Fishing alone

As fun as it can be to hit the ice with buddies, kids or even the wife, there's something very peaceful about fishing alone. I spent three hours last night enjoying the weather and fishing the way I wanted. No baiting hooks for the kids, no taking off fish for the wife, etc. You guys like fishing alone?

As much as I like the camaraderie that icefishing can offer, I sure do enjoy the soul nourishment a solo jaunt can provide. There's just something special about being the only one on a lake, with only the ravens to "croak" back and forth with.

I love fishing alone in the winter or summer. Don't have to worry about what someone else likes to do or doesn't like to do, what their schedule is, or hurting their feelings when you do things the way that YOU want to do them. Call me selfish, but that's the way I like to roll sometimes!

Don't get me wrong, I love taking my wife and kids out in the boat-they have a blast, but there is something to be said for fishing alone.

It can be just the ticket some days... the peace the lack of Discussion of where to fish , what to fish for, trolling/anchor, move or stay... But overall I enjoy fishing with others as it is the fun conversations and spending time with friends and family that is what fishing is to me.

I laughed when I read the topic. Years ago I was hanging out with my brother Jim and one of his friends knew Jim liked to fish alot. He then ask me if I'm as crazy about fishing as Jim? I tell him "Yea I am ". Jim then tells him "NO! he is worse he will go fishing alone!"

As I've grown older I do like to have company whether it be my wife, sons, brothers or my dad.

My grandson has been my fishing partner winter and summer for 10 years or so, we used to rent a camp on black lake every summer for a couple weeks and he always was ready to go even at 5am but now my daughter and soninlaw are getting divorced and he has gone to live with his father and I don't care if I go fishing or not. I go some but it is not the same.

I fish alone at least half the time. I need to fish alone that much so I can be ready to work with others when I'm out in a group. Solitude is sweet medicine.

My first grandchild will be born in May. I've surprised myself by actually looking forward to the day he's old enough to go fishing with me. His dad doesn't go in for hunting and fishing, so I'll be his gateway to that world. I kinda like that.

Lester, sorry to hear that. Your grandson will NEVER forget the time he's spent fishing with you. And he won't always be far away with his dad.

Love to fish alone......wait a minute does it count if I bring my dog?

Only if you talk to your dog. wink

Well today I fished alone on a small lake by Shieldsville, drilled 25 holes with my hand auger and did not have 1 fish come up on the sonar. Today I wish I had someone to share the blame with, or Harvey along with me to pass on some ice fishing wisdom (or at least his power auger).

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
