to.

Thanks!

I couldn't agree more Dietz . Folks should always go prepared . I couldn't imagine travelling and icefishing without an auger which is basically the same thing this poster is asking if the ice was too thick and no extension . Seriously now .

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am not fortunate enough to have a truck but a small compact car and it gets pretty tight in there with all my other equipment. Also, I suffered from Osgood-Schlatters Disease when I was a kid and my knees get weak sometimes carrying all my equipment. I try to leave extra stuff at home if I don't need it.

Jbuzzo, I don't appreciate the pack mule comment. It's comments like yours that give ice fisherman a bad name.

Drag it with? What is it all of a pound or three? Drop it in the car. Heck always have it in the truck/car and you wont have to worry about it. I never understood why people ask this question either. Before I got my Nils I always carried my extension with. It took up as much room as a flashlight.

I think its funny that people ask this question over and over, likely just to get a rise out of people, and it works everytime!

I don't care about auger extensions. What I really want to know is which flasher I should buy; Marcum, Vex, or Bird?

Yeah, Jbuzzo, dont give us a bad name. The guy obviously rides a small horse, not a friggin mule???

Mudpuppy maybe you can pick up an otter sled to haul your extension behind the horse, sinice it's such a burden. Just a thought.

I'm sorry Mudpuppy...no offense. But we've all seen these type of posts on here before. I thought you were joking, but it does sound like space is of a major concern to you. My apologies. Me and my dad used to pack up a Chevette to get out on the ice back in the mid 80's out in Pelan, Lake Bronson, and Florian Park patroling for northern's to bring back to the family. I'd throw it in the glove box if there's room.

i am sure there is always room under any vehicles seats.......or in the 5 gallon bucket that you carry everything else in.....or whatever you carry the auger in I am sure it will fit in that....or put it in your pocket......not enough room or it is too much weight for anyone is a lame excuse....if you can carry the auger I am sure you can carry the extension......sorry but this falls in line with should I spool line on my reel or will the fish just jump out of the hole!! Good Luck and hopefully you slay the fish this weekend........oh and welcome to FM!! LOL

...and some guys just can't stand ridiculous questions.

Good lord, a little hazing is expected for such a question from a new FM'er. I understand that I am relatively new here too before anyone wants to make a "smart azz/funny guy" comment about my post.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
