The Good, Bad, and Ugly

I have been a fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide ever since I was a little boy growing up in Alabama. The Tide claim more national titles than any other college football program. 12 national titles in over 100 years! Theres a lot of losing seasons in 100 years time.

You seem pretty proud and boisterous over Alabamas trophy case!!

I can see the hurt and the pain with being a vikes fan, He's openly negative about the Vikings, I think it's a coping mechanism that built up to deal with the let downs..lol

Well, That may be true, and hopefully the trophy case gets a little fuller tonight!

But what I was trying to convey is that even one of the most successful programs in the nation only has 12 titles in more than 100 years.

As of the end of the 2008-2009 season, 15 NFL teams have not won a Super Bowl.

The teams that have been to the Super Bowl (in years shown) and lost each time:

•Buffalo Bills (0-4) consecutively 1991-1994

•Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) 1982, 1989

•Tennessee Titans (0-1) 2000

•San Diego Chargers (0-1) 1995

•Philadelphia Eagles (0-2) 1981, 2005

•Minnesota Vikings (0-4) 1970, 1974, 1975, 1977

•Carolina Panthers (0-1) 2004

•Atlanta Falcons (0-1) 1999

•Seattle Seahawks (0-1) 2006

•Arizona Cardinals (0-1) 2009

Have never played in a Super Bowl :

•The Cleveland Browns

•Jacksonville Jaguars

•Houston Texans

•Detroit Lions

•New Orleans Saints

Almost half the teams in the league have never won a super bowl. New Orleans has never even played in one. Quite a few of this years playoff teams are somewhere on this list. Does that mean according to past performances, all these teams have no chance as well?

FYI - Prior to the 1970 Merger:

  • The San Diego Chargers won one AFL championship - in 1963.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles won three NFL championships - in 1948, 1949 & 1960.
  • The Minnesota Vikings won one NFL championshp - In 1969.
  • The Arizona Cardinals won two NFL championships one in 1925 and the other in 1947 (As the Chicago Cardinals).

The 'Been-Gals' have never wone a championship of any kind; and like you said the 'Aints' have never even been there.

By the way some other non-playoff teams from your list do have championships in their distant past:

  • The Bufflao Bills won two AFL Championships - in 1964 & 1965.
  • The Tennessee Titans won two AFL championships in 1960 & 1961 (As the Houston Oilers).
  • The Detroit Lions won four NFL championships - in 1935, 1952, 1953 & 1957.

Perhaps most impressively,

  • The Cleveland Browns won four AAFC Championships - in 1946, 1947, 1948 & 1949

    and four NFL Championships - in 1950, 1954, 1955 & 1964.

Aside from setting the record straight I'm not sure what my point is, except maybe that the past doesn't mean anything - And that even some of the current doormats of the league still have some hardware in their trophy cases.

It's a VERY good feeling when they've made it in. It's a bad one when they lose. I want to see them win this one. smile

I started watching during the Tommy Kramer era; I can only imagine your level of pain, Elwood. Fortunately the Vikings bandwagon has extra large running boards so it's easy enough to hop on or off.

I don't mean to be the voice of negativity here but I must point out that it's been 11 years: It's time for the Vikes to lose another NFC championship game.

1987 Season: Darrin Nelson drops the pass

1998 Season: Gary Anderson misses the field goal

2009 Season: Adrian Peterson fumbles the ball (?)
